I went to Otaru Port at 3:30 in the morning. I heard that big mackerel were being caught, so I went fishing with a flasher rig (SABIKI).
I was lucky to catch a big mackerel immediately. But I soon stopped catching any. Looking closely, I saw that there were a lot of fish swimming around, eating the krill in the ground bait.
I thought that maybe they had discerned my flasher rig, so I changed to a trick flasher rig. Trick flasher rig is used by rubbing krill on the hook. Flasher rig is made of film that imitates krill, but trick one is used with real krill attached to the hook. Because it is real, you can catch a lot of fish, but the bait falls off easily, so you need to rub krill frequently. So I use normal flasher rig at first, and when they discern it and I can no longer catch any, I switch to trick one.
As planned, as soon as I changed to trick one, I started catching fish. The largest mackerel was a little over 30 cm. Mackerel of this size are fun to catch and delicious to eat. After a while, the fish I caught changed to sardines. We caught one halfbeak about 35 cm long. We also caught some dace, but only two, and in the latter half of my fishing, it was mostly sardines. Some time, I caught four sardines at once.
I could have continued catching more, but I had caught enough, so I went home at 6 o'clock.
I made halfbeak into sashimi. I froze them because we were worried about parasites.
I simmered the large mackerel in miso and deep-fried the smaller mackerel. I simmered the sardines with ginger in a pressure cooker, broiled them with soy sauce, and deep-fried them.
It was two and a half hours, but it was a very fun fishing trip.
