1:58 I knew this was coming! And I am so glad that you said it. I also watched this film the least out of the GH films Bruce made when I was younger. There is a lot of dialogue and it certainly felt longer than The Big Boss. I appreciated the theatricality and feel of the film, but I certainly preferred The Big Boss for it's gritty tone and updated look for 1971. I've grown to like Fist of Fury more and the fight sequences are still wonderful. But it still feels fresh every time I see it. I love the new Arrow set and can't wait to see more of your reviews from it. Another great review!

Fist of Fury is my favourite Golden Harvest produced Bruce Lee movie, just behind Enter the Dragon (Warner Bros). Another great video essay. Keep up the great work. 👍 👏

@@reel_reflections - I feel it has some of Bruce Lee’s best martial arts fighting. Way of the Dragon has some good fights but it is waaaaay too campy for me and that’s a shame. The Big Boss is my least favourite. I think even just the fights in the Pagoda towards the end of Game of Death are better.

@@cheekster777 the Game of Death fights in their totality are really something. Can't wait to view them again. As you can tell from the video on Way of the Dragon I'm a lot more fond of it than you are perhaps haha.

The reason for his supposed being 'moody' is due to the setting of the film in terms of era. The film was apparently well received by Chinese audiences when released. In terms of 'Imperialism', I'm not sure you understand the relationship between China and Japan. Yes, it could be argued that the film is 'anti-Japanese'. But you have to see things from the perspective of the film makers who experienced these things first hand. The film has been remade again with Jet Lee in the Bruce Lee role. But no nunchakus in the film. When the film was put on DVD by that time the censorship on nunchakus had gone in the UK. You make some interesting points nonetheless. Personally I like Way of the Dragon the most out of the adult films Bruce Lee made.

I have to agree with you and what you stated on about 'imperialism' is perfectly correct. Having been a Bruce Lee fan for 50 years I used to train with Chinese martial artists and I got a real insight from them into why ' Fist of Fury' was so revered by Hong Kongers at the time of its release. It also was a smash hit in the UK when it was released (oddly enough on the very day Bruce passed away in Hong Kong). Bruce Lee did not want to play the country bumpkin all the time and was very drawn to the character of Chen Zhen and he took the acting style of a favourite Japanese action hero of his and applied it to this film. By the way, I highly reccomend reading " The intercepting Fist" by Steve Kerridge, which is the most in depth making of 'fist of fury' ever published. I think the young man doing the review might then understand how these films were viewed and recieved in the 1970's than our politcally correct times we have now. The white suit Bruce Lee wears at the beginning of the film is the colour of mourning in China. Chen's character is a man sent over the edge of sanity by his revered masters death and that is why he is hysterical at the funeral. I can tell you from the point of view of Chinese kung Fu students, the Sifu is often more revered than their own fathers.I would also suggest the reviewer reads the 200 page booklet that comes with the boxset as each film is reviewed here in detail. For me 'Fist of Fury' is Bruce Lee's best film and most action packed. I think the younger generation tend to get bored quickly with any action picture where there is a certain amount of dialogue. Bruce Lee didnt like films that were just fighting all the time and a lot of Hong kong films were like that. Watching 'fist of fury' in its mandarin language with subtitles rather than the englsih dub, the viewer gets a great insight into not only the character of Chen Zhen who, remember, proclaims himself to be" The worst student at Ching Wu" and for good reoson - because that line has a double meaning in it. The original dialogue also reveals more about the plot and the motivations of the characters than the dub does. Another thing strange thing. Despite the anti japanese theme - this film was a massive hit when it was released in Japan - they loved it. But to be fair, Bruce Lee himself was concerned with the overt racism of the film and actually didnt agree with it. This caused a lot of conflict with Lo Wei, the films director, and that is one of the reosons why Bruce never worked with Lo Wei again.
