Five Minute Finish for Craft Shows Or Gifts Abrasive Paste Wood Turning

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was ask to show how I use abrasive paste and polish
I use it a lot in my turnings but have not broken it down as well as I do in this video. Sanding is very important prior to using any finish.
This is how I do it and I get a great finish using it.
Others may do it another way and get a great finish as well.
I started with Zinsser Seal Coat before using the abrasive paste.
I only used 1 heavy coat but sometimes I will use many coats of lacquer then the abrasive paste. Mostly on segmented turnings.
I used Acks Abrasive Paste and Acks Polish/Restoring Paste

Tom here; Great intel; I've made my own abrasive pastes; one with pumice and one with diatomaceaous (sp?) earth. Beeswax and mineral oil are the carriers. That being said, YOUR bowl came out spectacular!!

I don't think anyone could ask for a better breakdown of the finishing technique shown in this video. The step by step breakdown could not have been made any clearer than what you have provided in this video Gary. I think it was a delightful piece of wood with lovely strong clear grain & the abrasive past & the polish have provided a superb finish. Stay safe & well in 2020 & I look forward to what you have to show us during the year. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

Thank you so much for sharing your insights. I've been using Acks for a while, but, based on your video here, I have not been using the abrasive paste quite properly. I wasn't continuing to polish until the paper towel basically came away clean, or until the grit was absolutely and totally gone. I have never quite been able to get the shine I wanted from my pieces, but I'm hopeful now that with more effective use and working of the abrasive paste, that I'll be able to get the results I'm looking for.

Great vid on using Acks Products. I bought a new 16” lathe in September and have been busy. My typical finish is 2# cut shellac or wiping poly. I will purchase Acks next month but most of these bowls were given away as Christmas gifts and boy what a hit they turned out to be. Thanks for your great teaching style and all the neat tips. Been assembling the board-to-bowl fixture to cut the rings.

I'll give the Ack's paste a try. And it's nice to support a business from my home state. Btw, I often hollow out the inside of a bowl or vase with the lathe running in reverse (using a chuck that locks on the spindle!). This way I don't need to lean over the lathe, and it's easier to see in deeper vessels. Sometimes the tool rest seems to be at an awkward angle, so I might have a custom rest made for me.

  • @ThePapa1947

    @ThePapa1947

    2 жыл бұрын

Yes it does work good. I hollow that way as well if there is something I can not reach without reaching so far over the lathe. And for sure you want the locking screw in. I agree the tool rest can get in the way doing that. I have a few tool rest to choose from so that helps. Thanks for wataching, Gary

Thanks for the great video. This answers a lot of questions I have had about the process you use and why. How the various components of the abrasive paste actually work and the content of the restoring polish is still a mystery but finishing in general is a mystery in woodturning. I am in the process of mixing my own shellac from flakes, Zisner is not sold here anymore. I believe a 1 pound cut should work as a sanding sealer with a final coat of either lacquer or poly as a final finish. Happy New Year to you and your family!

Great video Gary and thank you for sharing. I have been using the Acks products for a little while now, about half way through my first container of both the abrasive paste and polishing paste, and have never really known how much of the abrasive paste I should use so I have always used it kind of sparingly whereas the polishing paste I got a better sense of how much of that was needed right from the start some how. That’s certainly a beautiful bowl and I did see the person wearing a mask as well lol.

Thank you Scott. I may have had just a little more paste than I needed but I like everything covered with paste before I start the lathe. For sure I think you can have too little but not too much. That said I am thrifty with how I use it. Getting ready to go out and use it on a lacquer finish right now. Not many mentioned the face but I sure see it. Oh wait that finish as pretty shiny...it must have been my own reflection LOL Thanks for watching. Gary
