Hi Belle, I use different rods depending on the species I'm chasing. Because you are going around Xmas and want to involve the kids, I'd suggest chasing Whiting. They hold close to the beach, making it easier for small kids to join in. You don't need expensive or specialized gear to chase whiting. Any soft rod will do around the 2-4kg range. I prefer the longer rods up to around 10ft as they allow me to cast well back from the waters edge. I don't like standing near the water as I believe it spooks whiting. Kids will often out fish the adults, I think it's because they are shorter 😜Keep the rods shorter for the kids, they'll enjoy it more of is easy. Around 6ft is fine. Having said all that my favorite whiting rod is a Snyder glass 10ft 6in Crusoe island. Keep everything light, 3 or 4kg line (6 or 8lb), a size 4 hook, small swivel and small sinker. Worms are my favorite bait.

It'll depend on the wind and weather. No point in being uncomfortable. If it's light wind then I prefer main beach. Fish the small blind gutters on an outgoing tide for whiting. I prefer half tide down to the bottom of the tide. If it's a Northerly wind you can fish the calm section along the very south end of main beach. It's only accessable at low tide though and it's important to head back up the beach before you get stuck there (it's a 12hour wait). If it's blowing hard from the SE or East then you can hide from the wind along Flinders beach. There's other beaches you can try to but some don't have vehicle access.
