Hey Ben, here in Canada a Beanie is a Touque pronounced TWO not TOE. BTW. I've just been upgrading my fishing hat from a crusty old sweaty Dad hat to a flatter brim/bill hat. Wife doesn't like it. Which make me like even more.

Hahahaha, I was crying at this one. The athlete sleeping on the ground made my drink come out of my nose. I was very impressed that you tried to use the word toque (as beanies are known in Canada), but you pronounced it wrong. It's "too-k" not "tow-k", "too" with a hard k sound at the end. It's a dumb french word, so you don't lose any cool points. I'm just impressed that you brought it up at all! I guess I'm old too cause my "brim" is always curved, flat brims give me the heebie - jeebies! Lol!

I wear a hat. But, as evidenced by me paying some dollars to fish "private waters" and coming up pretty much empty (I caught one fish over the course of 8 hours), I can attest that I SUCK AT FLY FISHING! But thanks to you and the 4.5 inch trout I did catch and release (God I hope Freda lived), I shall not surrender. I will fish again. But I will only pay for gas and a few flies. Getting skunked for free is FREEDOM!

I prefer these. Also liked his fly tying videos. I always thought the Gurgler was stupid but Ben tied one so I thought I would give it a try. It tears them up. It is now one of my go to patterns.

Hey Huge, What do I do with my old flies? For example, I have a yellow foam grasshopper that is chewed up and missing all the legs on the right side. It still caught fish on Sunday but since I tied some more I am unlikely to use it again. Do I chuck it? Repurpose the hook (yes I am cheap). Squirrel it away just in case? Try to tie new legs on? PS. I suck at fly fishing.

I try to give that stuff away if it’s not too beat up. Taking a razor blade to it and re-using the hook is a viable option too.

There is a sub-species of the long bill that has a mullet style flap in the back that makes you look like Jar-Jar Binks from Star Wars. They are highly effective at blocking sun, but at the cost of your dignity.

I note that you dodged the “trucker hat” mesh ball cap sub species altogether. Granted I think they suck, but I’m old with thinning hair and looking to avoid the screen door sunburn scenario.

JB, I fish for Northern pike, perch and occasionally zander in Belgium and The Netherlands. Hence the ‘lucky hat’ donated to me by Beaver Slivinski from the US is very dear to me. He sent me a new one this year, can’t for the life of me remember the ‘lucky hat’ ever looked that awesome! It is so tathered by sun and rain that you couldn’t say one looked like the other 20 years ago 😁

My bitch ex has my lucky fishing hat at her place and she blocked me so I have no way to get it back 😒

Hats - also useful for deflecting flies, split shot, etc., being propelled at warp speed by errant casts. Don't leave home without one.

My current favorite hat is my Abouttrout hat. I also like to collect flyshop hats to show support, unless they're dicks. As if they created flyfishing. Definately do the stockin hat in the cold months

The lucky hats are the ones you hide from your wife. Otherwise, they “disappear” when you go out and you have to make do with the “acceptable” replacements she gets for you! 😂😂

What about straw cowboy hats? Or Red Green style bucket hats? Also the bill sticks out in front (baseball caps), a brim circumnavigates your noggin.

You’re an ear tucker!? ear tuckers should be in the same tier as “tight lines” and fishstagramming buttery browns. With all that hair I never noticed. I guess I learn something new every time I watch. Still not tucking my ears though.

Hat under hood, hood goes over hat all the way over the bill of the hat. The wind from the flats boat will hold it there. Any other way and you’re a goof.

Personally I believe Shyanne Orvis is an elite level angler, also I believe her new born needs glasses and a hat while being on her chest in the middle of the river.

Listen to your wife and wear sunblock. Maybe it's a pain now but believe me having Moh's procedures to remove skin cancers from your face and neck when you are in you 60's or 70's is far, far worse

I second the sunscreen recommendation. The sun's rays bounce off the water onto your face, juking your hat. I now wear both. Better late than never. My Moh's procedure hole was big enough to fit a couple old size silver dollars in. I had a handy temple coin purse until the hole healed in. I could have had the procedure done earlier in my 50's than I did, but that would have required going to a dermatologist earlier too. A buddy (also mid 50's) had to have his whole face skinned and replaced with his own butt skin. Ouch.

Yep. I wear a wide brimmed hat so I don't have to put sunscreen on the tops of my ears, but it does go on my face and neck. Everything else is covered up. Hands too. I've had too many sunburned hand days so they get sunscreen as well.
