FIND THE RIGHT PUTTER LENGTH
For some time now I have been interested to get on the SAM PUTTING LAB to see how the different length of putter can help or hurt my putting.
In this video I will be testing a 33, 34 & 35 inch putter's on the SAM PUTTING LAB with Head Coach at Torquay James Urquhart.
Join us as we investigate further.
Thanks for watching and please comment below.

Let's have more of James, Dan. Absolute natural in front of the camera and very clear and confident in his message.
You clearly will not settle for anything but the highest quality guest talent on your channel.
Great video Dan, I was tested on the SAM putting lab in Finland last year and it revealed several things that you did not mention, particularly about the type of putter that best suited my putting stroke and also the loft on the putter, I had the loft reduced by 1 Deg and saw an immediate better strike position on the putter face, the roll of the ball of the face was also much better. Keep up the great work😀😀😀
Very interesting analysis. I use a long putter due to old back injuries so I can stand up straighter. Been putting that way for about 20 years and am used to it now. Would be interesting to see Lester get fitted too. 👍
I bought a 35 inch putter very recently. I went for the Odyssey Stroke Lab V Line and tried both 34 and 35. As a 6 foot 3 guy the 35 just seemed to sit well in my hands for stroke. I wasn’t able to use SAM and did just go on feel. Although I definitely don’t hit it out the middle consistently I have noticed a positive difference with my putting. Great video Dan 👍
Dan excellent video as always. Putting is a game within a game and you must devote, with the right equipment in your hands, to this very important part of the game. Great bit of equipment you have to measure where strike was on the putter face.
I’m going for a putter fitting soon. Found this really interesting. Thanks Dan
Dan the Man wonderful video now I understand more why I feel more consistent and comfortable with my 34 inch putter, brilliant keep up the good work I guess I am chopping my 35 inch down to 34 inch length
Long ago I played golf with a guy whose arms were very long, he used a 33 inch putter very well. I thought it was crazy to use that short of putter until I seen him scratch his knee while standing up straight, that is a slight embellishment but not by much. Putting is just another crazy part of this crazy game we all love. Good video guys, thanks.
Still never had a putter fitting. Always just hit a few and gone on feel. Considering it’s the club you use the most, it’s crazy!! Food for thought 👌
I bought a second hand face balanced Yes putter yesterday, it was £43 and cheapest in the "emporium" went out for an hour of putting on various greens in the rain last night. Initial impressions great but I've lengthened it by adding a spacer to the shaft and regripped overnight. Looking forward to Saturday's comp. I've got a good feeling 🏌️
Once you determine the length, it would be interesting to see how a blade would do versus a mallet. Also when James talks about the back issue, which I notice with me at times, how he would adjust length to help alleviate that. I've been considering a putter fitting in this off season so these putter fitting videos have been very informative. I had gone to a longer putter thinking it would help me judging longer putts. I am notorious with 3 putting. But then I notice more off center strikes.
A 33.5" putter might be the perfect sweet spot for Dan. My opinion is that every company should be offering putter lengths in at least 0.5" increments rather than only 1".With the adjustable weights available in numerous putters on the market, this wouldn't even require keeping dozens of different weights of putter heads in stock to build them either.
Great work guys. I now play a 34 1/2, just feels so good. The other key note that so many people forget is the lie angle. See the way yours changed as you changed putters. Love you ideas for content Dan, keep up the great work and stay safe

What lie angle do you use?
Never had a fitting for a putter. Very similar to your comment about going by feel of the putter. Concentration on tempo and pressure on the grip is key for good strike.
I think eye position I important too, regarding how you see the putt start line at address. If my eyes get over the ball I can’t see the line, a ball inside and I putt well. I’d love to see more of this type of vid. Really interesting stuff. 👍
Getting a putter fitting on Monday and can’t wait!
great video, Really like the guys explanation of the SAM.
Wow in-depth information. Not for novice golfers or high handicappers
I agree with some of the comments below. Would have been good to see a full fit to find the perfect length to show the whole process. I was fitted for 33" 8 years ago. Being fitted improved my putting dramatically as you end up in a much better/consistent hitting position. Also, any chance of Lester doing some carry bag reviews? Thinking of the Titleist Hybrid 5, something light to carry and cart. And maybe the Garmin S62..😊
this was fascinating, more of James please
Amazing video, was not aware of the SAM Put Lab. I was going to buy a new putter today and had decided on the Callaway Ten but now I am going to call around and get fitted. Thank you!

