    24bidy You need a licence which specifies where you'll be trapping, because there are places that still have the native species, so obviously they don't want anyone trapping there. There was a guy who got fined £4000 for trapping and killing the endangered British crayfish. Another thing to consider is that the EA likes to collect information, so they ask licence-holders to report back to them on the size and number of signals they're catching, to give them a better idea of population size.

    Here in Texas sometimes when our pond dries due to drought it will stay dry for years and it is HOT and you'd think nothing would be able to survive those hellish conditions but you'd be wrong, if you start digging you'll find them and they'll be fat and happy as if nothing bad is happening. They are the perfect plague.

    Same with mitten crab! These sucker was let loose in the 30's and now the Thames is full of them. Same in the U.S. California is getting swamped by them and the local government is fretting their hands on how to control them. I say that's easy! Just let the local Chinese have at them and within two years they'd be gone! But noooo like the Brits, we are too worried about new colonies popping up so noooo you are not allowed to do that! While we are still fretting our hands. Stupid I tell you!

  • @StryderK

    @StryderK

    James Humphrey James, you have no idea how VORACIOUS Chinese can get on mitten crabs! I lived in Shanghai for six years and every mid Sept. to around end of October, it's mitten crabs season and...Well, the local Chinese absolutely suck them down like a hungry baby sucking down milk. As Gordon said, Chinese absolutely love them and are willing to pay silly money for them! There was a story that a local British town were, key word on WERE inundated with them. Then some Chinese forest worker took notice, took some home and cook them up...It soon not only became popular with the local Chinese folks, but the local British as well and within two years, the local mitten crab population died! Again, as Gordon said, the greatest way to control these suckers is to eat them...And Britain, like the U.S. has a sizable Chinese population now! So, fretting about mitten crabs? Let the local Chinese have at them! Trust me, sometimes I'M DYING for some mitten crabs! They are delicious with a capital D!

    Uhhh Ramsay, I think you're overlooking the obvious year: Louisiana crawdad boil. THAT is how they would get cooked in America and the UK deserves to know the recipe!! Roughly it is about 2 pounds of crayfish, some hardshell clams, some spicy chorizo (or smoked Louisiana andouille if you can make a special order) corn on the cob, the holy trinity of bell peppers, onion, and carrot, and a lady's stocking of the spice mix. Put in a very big stockpot and slowly boil it, using the stocking as a means of imparting flavor into the meat. Put on picnic table covered in newsprint. Eat everything with your hands, and with the crawfish, pinch the head, suck the butt!!!

    Interestingly the natural predators to the Signal Crayfish include Otters, Mink and Heron. The main reason these predators struggle to combat them is because the Crayfish are nocturnal and they burrow, making them harder to find and catch in the wild. But its because Crayfish eat everything that there are so many of them and it makes them great for supporting higher trophic caps in the ecosystem, but the populaiton must be sustainable and these crayfish are just too good at staying alive in an environment where humans have been poaching predators for fur or pest control... If humans became the new main predator of the Signal Crayfish it would mean taking allot of trophic energy out of the rivers and into human homes, this may help eutrophic systems to stabilise but humans haven't really been known for their restraint when it comes to resources...

    You didn't name a single fish species that eats them such as channel catfish, walleye, trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, pike and muskellunge. Everyone keeps saying that they are nocturnal. Not to say they are not active at night but I fish during the day and fill buckets full of them. They do like shady spots when the sun is beating down.

    ***** I live in WA state. I swim in a stream and see these things all the time. I have even caught a few and put them in my aquarium. Are they native here?

    Jw4n9 If they have the white spot on the claw, they are Signal Crawfish. They are entirely legal to catch and eat in Washington State (I live in WA as well). They are native here.

    If you can't eat them fast enough? Great compost for the soil.

    Wow. people in the USofA eat these every chance they get if they get that big. We have crawfish boil that a kick to the tongue.
