In this video we specifically looked for spells that target you or your allies, and offer an improvement to your combat capabilities. We also don’t discuss Polymorph as we think this spell goes far beyond JUST an offensive buff, we will be discussing it in the future. More videos on other types of Buff spells (defensive and utility) are coming!

  • @DungeonDudes

    @DungeonDudes

    4 жыл бұрын

@@logancombs4842 Not niche at all -- but there's a TON of ways to generate advantage on attacks, so if getting advantage on attacks alone is the objective, Greater Invisibility isn't always the best choice. Faerie Fire, a 1st-level spell, can get advantage going for the entire party, for instance. Greater Invisibility of course has other benefits (there's huge defensive advantages, you don't have to worry about your target resisting the saving throw or snapping out of the effect)

Dungeon Dudes... Would you be willing to tackle a video about using "flavor" in games both as a player and as a DM? As an example, one of my favorite characters was an "Arcane Archer" who was actually just a Warlock with as many eldritch blast invocations as possible that used a bow shaped "staff" to cast spells. Ways to drastically change things without any mechanical changes.

Particularly on a ranged rogue. A melee rogue, however, might encounter some issues with this strategy, particularly in that it encourages them not to disengage, which leaves them exposed. Its also not a good choice in a battle where you might be regularly taking big hits, as it prevents you from using Uncanny Dodge (as well as other reactions).

I'm so glad you guys brought up Crusaders Mantle, because I have personal experience in seeing its power used in-game to a terrifying degree. We were a fairly high leveled party (I wanna say 9th-10th level?) and I was a Wizard with a magic item allowing me to pull & prepare any spell of 3rd level or lower from any class's spell list, once per short/long rest. I end up picking up Crusaders Mantle as we were heading in to fight a Death Knight, when our Bard casts "Animate Objects" Hell hath been released upon this poor death knight today. Immediately animating 10 pieces of silver, each one doing 1d4 +4 piercing damage, the bard's objects then gain the additional d4 (as they are considered creatures with AC, HP, and movement), doubling the damage this spell could do in a round from 10d4 + 40 to 20d4 + 40- critical hits non-withstanding. And believe me- there were Crits. It was an amazing combo that after looking back on it, I wish I had used it in earlier fights, but at the same time felt bad for our DM who watched us stumble into decimating his Death Knight in 2 rounds flat.

That's a pretty good combo for wrecking large targets. I haven't considered using Crusader's Mantle much myself because as I look at it, 9th level is a long time to wait for such a small amount of extra damage that you'd really need more than a full-sized party to maximize its effects and make it worth casting, but using your idea or a spell like Conjure Animals or Conjure Minor Elementals would give you enough extra minions to make this worthwhile. On another note, your idea about animating silver coins gives me a really good idea for if I ever have to fight Lycanthropes.

I give it pts for style, though lol. But, eh. Lore Bard, best Bard. It's among the best casters & _the_ best skillmonkey in the game. The only problem is, I'd rather not have to rely on casting Haste that much. After all, a Sword Bard doesn't even get access to those spells until *_level 10_* whereas a Lore Bard gets to grab them at 6 (freeing up the lvl 10 picks for things like Destructive Wave, Telekinesis, Find Greater Steed, etc). I'd rather embrace the Bard's natural support/control role... and most of those spells require concentration. Besides, going all-in on casting is just so _satisfying_ for me in general lol.

Slow relies on monsters failing the initial save and subsequent saves at the end of each turn which is a problem that Haste does not have. I think where Haste shines the most is when a Sorcerer casts it with the metamagic Twinned Spell; Especially when you are facing a single target monster with high wisdom. Slow is a fantastic spell nonetheless; It is ideal in combat when there are many creatures with low wisdom scores clumped up which gives you a better probability of failed saves.

Then you get another sneak attack at the start of the next characters turn if you hit as well. Alternatively haste doubles the odds that the rogue successfully lands their sneak attack. Not saying its better on a Rogue than a Paladin or great weapon or sharpshooter martial wielder....but its another great option still if played right.

