FIVE FLIES FOR NOVEMBER 2022 with EELAND STRIBLING (@blacksteveirwin)

Спорт

November is a month of transition. Fall is on its way out and winter will be readily stepping in for a spell. That means we get a nice mix of the two when it comes to fly fishing. November means everyone's favorite blue-winged olives and streamers will be waning and eventually making way for the winter midge and attractor game. Banker hours are in full effect as the days get shorter. That means productive fishing will tend to be packed into the hours between late morning and afternoon, as the water warms up and fish become their most active.
More than any other season, winter is the perfect time to slow down and be deliberate. Concentrate on presentation and rigging, as fish will be less forgiving when it comes to a wayward drift. If you find a fish, chances are there will be plenty of fish to be caught in the same water type over the course of the day. Get out and enjoy this late fall and early winter fishing!
In this month's episode, host Ivan Orsic and co-host Tanner Smith welcomed Ya Aunty’s Favorite Comedian Wildlife Educator & Biologist - Eeland Stribling into the studio to talk about flies, presentations, rigging, and the like for the month of November and beyond. In addition to talking about fishing for November, we touched on Eeland's work in the community and the first season of his new KZread show "Comedians on the Fly."
As always, we answer a couple of commenter questions about rigging, bug choice, and fishing techniques. If you have a question about October fishing - leave a comment down below on the KZread video. NEXT MONTH, our special guest will be the one and only Landon Mayer, so bring your best questions for the man, the myth, the legend. If we pick yours, you'll WIN a Trouts Prize Pack - including prizes from Rising Fish and Umpqua!
For the month of November, the Five Flies are available at our Denver location and online.

Love following your content and Eeland was hilarious. As an educator, I appreciate what you are doing with kids to get them opportunities to expand their perspective and appreciate the outdoors. For Landon: I’ve actually been hoping you’d be on 5 Flies soon, I really love everything you do! Particularly your efforts and initiative on conservation and ethics. Question: Whether novice or advanced in the sport, fisherman can always be improving their conservation and ethics. Specifically with stream practices, what advice can you give to viewers for protecting their waters through practice? What tips do you have for managing micro trash like tippet snips or weights? How can anglers help offset break offs or other trash that they contribute to water systems?

Tarpon are definitely the top of my dream list! Q for December - How do you change up your streamer approach as winter sets in? What type of water are you targeting, does color/size selection change at all?

Hey great work getting Eeland on the show, he’s the man! Question for Landon in December. How does a trout-focused fly fisherman leverage those skills to become a more versatile angler for other species? Especially thinking about saltwater and other “big game” applications

question for Landon: I haven't encountered a lot of rising fish on our tailwater fisheries and specifically the South Platte in Cheesman Canyon. when do you tie on a dry fly? Is it When you see a rising fish, spot the first bugs in a hatch, or do you just tie on a dry fly when you know a hatch period is coming. Thanks! I can't wait to see your presentation(s) at the fly fishing show this February.

For December Session: First, love these episodes, fun and informative. As fish move into the deeper waters and become more picky, what are some strategies on how to entice and get more eats? Thanks.

Must say I look forward each month to the 5 flies of the month. Every month you guys do an amazing job of making the episodes informative and entertaining. Truly love that aspect of the show and not to mention the amazing guests of our beloved industry. Never a dull episode that’s for sure. My question for Landon is about one of his most well known patterns, Mayer’s mini leech. First I was wondering where the inspiration of the pattern came from and also with its many variations what his go to variant was. Also when he is stream side/ and or on the lake. What considerations do you take in when choosing the size of the mini leech and bead head color that you start with on a given outing. Also do you fish this particular pattern on a tight line system always? Or do you like to fish this in a 2 streamer setup or maybe a smaller imitative nymph on the dropper? Dead drift? I can say I have had tremendous success with this pattern fishing it multiple ways but am very interested in the methods you use with the pattern and was hoping to learn a little more of the origins and techniques of its creator. Look forward to hearing from you and just want to give a huge thanks to you for all you do for the sport that we all love and cherish and a huge shout out to everyone at trouts fly fishing! Tight lines! Jason

I really enjoy these videos, thanks for the great work! For years I've always tried to match the hatch as a general strategy. However, since I've started euro nymphing a year ago it seems that hatch matching is the least important aspect. Few if any of the instructional videos address fly selection other than weight. Can you talk about what goes into your thought process on fly selection?

Question for Landon: Runoff is one of my favorite times of year to run a smaller leech (typically a pine squirrel or semi seal pattern) to get pretty strong strikes by simply dead drifting under an indicator. I’ve found this works for me since the leech materials allow for the rougher water to make the leech dance and move awesome in the water during the drift. During the winter months I’ve struggled to get nearly as many takes on the same patterns using this method, most likely since due to the lower and slower flows. How do you go about running smaller leech patterns in winter conditions without spooking fish with an unrealistic presentation?

Question for Landon: Do you still find yourself tying on a streamer in December and January? If so are you looking for specific conditions? Do you find streamers being more effective in the winter on the bigger waters (ie middle/lower Colorado, lower Ark, and lower Gunnison) or do you find equal or greater success on smaller rivers (ie dream stream or the eagle)? Thanks so much for the great advice in this video. Keep up the good work Evan!!!

Question for December - I am very new to fly fishing and have only been on the water less than 100 times, during winter what type of rivers should you avoid such as south platte below deckers or should you go to bigger rivers. I am not sure if it matters during the winter or not just want to know. Love the videos and your store a ton of flies to pick from!!! ❤

Awesome video again y’all!!! Question for Landon: (this video has since been deleted, and leads to why I’m curious) The video of using the net to create air bubbles above a fish before releasing it back to its holding spot. Would you use this more often when you’re winter fishing since fish tend to be more lethargic? I love the idea, but would love more info as to when and how you use this technique.

Fellas, I grew up fly fishing for bass in west TN and now live here in CO and have been fishing tail waters mainly with streamers as its what I’m most comfortable with. Should I move to a sinking line on my 6wt or keep throwing the floating line and what are the advantages of sinking line. Also love the light color streamers. Way better than olive.

Landon: is it always leech season?? haha how often is the mini leech making it onto your rig in the winter? what size of tippet are you using in the winter for leeches and such? i seem to start with 4x or 3x fluorocarbon since i have had some breakoffs during sets... is it a dead drift? a bouncing jig motion?

Doesn't using those plastic eggs "snag" fish more times than not? The hook doesn't usually end up in the fish's mouth from what I've heard since you rig them above the hook, correct? I bought some years ago but never used them, but I do use traditional eggs. Doesn't sound like too much fun since I do my fair share of foul hooking fish which is alway a little disappointing, especially when it's a lunker.
