Fishing GLOMAR SHOAL | Pushing Our Boat to its LIMITS | $$$
After 2 years of checking, waiting, and wishing, for all of the moving parts in life, and the perfect weather forecast to align. It was finally here.
A day, or a week, of weather that would finally allow us to stretch our boat beyond its tested capabilities, to fish new waters that we've only been able to dream of until now.
With wind speeds averaging 2-8 knots for an entire week, and coming into neap tides, we were able to make the call, take the day off work, and reach the Glomar Shoal.
At its closest point, the shoal is approximately 130km from Karratha, Western Australia, making it twice the distance offshore of anything we'd previously fished in our 17ft vessel.
What separates this shoal from the likes of neighbouring Barrow, or the Montebello Islands, is that there is no land or islands to shelter into should things turn south. It's one way out, and one way home, with a whole lot of hoping the weather man got it right.
Loaded up with our 95L onboard fuel tank, and additional 160L in Jerry cans, we were taking no chances with fuel consumption being any issue, and making the most of our time and day in the area.
Time restricted due to life's commitments, it was a 3am departure, driving into total darkness for 3 hours on the open sea, where we reached our destination perfectly timed for sunrise. We then fished throughout the day and into the afternoon, heading home with the sunset and reaching land safely after dark.
With no previous fish marks or experience to go off, it was a textbook case of finding the sweet spot between searching for the optimal ground to fish, and actually having a line in the water to catch them, with the clock constantly ticking.
In all, we had a great day, we caught plenty of good fish despite having to work for them through the sharks, and we'd do it all again. Eden saved the day as always! We got a taste of what we hope it'd be, and it's left us wanting more.
We're soon coming into Whale season in our waters where they'll be migrating through, and this makes for very difficult boating in the hours of the night. It may very well be another year or two before everything aligns once again for us to reach this location in our little humble tinny and try it all again, but we look forward!
Separate notes:
Total fuel consumption: approximately 150L, averaging around 1L/nautical mile. This meant we only had to use 3 of the 8 Jerry cans we allowed for reserve fuel.
Our vessel: Quintrex 520 Top Ender Pro with a 115hp Yamaha 4stroke outboard. Garmin Force electric trolling motor (this greatly reduces our fuel consumption around idle speeds)
Depths fished: 40-90m. Most productive depth; 45m, but also most troublesome for shark bite offs.
Fish species caught: SHARKS, Long Nose Emperor, Common Coral Trout (Blue Spotted), Red-throat Emperor (Sweet Lip), Cobia, Yellow Spotted Cod, Frostback Cod, Tomato Cod, Red Emperor, Saddle Tail Snapper (Large Mouth Nannygai), Rankin Cod, Mackeral Tuna, Rosy Jobfish (Sharptooth/Goldband Snapper).

That was an interesting fishing trip 👍 just enjoyed watching it so much 💯 The long nose great looking fish , I would be very interested on your opinion of the taste . Your emperors are called Red Snappers here (in the USA) and cost about $ 25 / pound or more !!! Delicious catch , try them sushi style , YUM !!!! If you didn't know LOL ............

Good eye! We're not too sure about that one, I was leaning towards possibly a small fish frame that we'd used as bait and thrown over, but it looks like it just pops up for a second and disappears again. There were plenty of pelagic fish and sneasnakes on the surface throughout the day, so more likely that! Thanks for watching 🙂

Wow, long way out, mate ! I just ordered the Top Ender 500 and am happy to take it out 20 klms from Mandurah. How are you finding the Top Ender and the Garmin Force ? My Minn Kota Alterra has a 60-inch shaft, but I found it pops out in heavy seas on my Crossfire 449 !

Awesome mate, I'm sure you'll love it! 20kms from Mandurah is very different to 20kms from Karratha, we will very rarely get a swell over 2ft up here, so we generally only factor wind and tide changes when it comes to rough seas. As for the 57" Force, I love it and it performs great. The prop definitely pops out in rougher seas for a quick breathe but those days are very rare up here so it's not an issue for us. Whereas the fixed shaft length of 57" does us wonders because we'll often use it in shallow grounds (islands, reefs) and not having to worry about it hanging too deep under the keel of the boat and snapping it off is a very good trade off for us. We'll generally run aground before any risk of damaging the shaft or prop. If we were in Perth, we'd definitely go the Force Kraken with a 72" shaft or there abouts, but for us up here in the North, she's set up perfectly. Enjoy your new boat when she arrives 🍻
Great video, shame about the sharks I got tired of driving 15 hours from Perth just to feed the sharks, so I came up with my secret weapon, I now almost never have a shark problem, no more gear loses and heads of fish I wanted to keep😀

Hey mate the spin jigging rods are Oceans Legacy in a couple of different sizes from Pe2-Pe6 or thereabouts 🙂
Rohan interested to know how much fuel you used, how much you had and the size of your boat tank Did you use the 3rds rule

Hey Michael, we ended up using approx 150L or 1/L to a nautical mile. The drive out and back we maintained a pretty constant cruise of 22knots/4400RPM so it was quite fuel efficient. 30 knots for probably the last 10 mile home in the dark. The rule of thirds applies to all of our trips as a minimum, nothing worse than stressing about fuel instead of just enjoying your day to full capacity. Our boat tank is 95/L, we had 160L in jerry cans (8 of), returned home with plenty in the tank, and 100L (5 of) Jerry's untouched 🙂

@@BurrupAndAway Those shoals were 70NM out so caution is king You certainly did your homework, I would have done the same Flat batteries and running out of fuel are sea rescue’s most common calls by far That weather window you picked looked amazing Looking forward to your next video

Silly and not worth risking your life ……. Had a couple of mates over the years caught out in squalls out there that were not forecast in 7 meter plus boats and there is no where to run and hide. One experienced mate had 40knot squall come out of nowhere and had to ride it out for over 40 minutes he was scared to turn the boat into the mountains that appeared …… plenty of other great places to go ….. Glomar is not a good idea in a 5 meter Boat regardless how good the weather might look

Absolutely mate, I don't disagree at all and genuinely appreciate your input. In this instance, this was the middle day of what was about 10 straight days of 0-8 knot winds and, more importantly to me, close to neap tides. A little bit of wind with a big tide change is my personal least favourite to be amongst. I got about 2 hours sleep the night before making sure that I'd prepared everything to my absolute best to make sure we came home safely, we rolled the dice, and fortunately, it all went well. We wouldn't have gone if there wasn't such a good and clear forecast for 3+ days either side of the day we chose to go out, and although squalls do happen, we had some confidence that if something did come over, it'd pass and we'd get home when the wind eventually drops back down. I trust my boat and my abilities, but more importantly, being 17ft and without a windscreen, it gives me zero false confidence to make sure I am extremely sensible (within reason obviously) when it comes to taking on the open seas 🌊 thanks mate 🍻
