Fitting a Kaaz LSD to my mates MX5 PART:2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The second half of the MX-5 diff install on Paul's MX-5. Sorry it's so long.
Great guide and info here:

TOP TIP: Fully remove the drive shafts instead of wrestling them past the diff. Trust me it will make your life so much easier.

Would this diff work in my 96 1.8 open diff? I found it on enjuku I think.

Hey buddy, I’m sorry but I don’t know if it would… I’m no expert on mx-5’s. My mate just bought it to me to install… have a look on Bofi racings website, they’ll be able to advise on what diff will fit. Good luck 🤙🏼

How come the large backlash of 0.17mm? Does it whine at all?

I haven’t been told it whines from the owner…I was shooting for a bigger backlash since it’s a track car mainly and the additional backlash will help reduce the amount of be play when it’s up to temp. I’d rather it was on the looser side than too tight and binds up. Honestly though first one I’ve ever done so…we’ll see how she holds up. So far it’s done a full track day and no issues reported. What do you think the backlash should be?

Bofi's numbers are 0.091-0.110mm I rebuilt my 4.1 Torsen at the weekend as it has whined since I owned the car 2 years ago. It's done about 6 track days in that time and never got any worse while running 250lbft/320bhp. Starting backlash seemed to be ~0.20mm on mine. I rebuilt it to ~0.10mm.... still whines the same way, most noticeable at part throttle slowly accelerating. I think the edges of the ring gear teeth might be too worn, so under torque input I think it's then spreading, walking up the tooth a bit higher onto the more worn part, increasing backlash even further. The teeth look very even and nothing is obviously wrong. But I've not seen a 'good' one to compare. We'll crack open a spare 4.1 open next Monday and try to find and fix the issue (likely swap the Torsen to the donor ring and pinion front casing if the teeth look in better shape)

@@msitpro1 good luck with bud… I’m definitely no expert on this… I’m not going to lie. Genuinely it’s the first one I’ve ever opened and thought I’d have a crack at it. I was a bit scared -shall we say - of over tightening the bearing preload rings (if that’s what they’re called) Either way I’ll get my mate to keep an eye on it so I appreciate the information, thanks.
