He misses the point about the bird beak with the cat fish. Tier Zoo wasn't criticising catfish for not being able to defend from a beak, he was criticising the fact that they spent their evolution points on a system of defence that provides no advantage in that matchup. they would have a better matchup against birds if they invested into better mobility or stealth as opposed to defensive venom.

Because defensive attributes are evolved against primarily predators. Birds are not the primary enemy of catfish. In addition I've seen catfish eat ducks so does that make ducks low tier? Again it's against your primarily predators.

At least TierZoo is capable of explaining what he does with a scientific answer, without threatening you with giant spiders or totally false biology

Yeah, I think he considers the experience a player would have, rather than how a species is overall. He definitely takes into consideration how individuals work together in groups, but not really how they function as a species, since that doesn't really work as well in the frame of a video game.

Mans biggest complaint was "IDK what a tier list is or how it works"

There was mention that certain animals are "well-adapted to their environment" For TZ, being strong across different biomes is a factor in his ranking. Being strong in only one environment is B-tier at best, so Bass being over-powered in only 1 environment got the B-tier, since TZ doesn't think Bass/Bass-like fish could be just as strong somewhere else. Special Abilities also tend to get promoted higher than their irl value.

I think I know why you guys disagree so much. AVNJ has a sort of absolute or linear scaling where as tier zoo's is more exponential. With AVNJ's scaling, nearly any animal that has a sustainable niche with low likelihood of predation/environmental death would be near top tier. The issue is that this would mean something other apex predators would be at the same level as a human which are significantly more OP and accounted for in exponential scaling. Also tier zoo's focus seems to be on who would you play if you were going to pick a fish as opposed to judging them based on how well adapted they are to their environment which seems to be AVNJ's rating.

yeah playstyle will definitely drive stat alocation to diferent places, TZ also highly favors team strategies whereas others might do hit and runs or ambush strats, all viable, but diferent and require diferent sets of stats

And because the game is so big and versatile there's a huge amount of players giving respect to less frequent playstyles and getting more specific with their attributes which some might not agree is optimal.

yeah , i mean someone might argue that sponges have been around for more than 500 my , and as such have proven themselves capable of survivng with low energy and low payoff strategies ... in a similar way in wich sea horses do : they don't have fins because they don't have to swim , they can grab on coral and stay there , no energy required , that allows them to play the long game and go for filter feeding , and then use camuflage and armor to avoid confrontations ... it's functioning as a playstyle

So, the fact that he "can't think of a D-tier fish" kinda shows how being a fish biologist puts him too close to the source to be unbiased-- whether or not his argument regarding artificial tier inflation holds water

I think TierZoo rankings are based on an individual player standpoint and how well the gameplay would go if you chose an individual from a certain species, for instance, salmons are not that bad as a species and are well adapted, but since the player only controls one single salmon instead of the whole species, their gameplay could be pretty much trash because of the reasons he stated

That’s how I interpreted it too. If the tier list was based solely on how the species as a whole fairs in its environment rather than how far some single person “playing” that animal could take it, I think it would be a vastly different tier list.

I think he was focusing more on a “gameplay” sort of perspective. So he’s focusing on the idea that you’re playing as an individual fish, not the entire species. So for example, even though the salmon species benefits from the death of some of them, it isn’t beneficial to the “player”.

Same reason why sunfish got the F. They really are'nt fun to play as. Their life sucks. Sure they can stay alive but living is probably hell.

The tier list is about Environmental challenges, dominance and Skills. All fish can get killed by a birth with a long sharp beak but not all fish live where a bird with a long sharp beak can get them. The list is about their survivability, and since he’s making it seem like a game it’s sort of like a recommendation to what you should or should not use.

I really like how TierZoo does his videos, you learn things but the videos are not only informational but actively entertaining.

You're misinterpreting how he's ranking them. He's ranking them from a competitive gameplay standpoint. In a game, the sunfish is absolute trash because it can't do anything, it's super easy to beat with no defense and constant de-buffs so it's an F-tier choice. Salmon in real life are great, but in a game, they have nothing special about them, besides the fact that they make thousands of babies to make up for thousands of deaths. In a game, having to respawn hundreds of times isn't good, that's why it's ranked so poorly. Good video anyway though!

AFAIK sunfish are decently fast when active. They are fast enough to toss themselves out of the water despite their weight. Boney structure also means the can travel from deep water to surface quickl without dying. From what I hear, the are most active in the deep and only come near the surface to rest.

Honestly I'm not 100% on the sunfish F tier ranking after seeing this guy's points. Making yourself a completely irrelevant target, more effort than they're worth, can definitely be viable; it's what poison-focused builds do, after all, and their mimics. Though I wouldn't place it any higher than D tier; they do defense the wrong way, making yourself worthless to eat is nothing compared to making yourself actively harmful to eat.

I think the reason he ranks a lot of them low is because he’s ranking them for individuals rather than as a species. He’s treating life more like a RPG rather than an RTS.