You are so right about Bless. Another major draw of it is the bonus to Death Saves, too. Motivational Speech from Acquisitions Incorporated is a pretty great buff when you know you're preparing for a fight. Granting each ally advantage after they've been hit with any attack for the duration PLUS temporary HP is really, very good, and makes your tanker a brutal machine while helping everyone at least a little. Upcasting at 4th level for 10 temp HP on all targets is good, but I can't see spending higher spell slots for it. Elemental Weapon is a beautiful buff spell that I think is terribly underrated. The ability to touch a weapon, make it magical, give it an attack and damage bonus, and add 1d4 of an element you choose is really very good. Bless coupled with this makes a Rogue a nightmarish striker. Upcasting to 5th level for a +2 bonus set and 2d4 bonus damage is great, and in rare scenarios, upcasting to 7th level could still be viable. I find Holy Weapon from Xanathar's Guide to be pretty strong, also, and well worth taking as a Cleric. It's great for targeting your Melee combatant of choice and bestowing the 2d8 extra radiant damage, but the extra option for the blinding burst when they find themselves surrounded is good AoE damage and control Clerics can't always get.

It actually synergizes well with arcane trickster rogues that dual wield. Cast booming blade with your normal action, use your hasted action to attack and then use the bonus to make your offhand strike. With respect to getting an extra sneak attack, I use sentinel or mage slayer to allow me extra opportunities to use a reaction to get my 2nd one in. My DM hates me. Especially leveraging sentinel to do the extra sneak attacks. It happens a lot standing next to the barbarian or flanking (which he also hates)!

There used to be a monster ability called "all-around vision". Look it up if you like, monsters like xorns (with eyes on all three sides) and hydras (multiple heads that can swivel all the way around) had it, and it meant basically that it was difficult AF to try to sneak up behind them, because they don't really have a "behind". All of that information, which was published with 3.5e, was then stripped back out of 5e. Check the Monster Manual now, and it's not in the statbox. Why? Because facing isn't in the game, and neither is flanking. If they were intended to be in there, they would be. They have been in the past.

Mal-2 KSC Not sure what you’re talking about. Pg 251 of DMG has the optional rule of flanking. If the rules truly intended for it to be ignored 100% they would not have included it in the book. DM can ignore it, but it applies for his monsters as well, so it’s a two way street. It adds a nice bit of tactics to a fight you otherwise don’t have.

@@starkiller99 It used to be there, and there was even a relevant line in statboxes for it. They deliberately took it out. It's not like they had to add it or anything, they chose to remove it. That tells me they don't want to support flanking anymore. They can't stop you from using it, so they might as well recommend a way to do it that they know won't totally break the game, but they'd rather you not. I'm fine with that decision, having played it both ways. I'm also fine with the rules on gaining Advantage being a bit tighter, and the rules on Sneak Attack correspondingly being a bit looser (although that section reads like legalese). I've tweaked mechanics a fair bit and it never takes long for certain players to find the loopholes. I could patch for the loopholes, but writing paragraphs of if-then statements seems way too 3.5e-ish to me and not at all like 5e's "you got Advantage, you got Disadvantage". I try to stick to the perceived "keep it simple, stupid" mechanical system and leave the complexity to the spells and items.