Great vid, thank you. It really made me realise that I need a putter fitting. It's the only club in the bag that hasn't been fit properly. Now you know 34 inch is the best for you, how about a vid to show the results of a blade, versus a mallet etc?
Good VDO, Dan. I always believe that the consistency is the key but now the accuracy. As you get closer to the ground, 32 or 31 inches, the better accuracy can be expected, I think. If I were you, will keep the 34" and choke down a little bit for every crucial putts.
Great stuff guys, really interesting stuff! I think my next putter I’ll get fit for.
Not had a putter fitting, but would like to. You seem to have all the right stuff for all types of fiitings, maybe a holiday in Torquay and book in for some lessons and fittings for me on a future agenda
I feel putter fitting is not widely advertised and therefore not widely used, Enjoyable to watch and to learn from.
great comment Dan, would love see lester fitted with his new putter, interesting
The session where they work out what head style works best and top lines or dot configuration is something you should do
I had I putter fitting. I'm 6'3" tall with lower back problems from an early age, now 52. PGA tour superstore fitted me for a 31" putter. After only a few putts I could really feel my back hurting, so I stayed with a 35" and average 30 putts per round. Listen to your body, if your uncomfortable or in pain do not go with that length putter.

How the heck did they fit you for a 31 inch putter? Someone failed doing their job. That would be like you using a jr set of clubs. I’m 6ft 4 and 35 is the shortest I would consider
Dan can you do a video on an arm lock putter? Im considering trying 1 but would love to see your thoughts on pros and cons
Had a putting fitting with my club pro, A MUST FOR ALL GOLFERS!!
Great stuff as always, thanks Dan
Very interesting, changing between style of putter as well as length would have been equally as interesting. My close friends son is an England junior and changing his spider x from 30 degree toe hang to face balanced made a huge difference on SAM, at his level of golf it's critical not so sure for myself being a 12 handicapper.
Another great video I’m the same never been fitted for a putter just gone on feel maybe it’s something I should consider as it’s the most used club in the bag and as I’ve been fitted for my irons then this should been done as well I’ve also suffered with back pain from putting as well
Funny thing is, I have always felt I am somewhere between 33 and 34 myself - and when I bought my most recent putter, there were two 34s to choose from, but one was very slightly shorter and that is the one I went with because performance wise, it was just so much easier to sink putts with.
Really interesting video Dan. I use 34” but would love a fitting to confirm if it’s right for me
I had a fit on the Quintic system, I'd previously always played a 33" putter. However, got fitted for a 32 & an Evnroll putter which has markedly improved my putting. Wish I'd done it years ago. Would never buy off the shelf again.
Hi Dan, after my putting win on Sunday evening I am going to get a new putter but fitted for me, especially after putting poorly for years. Big oggie has just uploaded 2 x 1hr fitting vlogs with Andy Gorman in Sutton Coldfield and the detail and information is great. Also found your vlog of a year ago which is also superb. That putting competition hould cost me about £400 😭😭 but hopefully will be putting better afterwards. I think the win was meant to be. Have you heard of Precision golf in West Byfleet, Surrey? Thinking of seeing them or Andy Gorman unless there's someone else you could recommend for me.
Hi Dan just had a Capto putter fitting with my golf coach dropped 4+ putts per round , just picked my new Scotty Cameron Newport squareback 2 putter up yesterday 1st round tomorrow, only chose the squareback because of the fitting would highly recommend a fitting 🏌🏻♂️
Very interesting to see. Thank you Dan!
Was very interesting but not a surprise that your existing 34 was the best for you - good to see how the process works though
Played a 34 inch for years and have switched to a 33 inch...i am only 5'7 so it seems to work better for me and feel more comfortable.....cheers all from Canada

I am an amateur weekend golfer, I have got 3 putters which are OG (34), XG(35) and Scotty 2.5 Newport special select(33) all blade putter. My height is 5’4” . At the start I found my XG a bit too long my elbow bend too much I couldn’t get over the ball properly so I cut my XG down to 33.5” after that I found much better but still my elbow bend a bit. Then I cut my OG down to 33” and change the grip to super stroke pistol number 2. My putting was much improve.. but..the middle insert seem to not good for me as my consistency not like golfers who play 3-4 days/week then I bought the scotty cameron newport 2.5 special select 33” milled no insert original standard pistol grip I found my putting much more better especially long putting … my arm hanging nicely my elbow feel relax more my eyes get over the ball.. shoulder and arms more tri-angle became one piece. So I would say if anyone’s posture is standard for putting.. the length of the putter it depends on how height and the length of you arm hanging down and how you stand on top of the ball while you putting. You can tell me if i am wrong for this comment.. cheers
I watched a Scotty Cameron video that talked about this too. I’m surprised the your toe angle went up with the shorter putter. That lie angle is a key piece though. If you are toe up, the loft will change your aim left, toe Down, to the right. It’s only a little, but could be a big difference on long putts, or just be taking away a small percentage of putts that you actually hit well. I tried a couple of 35in putters yesterday and noticed a toe up/ left tendency right away, as long as my eyes were lined up over the ball. Sounds like you need a 33.5in putter. Thanks for the video.

