If I understood Matt, the directional valve sending the oil to the motor to turn your drum, then the return flows to a flow control valve going to the spooler could put the camera on the spooler to see how it actually works, I've worked 45 years in the marine industry so the gearing interest me a lot. Keep the interesting video coming, happy new year.

You should look into Garmin with relief shading. I fish in PWS as much as possible and love it! Garmin has been updating to hi visibility and you can see the reefs and no guessing.

Octopus recipe for Matt Freeze the octopus for about three days it helps tenderize it Boil it for 45 minutes more or less with old bay, cilantro, and whatever else you want to put in there, pull it out when it’s tender enough to stick a fork in easily Marinate it in olive oil, cilantro, and then again, anything else you wanna add to it and then put it on the grill just until the skin chars a little bit usually only a minute or so per side

Thanks for the posting and explanation how you are using the bottom mapping feature to select a route to lay a set. I would like to see more, especially what you would want to avoid. Oh, did you way point the crab pot that your set rubbed up against. LOL

Once again the video was awesome! As far as where you put the camera and the views, put it where you can do the job the safest way possible so everyone goes home safely at the end of the day. You don’t need to put yourself in harm’s way just to get a shot or to include everyone in the video, there will be other times for that. The families safety is the most important thing, other than catching the fish. Take care.

Love you guys , but you could attach a buoy on the lost gear and later try to retrieve it back to shore , this way you are actually cleaning the sea and your fishing spot ! Next time give it a try , that would make also a very good video and probably a lot of likes . All the best and a happy new year !

Happy New Year. I would recommend you switch out that quartz halogen work light on the starboard pole with an LED floodlight. Easier on your gen set and gives a bright daylight illumination compared to the Quartz orange light. I have been changing them out for the past few years. Just got to my tripod double head worklights I got at Costco many years ago. I kept the stands and just swapped the lights. Amazing how 6500K LEDs make a much better worklight. I use 200 or 150 watt LEDs and notice while they do put out heat it is much much less than the quartz. Get the IP69 rated for saltwater use. Another advantage is you aren't changing expensive quartz halogen bulbs anymore.

i thought you guys also said it was a shot of line that was to strong for your application that may have been a problem with the lovejoys breaking. regardless billet is better than sand cast.

I’ve been addicted to your to your videos I work for a while on Stone crab boats, and scallop boats in Florida Being from Minnesota, I never spent any time around the ocean, and wanted to experience that It’s a lot of hard work my first time out on a stone crab boat and we hooked the boy for the crab trap and the captain gone the engine and was racing towards the next one and I said why is he going so fast? The deckhand that was training me said well we have 200 we’re gonna do today if you take an extra one minute per trap do you want to stay out here an extra 200 minutes

This angle on the camera is not good. We like seeing you pulling the big ones into the boat from a better angle. You need to rig an arm that extends out pointing in. Love you guys👍🏻

We the oldies here always apreciate the videos . Happy new year to everyone with health and peace . I always wanted to ask you guys , out of the mix of baits you use everytime .Will it be worth to write down what was the bait each particular fish ate ? What size was the fish ? Area and date it was cought etc ? I know all this will be crazely time consuming . But my question is lets say you had all these data from last year . You thing that those data would have help you in any way for the next season ? And of course in a sizeable way . Will that be some measureble improvment in you catch ? Also you have show us before many times that you do collect and write those data for authorities every time . And finaly the institutes are they release every year the data they collect from all fishermen , that have like area , tones of catch collected there , type of fish etc ? So maybe you can use them as reference for next years ?

Not sure about the data collection but we definitely take note of what bait we are catching on. A lot of the time in the summer halibut hit on salmon, and during the spring and fall we use more pollock. Happy New Year to you as well!

Why is it again that you put the halibut belly up I remember you saying one time the reason but have forgotten. The other question is you mentioned that you would show and tell about the connectors between your lengths of your longline system. Thanks, Rob! Q1: White side up is to keep blood from collecting on the white side, makes the fish more appealing for fresh markets. Q2: They are called sea links, basically a piece of chain with a diamond shaped slot where they can interlink to each-other when you turn them. If camera could be mounted at dad's 11:00 o'clock, while he is facing the starboard while hauling, we could see more of the catch. Just saying. Been watching for long time. #1 videos...

Yep! The camera shots on the new boat will be pretty good i feel. More space to mount it without disturbing the shot.

Love your vids So I have a question... Im currently a mate for 2 charter boats, 1 is a good party boat the other a tuna / marlin type boat. Love my job. However I'm also very interested in trying commercial fishing. Worked for a small commercial boat last winter hauling pots. Didn't like it, and I was warned from many people about working for this particular captain, take from that what you will. With that in mind, are most commerical captains super fast paced and extremely impatient, and particularly vocal about their hair trigger impatience, or are there more vessels that operate at a slower, smoother pace like you guys run your operation? If so, I would love to try it again.

I would think stripes of bait would work better than chunks. The flounder I know are visual feeders. But maybe halibut aren't. Must be very dark down there.

I notice that you all seem to use Dexter (not the series) knives onboard. I have also acquired Dexter knives over the years as I like to cook and I find these to be of exceptional value. Lately I have struggled with mine as they have lost their edge and the ability to sharpen with a steel and instead probably needs to be sent to a professional to put on the proper edge and sharpness. What do you all do to keep your knives in operational quality? I can only guess in your situation that having a dull knife is more than just an annoyance, it is also a risk to appendages.

Yes, we do love the Dexters and ours too lose their edge occasionally. We clamp them securely and take a file to the edge, trying to maintain a consistent angle. Following up with wetstone and steel. It gets tham back in shape, but nowhere close to a professional job ;). You are also correct, A dull knife is dangerous.

Matt, what are the plans for the two boats? Are you skippering one and is dad the other?

Them are the rubber gloves I thought they were stronger because mine rip my skin open if you wear additional gloves under them tell me wat it is fresh bait cool

where do you get your white handle knives from? they appear to have a VERY SHARP edge

The knife brand is called VictorKnox and you can get them from most commercial fishing stores.

The white handled ones are Dexter Sanisafe knives. Victorinox do make excellent knives too, we have a couple we use at home.

Guys, what are those those lumpy things that you shake off? Could they be starfish?

They are probably sunflower sea star that you're seeing. We catch them a lot in the shallows and on reefs.

The Halibut is what you filleted up a bit? I take it you're filleting it so that you get twice as much bait out of the fish rather than just chopping like the pollack? Bummer you guys couldn't do something to clean up that old gear. I would have thought you could have pulled it up with your hook winch? Put on some leather gloves and to protect from the frayed/sharp stainless lines?

Hey I enjoy watching you all check fish. And is matt married if not he needs find him a woman. And your younger son he does look like he enjoys fishing. Your wife seems like she likes it that's good. I think for you to reach your goals you all need a bigger boat if you all want to do what you say you want to do. So to that thank you all for doing the things you all do.

I'm sorry, I love your videos. However, hauling halibut from rear afforded better view of action. Plus, it allowed other family members to be visible. Seems like you have less room this way. Just saying.