I know this video is old, but a here's a short story to tell: During the Storm King's Thunder campaign I was playing a few years back, we decided as a party to make our way to the Hill Giant encampment in search of one of the magic conch shells needed to progress in the story. Our party consisted of myself (a Dragonborn Sorcerer), a Minotaur Barbarian, a Goliath Monk, a Halfling Druid, and a Half-Elf Sorcerer. Using some clever planning, we snuck into the back of the base and up into the chiefs room with relative ease, till we found ourselves face to face with multiple Hill Giants, a volley of arrows from Kobolds on a battlement, and chief Guh herself. Our Minotaur Barbarian (his name was Zerg) had acquired a Flame Tongue Greatsword earlier in the campaign, awarded to him by our DM as a rule of cool reward after he dove face first off a cliff just to kill a Fire Giant he had also knocked off of said cliff. Two rounds in, after the other sorcerer and I had cleared out the shooters up above, and we were having issues, since Guh simply kept calling for more reinforcements, even if they couldnt get in thanks to our Druid blocking the doors. Tired of the crap, and only having a few sorcery points left for the day, I flipped through my repertoire and came across the Haste spell. Let's just say my DM went from confident to "Oh shit..." as I told him my next move was to Twinned Spell Metamagic the Haste spell, targeting our Barbarian and our Monk, before using my fellow Sorcerer's help to fly up out of reach. Zerg had had enough of this shit as well, used a charge attack to go right for Guh with his Flame Tongue ignited and his Rage active. I don't remember how much damage he dealt specifically, but he more than one crit, had a +5 to his Strength, had Great Weapon Master, and was Hastened. He killed Guh in one round, running so fast and hard through her that he essentially gave her the female version of a vasectomy AND cauterized the wound with his Flame Tongue. I think 186 was the final number. Anyway, the DM banned me and the other sorcerer from Twinning Haste again, since what was meant to be a challenging fight very quickly became one sided xD

Point of disagreement with haste on a rogue! Sneak attack is limited to once per turn, but not once per round. Therefore, rogues get some of the most benefit from the spell: They can use their hasted action to attack (hopefully activating sneak attack), and the you can HOLD their main action for something like "As soon as the guy in front of me tries to do something", allowing them to get off a second sneak attack in the round! Keep in mind that using the held action will take the rogues reaction, so no AoOs for the round, but still an absolutely worthwhile tactic. Also, honorable mention buffs: Polymorph and Holy Weapon, both FANTASTIC ways to boost up a party member. Great video guys! Loving all the content!

Polymorph a 4th level Transmutation, Bard, Druid, Sorcerer, and Wizard spell. It may not seem like a buff spell, but it does transforms a target into a creature that gives the target temp HP (which is very important) along with giving you the stats of the creature and the creatures abilities until the spell ends (wide range of buffs, debuffs, and many other effects). It also can be casted on your enemy into a weak helpless creature. Aid a 2nd level Abjuration, Cleric, and Paladin. Your spell bolsters your allies with toughness and resolve. Choose up to three creatures within range. Each target’s hit point maximum and current hit points increase by 5 for the duration. At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, a target’s hit points increase by an additional 5 for each slot level above 2nd.

Haste is usually not a great option for wizards to cast on themselves, but for the war magic subclass it's pretty awesome. With their 10th level class ability, concentrating on any spell gives them a +2 to AC and all saving throws, so casting haste on yourself instantly bumps up your AC by 4, all saving throws by 2, double movement, advantage on dex saves, and the extra action. It's a solid boost to survivability if surviving is the goal. Also, if that wizard does get access to guidance or even resistance and can just keep casting it while dungeon delving, they could always have that +2 bump to ac and saves which is just super fun

One of my domain spells is faerie fire which makes enemies who fail a dex save glow a certain color allowing your team to attack with advantage. Pretty cool on paper, was stoked about it until I realized how good bless is. Bless in a way does the same thing without having to do any saving throw and provides an extra d4 to saving throws. It’s not advantage but it still helps with attack rolls. So I find my self never really wanting to use faerie fire instead of bless being that they are both lv 1. I am keeping in mind that enemies effected by faerie fire glow even when they try to become invisible but I haven’t encounter anything that can do that they.

I will say this also, having haste is just really fun. If you're a caster any even slightly melee character will love you because you gave them a ton of extra flexibility mobility and help them tank.

Fun haste RP. The party Barbarian has found himself addicted to Haste. The wizard told him "the first one's free..."

I thought a bard that charged for buffs and heals would be hilarious and on brand.

Would be nice if enlarged improved weapon damage based on your weapon die instead of adding a flat d4, like it did in 3.5.

@Lance Clemings especially since players only get one per turn now. Would be nice to get extra reactions per turn due to high intelligence or dexterity. You don't even get extra skill proficiencies any more.