Found that really interesting. I was fitted using Sam Putt Lab early last year. The device was only fitted to my own putter. Which surprised me. And not to the putter I eventually bought. I didn't understand the process, and I guess this may not have been the correct way to fit a putter!
Hi,great video. I had all intention of having a new putter.was put on a Sam and told I was tour average and was just advised more on swing and stance.which is reassuring to know. Could you have had the lie adjusted ,and could you next time show more to do with swing paths and angles please . Would
Played everything from 33-35” putters, toe hang and face balanced. More recently moved from 35” spider after a Sam putt lab fitting and landed with 34” Phantom X 8.5, slight toe hang. Seems to be working.....
I was told 10 years ago that the standard off the shelf putter length of 34” is too long for most people. I was fitted into 33” and have used it ever since and I’m 6’ 2”. The number of people I see putting with their bottom hand on the shaft and a lot of grip above their hands only goes to prove this theory is correct. I’ve tried 34” putters since and they just feel far too long. At the end of the day Dan it comes down to feel and comfort like you say. I do get a sight niggle in my lower back occasionally when practising putting for an extended period but as you only putt intermittently in a round I don’t find it a problem. 👍

David Salmon standard putter lengths has been 35” for a long time.
really interesting video...shoes are brilliant too!
Had my first putter fitting earlier this year. Had similar lower back issues with a 34", and 35" just did not feel right. In the end, was fitted with a putter length of 34.5", and went from a blade to a mini mallet. End results, took a little while to get use to the mallet, but during a recent practice session, made 17 five footers in a row. Including the session yesterday, being fitted has improved in reducing number of stokes per round as well as eliminating those dreaded 3 putts. For my money, I think being fitted for a putter is a better ROI (return on investment) than a driver. With all of that being said, perhaps you should look at a length somewhere between the 33 & 34. As always, great content ! :)

Recently got fitted for a new putter, very surprised when seeing the results between my old and new putters.
I'd have given you a 33.5" or a 33.75" putter. There's bound to be that sweet spot. 👍⛳

Comfort is EVERYTHING. You have to love your putter - not dread it! The fitting advice is for beginners, but if you’ve been playing for years - then get a putter that fits your eye and excites you to use. I’d advise trying out the adjustable pings for yourself and on your own - not while being watched and pressured by a pro. YOU can then decide what length is best for YOU. Human nature makes us change our ‘normal’ to impress or please the teacher. Putting isn’t like the rest of golf - it’s a completely different game.
Great vlog, are you going to do a vlog on the oldish Scotty Cameron putter that you bought a few months ago from eBay that arrived damaged?
Hi Dan I bought a Ping Sigma 2 last year but it’s only since the lockdown that I played around with the length and ended up going down to 32.5. I got a back issue when I first started to practice but I seem to have got use to it now.
Was fit into a 34.25/3/70 by Scotty years ago and have never had a different length since then. Recently upgrade my T22 Newport with the Stability Shaft Tour and have been putting lights out. Not sure if its honeymoon or what...
Would it be possible to get the shaft cut to 33.5 moving to more of a central strike plus help your back more
Been through the SAM process a couple of times with different styles of putters and it's a good experience and interesting. But IMO touch and feel on the greens is the most important part of putting and that's something I certainly do not have. 🤣
Dan, in my limited experience I find that grip size can make a big difference in face control. Can you do something on that?
Good stuff, Dan. Considering how much putting affects score, you'd think all serious golfers would have been properly fitted for their putter. And you'd be wrong, lol. I keep saying I'll do it...
Dan, it would be interesting to do this with Lester, would be good to see the results.
Going for a putter fitting on Monday 👍
Dan, I think most would agree that if you used the same tool for 10+ years you would become very proficient and comfortable with it. I would bet if you had used a 33” or 31” for the same period, this test would have proved it was the best for you in such a short test period..
I’ve never been fitted for a putter I’ve always gone with feel and I have to say I’ve certainly thought more about it but again I think it’s about finding the right fitter to do this

