🎸 The Theory
All of the licks we look at are very much based around the Minor Pentatonic PLUS, either Dorian or the Harmonic Minor scales. Alongside Carlos's unique phrasing and technique, these scale choices really make his sound so distinct. Below, we have used the fretboard diagrams to show you the key shapes you need for each of these scales. For the Minor pentatonic, we have all 5 shapes. For Dorian we've stuck with 2 shapes for now, and the same for the harmonic minor. This will definitely get you started! (See Website)

Thanks for the lesson on Santana. Cheers from Indonesia.
I gotta say that 4th lick is pretty "Smooth"
This is really helpful. It’s nice to learn new things. I’ve listened to these licks since, er, 1978. But never figured how to play them
Iick number 2 is literally "THE LICK"... love it
Great lesson. I sussed out the Dorian mode from listening to Santana 40 years ago as a self-taught guitar player. Em to Amaj, for example. (We didn't have KZread videos back then.)

Me too 50 years self taught without memorising modes and scales but learning to slow everything Carlos plays down there's a lot more than these guys can show.the right hand is the key over 70% of the time for me.He plays phenomenal tricks.Without which you'll be outside of what he's creating.
I've just found your channel, love it man looks like there's so much amazing content on here, can't wait to check out the website

Amazing! Thanks very much for that lovely feedback. If you have any other questions about the lessons please let us know :)
He mentioned that he learned this distinctive phrasing of his guitar by trying to imitate Ms. Dionne Warwick's singing. Interesting

I can tell you that growing up and listening to my mother's music - mostly Dionne Warwick, Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, etc. - has made me a better musician in a lot of ways. Even though I wanted to be a metal player, my forte seems to be a slower and more melodic style of playing and listening to a wide variety of great songcraft has made a huge difference. If only my ability to craft melodies didn't overshadow my limited guitar skills, lol.
I am just learning to play the guitar and found your videos and website, thank you for all the information, tips and knowledge. As for the licks of CS, you just gave me a new impulse to my learning. Kudos.

@@yga No worries dude!
Man these are basically the theme and solo on Oye Como Va 😂
Just getting to the stage of understanding modes, this video just made something click! Dorian makes so much sense now! Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard "the lick" in lick 2. Which only shows I know more about memes than I do about guitar...either way, fun stuff! Great content, thanks!

Hi Jordan, sadly I don't know enough about pickups. However, I do have a college who suggests Bare Knuckle will do an amazing set of pickups for this style. You can call Bare Knuckle and they'll be happy to guide you!

What guitar I should you for santana Styles?
@yga
3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Santana's signature PRS guitar would be the best bet but any humbucking guitar would also do the trick!
You should use a PRS guitar to play Santana licks,i think it would sound a lot like his, just sayin.
