The reason your rotor arm is pointing the number 2 cylinder is because you have set it 6 degrees before TDC. If you set it at TDC, it will be correct. Then, highlight the crank pully pointer with white paint and the 6 degrees before the TDC mark. Then, use a strobe on start up to move the body of the distributor until the paint marks line up 👍

as i turn the engine clockwise to TDC the rotor arm moves anti clockwise and even further away from cylinder one. anyhoo i've got my new starter motor so gonna get that on soon and have another go at starting it. 👍
