The chunks out of the fish in the bait ball they’ve been smashed

We noticed that. Occasionally they'd get hit when the boat was away from the ball.
They dont look that healthy in the bait ball there seem to be a lot with lesions and looking very ratty. Why?

They were being hit, likely by small Tuna. Our theory is that this bait ball is a shadow of it's original size
