Fishing Sun Protection Clothing Review | What REALLY Works!

Sun Protection Clothing for fishing and UPF Factors, What Really Works! I was diagnosed in 2016 with malignant melanoma (skin cancer) after noticing a very small spot on the side of my neck looked a little different and asked my family doctor about it. Well one procedure, a surgery and 3 years later and I've been blessed to be cancer free. I still see a dermatologist several times a year. After my surgery I began to really research sun protection clothing and what brand and manufactures really worked and why so I could continue to enjoy fishing and the outdoors without head to toe sunscreen . I've been through a ton of different brands and learned more about UPF, UVA, UVB and SPF factors than I ever cared to. Hopefully this video will serve as a guide to spending time on the water fishing or in the outdoors with a new level of protection and knowledge to keep you or a family member safe.

Running/hiking clothing works fairly well (And better tested). The mesh layers on those clothing are typically offset (you won't see through but it has venting still). Also you should look at hooded gaiters/sunmask with the extended collars that go up to the shoulders.

I'm lucky enough to live near a Columbia factory store and can get some pretty good deals there and if I remember right that's where I picked it up at. I did fine one on E-Bay at this link for you. www.ebay.com/itm/Columbia-PFG-Shirt-Omni-Freeze-Zero-Sweat-Activated-Cooling-Long-Sleeve-Large/164300585801?hash=item264113fb49:g:MjkAAOSwAORfF0GL Hope this helped some and thanks for watching!

people still are just too ignorant about sun damage and cancer. Recently I reffed soccer for 4 years in Texas summers, 100 degree days, 8 hours a day many weekends and some of the fields had no cover between games. For years the rules were as a referee you could NOT wear a hat or any type of sun glasses to protect your eyes. You only relied on the sunscreen to proect your head and your eyes were just out of luck. Just within the past couple of years did they start letting us wear hats and slightly tinted glasses after a referee died of skin cancer.

I have several of the Huk neck gaiters. I have one of the older ones that is the straight tube style and a couple of the newer style with the longer neck cut and flared collar. The old style is to short the newer ones I like but they are a tad tight. My two favorites are the Columbia and the Buff UVX, both with flared collars which can tuck into the shirt. Both are also super light, have breathing holes and very comfortable. Thanks for watching!

I think it would be just fine. Here in Southern Indiana it's super humid and they work great. As a side note I fished in Venice LA. several years ago and it was awesome and the Magellan shirts worked great.

Shwew! So glad they added SPF to these shirts because I was so busy getting an all over burn and tan wearing my long pants and my shirts. When I was a kid i'd come home and have the worst sunburn on my ass from all that sun shining through my jeans. Now I can wear a nice short sleeve shirt while I'm out on the river all day and get that nice farmer's tan i was never able to get before from simply wearing a short sleeve shirt. IS THIS MARKETING CAMPAIGN CRAZY??! EVERY SHIRT I'VE EVER WORN IS SPF 2,000. Now it's a sales point for marketing? Try "any thin cotton western style shirt off the rack of farm and fleet in the year 1978."

Well here in Southern Indiana where it's 1008 degree in the shade in the summertime with a heat index of 98% you CAN wear cotton or burlap or corduroy or a Velcro suit if you like but it will be incredibly hot and uncomfortable. Now this might not matter to you but for folks like myself who spend over 200 days on the water a year cool comfort is a big factor and I've fished all over the country and as far south as Mexico and their is no contest between cotton and a spandex/ polyester blend. Just like a white cotton t-shirt has a UPF of 3-8 tops, a blended performance shirt is usually 40-50 UPF. If you think these shirts work and feel like cotton or jeans you've obviously never worn them. Also you might want to learn the difference in SPF (as you stated) and UPF. UPF measures the amount of UV radiation that can penatrate fabric and reach your skin. Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, is based on the time it takes for UV-exposed skin to redden or burn. They've never "added SPF" to any shirt. Also another distinction: UPF measures both UVB and UVA rays, while SPF measures only UVB. Hope that clears it up for ya.

@@BlueLineFishing Well then just call it a "cool shirt." Hell, ALL shirts are SPF 1000. Everybody wants something scientific sold to them. Meanwhile it's as scientific as "all shirts totally block the sun and some are cooler and that's the one i'll buy for guiding on the Florida flats." Cause, you know, it's hot on the Florida flats. And also southern Indiana. I guess my point is "marketing is a really hokey business."

Inflammatory highly oxidative industrial gmo sprayed grain oils (“vegetable” oils) are possibly one of the primary reasons for skin cancer when reacting to the UV. Native populations never had the levels we do now. Since the late 1800s we are up like 24x the consumption of poly unsaturated fatty acids. Way way too much. Add in endless sugars and it’s a bad combo.