I think the main "point of view" that TierZoo is using is "if you are a game player, and you can pick a class, these are good or bad options" So I agree that from a biological standpoint some fish fill their niche and function. but the whole point of tierzoo's standpoint is that there is more unique, "fun to play" or "easier to play" options. that's how his tierlist is built up.

i would describe avnj reacting to teirzoo is like trying to decide wether or not to be friends with someone by looking at their entire family tree

2 years late, but one of Tierzoo's main things when ranking is how good a species is at spreading and living in other places. If you are very good, then you'll be ranked highly.

In the wild they breed about as readily as black bears, and it's only due to the dramatic loss of bamboo forests that they became threatened. Some might point to the eating of bamboo as a bad idea, but it's not. They live in an environment where nearby several very large cat species, and larger bear species, also exist, so they evolved to survive on a plant no other large animal was eating, well away from tigers and brown bears. They'd be doing just fine if we didn't mess with them.

I think a big difference is that you look at them as a species where some dying isn’t terrible as long as they reproduce enough, whereas he looks at it as the individual and their survival ability and ability to reach the top

my problem with how you rate them is by how they're useful in ecosystem and how the entire species survives and thrives in the system. while the point of the video is how you would play a single individual just like how you would play a single character in an rpg game.

I was snorkeling in Hawaii and i was following a turtle, and when i looked down i saw an eel eyeing me, it actually scared me a little because of shallow water, i made fists so it would go after my fingies.

I think Tier Zoo is looking at this purely in the game setting, like who cares if you can beat the level 1 goblins when you get bodied by the big boss battles

The reason for salmon being low as well is because, again, he is explaining and ranking it in a video game perspective, with each player as one creature. So likely it's because it's bad for the many players who don't have the skill nor knowledge or experience for that class.

I think the tier list is based on the animal by itself and not the species just because it’s a good species doesn’t mean it’s a good well rounded animal by itself

having a tierlist with a simular amount of things in each tier is the sign of a well made list. in the end, a tier list is a line of things ranked, and then folded up. folding it up better, makes a better list

What I think you're missing is that TierZoo's gaming system is from the perspective of playing an individual organism, a _member_ of a species. He's not ranking the species as a whole throughout evolutionary history.

He didn’t put loch ness monster, crabzilla, or megalodon on the list. Unbelievable. Easy S tier.

I actually liked a lot of the opinions you expressed here! Yes, TierZoo is farming and baiting a bit as some must go in bottom-tier, but he heavily emphasizes most of the comparisons are vs. other fish players. If you’re looking for looking at the individual species vs. the animal kingdom as a whole, I’d gladly watch you react to his other videos 😊

Goliath grouper seems to be a nice fish to be outside dealing with humans... Glad that they are a protected fish, though the battle getting one all the way to the boat is wild I know the one I reeled in I didn't have the ass left to have gotten in the boat even if you could keep them LoL.

The whole point of Tier Lists is to list builds in relation to a given Meta, not just rating viability; in this case it's racking up kills and being unkillable, not just surviving.

His tier-construction logic makes more sense. Obviously if F tier were "should not survive" then nobody would be there since everything living today survived until today. And I feel like he mostly uses an individualistic point of view like "if you play as this fish, what are your chances to successfully pass your genes?" which is nice because you need to define some win condition because all of these species are present today so I don't see how you'd rate them otherwise.

The reason some of tierzoo’s tierlisting is different to u what u want is because, tierzoo makes the tier based on individual abilities, current living enviroments duo to humans of a species and solo surviving. The tierlist focusing not on long term survival of the species or what ‘works’ but what animal gives the player the best playthrough for itself.

The tier list he made isn't like you said of F being not functional, it's a tier list of comparison. He got some types of fish, and then compared them all organizing in worse to best. The type of tier list you talked about where their tier is defined by the actual quality is almost never used. It's always comparison. Sometimes people will get all the S things from a list and a make another list with just them. And then some of the Ss will become Fs because they're being compared to the other Ss

I feel like sometimes you would rate the fish in a different way. I feel like you focus on the entire species while tier zoo focuses on the individual fish. And tier zoo kind of treats everything in like an one on one situation, and that's kind of how you would rate it in a video game. Tldr: he takes it in a video game kind of way while you look on it in a realistic kind of way. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Good content anyway

The Seahorses are the "not like other girls" of the ocean

It's important to note that the stats are in relation to every other animal, not just fish. So the INT stat for sunfish is accurate

It's not a tier list for comparing fish for an entire species; It's a tier list for a game. The tiers represent viability in a video game like scenario instead of real life. IRL rules don't really apply very much because the list is from the vision of people playing the animal instead of prolonged survivability like in real life. You kind of have to put someone in F tier and compare because that's what players do in a game. You chose the player with the best stats for your playstyle and as a player, you compare characters subconsciously. It's also just a matter of opinion. That's just my opinion. I think a lot of the disagreements here is that you're looking on a population level and TierZoo is looking on an individual level for how viable these species are? For example, ocean sunfish spawn like 300 million eggs but usually only 1 makes it to adulthood, and I would assume continuously getting bodied as a juvenile isn't exactly fun or rewarding for most people in a video game setting. (time for LARPing as if I was playing the game lol) I've mained the sea otter for a while due to the fact that it's incredibly important on the population level in the biome it's in. Not exactly the most engaging or rewarding playstyle on an individual level, but I definitely appreciate getting messages from fish players or what not appreciating my work into keeping the kelp forest alive.
