Fish are Gasping at Surface for Air? Top of the Tank

Aquarium fish will gasp for air at the surface of the water when there is a lack of oxygen. You need to add a device that brings more oxygenation inside the water. Add an air stone to your fish aquarium to add more oxygen to the water. By adding an air stone to your water you are adding small little mini bubbles which in fact are helping the fish receive oxygen.

Your aquarium fish could be gas being at the surface seeking air because the water is polluted. Test your nitrate levels in your fish tank using a test kit or test strips. If your nitrate levels are over 40 ppm then you need to do a water change and add new water. Nitrate levels that high will cause stress to the fishes gills in actually start to burn their organs.
You can also test the ammonia levels in your aquarium if your fish are gasping for air at the surface. Ammonia levels being read in your aquarium water usually mean that your nitrogen cycle is screwed up inside the fish tank ecosystem. Research how you can fix this nitrogen cycle in your aquarium because it’s adequate for your aquarium fish to excel.

Crazy that you just posted this. I just dealt with this two days ago. Water was just changed 2 days prior. Tested all the water and everything was good. 3 dead fish the next day. I put in a new bubble maker and did another water change and the others are now swimming normally. I’m going to put another air stone in. Thanks for posting this, It helps to know it’s the right move.

Same happened to me
Didn’t think about the heat. I have 1000gal worth of air stones in a 300 gallon pond, and notice my one black moore hangs out by it on occasion. Plant selective on has been brutal in my part of the country this year and the plants I over wintered are only a 4th of what I need. Hoping they start taking off asap 😬
I have rosy barbs,and danios,penguin fish,ive had them 3 years and all are fine apart from one barb that keeps going to surface for air then blows bubbles out its mouth,it swims back and forth constantly and doesn't chill with the rest anymore, he often just sits on the bottom in the same place when not air gulping,ive always had an air stone and have increased suface agitation from the filter outlet,i tried a 50% water change, added water balance,swim bladder, and diseaese treatments but nothing worked,i,m wondering if it need a total water,i dont understan after 3 years theres suddenly not enough oxygen in the water thats only affected one fish,any advice would be hugely appreciated
But bettas have problem with air stone is it true or they will get use to it ??? or the sponge filter with air stone will work fine ? Please reply I really need a help thank you in advance 🙏🏼
Should I do a water change if I’m experiencing this but I’ve only had the tank going for 5 days?
I added an air stone to my tank before writing a huge paragraph asking for help but by the time I was done my fish were fine.

Thanks. My fish after many years started starving for air. I don't understand what we t wrong. This aquarium has been set up for 7 years. So far I lost have the tank. They are pets but it hurts after so many years.
I need some help, I did a water change, ornaments change, and gravel change, after doing all these things, I put a new filter in the tank, new chemicals, and let it run for several hours, then transferred my fish into the tank, they were staying at the top acting as if they needed more air, eventually one after the other died, in a few hours, I have a snow globe bubbler, and a air stone plus the water coming out of the water filtration making bubbles/air in the tank

You can not do everything at onc, if you change gravel ornamnets and water change, leave the dirty filter running, because it will ad that beneficial bacteria into the new water, clean or change the filter after a week, but don't do water change that time. Do not change water and clean the filter at the same time.
I have 3 sponge filters a pond filter that agitates the surface and still they are gasping! Don't know why