Its worth considering David.
Really interesting video sir, I am a bit of a geek when it comes to stats and always wanted a putter fitting
Good stuff Dan! Looks very similar to my putter fitting experience. I ended up at 34” to bring my strike down and added loft to counter my forward press. Noticeable improvement in consistency of roll!
Hi Dan, Very informative video, please could you advise where I can get in touch with James for session with the SAM putting system, Many thanks Gary ( West Dorset)
Putters rarely have the cg in the middle. The shaft weight moves it towards the heel so Dan might strike it in the sweespot which is more towards the heel.
It would be nice if shops had more than 35" putters seems that's pretty much it in smaller towns tough to try different items when all you can choose is 35"
I use a 38in counterbalanced SC Futura X5 relatively successfully. They were the big thing a few years back - what changed?
Is the ideal strike location in the exact center of the putter face vertically and horizontally? Would it vary by the design of the putter?
Dan was their any adjustment to loft and lie of the putter in the fitting session?
I putted with a 33in for years but switched to a 34in specifically because the back discomfort.
Dan i wonder what a 33.5 would have done for you? I'd like to see you do the 33.5 and 34.5 to compare to the 33 and 34 here.
Id be trialling a 33.5 and just compare as that might produce the best numbers and strike consistency
What about putter loft? Listened to a Tiger putting clip the other day and he was saying he tries to feel he is hitting up on the ball. Ball position slightly forward of centre. This is an area of the game we need more insight into for sure (to be sure) 😁
Interesting. Many Years ago I went 1 inch longer (I'm 191cm tall) and realised I actually didn't putt as well as I did with the shorter putter. So back to standard I went. Also interesting that when I tried a shortened putter belonging to a mate, I pretty much immediately felt it in my lower back after just 10 balls. So thanks Dan.

How tall your putter now? 34, 35?
I was kinda expecting increments of 1/4" in putter length (bearing in mind depth of face of a putter) 😵 it always seems to be 1/2 " - not surprised to see variation in strike with 1" difference. Also noticed a bit of recoil on your stroke is it beneficial to hold the finish?🤔 👍
Considering the idea was to try each putter and look at the data at the end of seems like that idea went out the window with the first 35" putter! !
Had a putter fitting with James before the lockdown. Ended up with a Scotty Phantom X 35 inches in length and my putting has improved, taking a good 5 to 6 shots of a round on putting alone, well worth it .
I can’t see what difference it would make if you take the same posture all the time and allow your hands to rise and fall. I do this all the time especially when on sloping ground. Furthermore I vary the strike point on the face on purpose especially when confronted with a slippy downhill putt where I lighten my grip and hit off the toe. A putter is like any other club you don’t have to have your hands in the same place you can go up and down to finesse a wedge shot for example. By the same token the face of your wedge my be opened or hooded?
I’m wondering if a different head on your putter would improve your striking?
What about just moving your hands up or down the shaft?
I just wonder how much shorter shafts like Lefty's putters are fitted with can make the owner feel comfortable.
Would be interesting to see where the COG is on the putter
Back problems aside. Surely the smaller the putter i.e. a 33 over a 34 would also provide greater accuracy as you are closer to the ball and have greater control, right?
So 34' bent upright 1 degree to bring you strike into the middle like the 33".... thats my take from this video and your preferred feel and stroke?
With the smaller one could it not just be that the back issue is more because of it feeling different rather than actually being a problem. So would you get used to it in time? It may then give better figures perhaps?
When trying putters of different lengths, you have to consider your putting history. It's no surprise that Dan's most consistent putting was with the 34" putter -- he's been using it forever and his body and his putting technique has adapted to that. But the data suggests that the 33" might be a better fit for his frame. He needs to spend some time to see if he can become more comfortable with it. Then he might regain his consistency, but with a better strike position on the face.
Super vid. Very enlightening. Oh and btw aren’t you good! (No seriously. You are good)
But what could he have done to bring your contact point to more in the center with the 34” putter?
So, is it best to be very consistent with a 'not ideal' strike position, or slightly less consistent with an ideal strike location? 🤔 Just a thought, why not try the 33" putter with a slightly wider stance so you keep your spine in its current posture and you give yourself a potentially 'firmer' base as a consequence...🙂👍🙏⛳️🏌️🍻
Where can we get a samlab fitting Dan?
Why wouldn't you try and make the length 33.5" and dial in centre strive that way?
What about adjusting the lie on the 34”?
Dan, how tall are you? Also, what is your wrist to floor measurement?
Couldn’t even tell you the length of any putter I’ve ever had. Went through a spell a few years back where I changed every few months, but it was all on feel. Two years ago got my very old Ping JB5 refurbished beautifully at Ping HQ, never looked back, or even thought of digging out my SC, or TM Ghost LE, or any of the others in the garage or loft. For me, all feel and between the ears. Interesting data though. Very educational
What would happen Dan with a 33 1/2 in putter ,
What about lengths in between - 34.5” etc. curious what the numbers should show if you were to split the difference between 33 and 34” given consistency was good in one but centered strike was better in the other.

Yes my thought exactly. Id bet 33.75 or 33.5 would be THE one for Dan
