First week of college in NYC | Study MBA at St. John’s university📚

In the new vlog, I will show you the first week of my MBA studies at St. John's University. I will take you on a tour around my college, and we will discuss the features of studying here, such as the mandatory course on Sexual Miscommunication Prevention. Finally, I will explain why I chose to come to NYC, the most expensive American city, rather than some cheaper town.

Hi Dari, Amazon will usually replace if the porch pirates take your package. For more expensive items, you can send the items to secure Amazon pick up station. Another option is that your landlord can enter into an agreement with Amazon that allows them to electrically buzz in to place packages in the mailroom where they are safer. I own several buildings in Chicago and I use this option because so many tenant deliveries were being stolen.

University of Nebraska Lincoln, nice friendly, and very inexpensive university city. 400,000 population so not overwhelmingly big for those that don't want a huge city. But big enough to have some of the same attractions. Campus is next to town center, lots of apartments around the campus and downtown focused on student housing. And there are a lot of different international dining options in the town, and quite a few shopping centers. Good hosptials. Again a nice clean safe city in a state and city with a very low cost of living, so great for students on a budget. And they have a decent sized international student body.

During the pandemic the number of packages delivered to apartments increased dramatically. Apartments became overwhelmed by the large number of packages and they had to tell delivery services to just drop packages at doors. Most people (like me) never had any packages stolen, so we just continued with door deliveries. If you do have packages stolen you can buy a post office box where packages can be left.

In the UK, Amazon can deliver to an Amazon Locker which might be outside a supermarket. You can access a locker 24/7. You can also get deliveries to some post offices, garages and shops. Amazon would inform you when your package had arrived at that shop.

I think the on-line course is a good idea mainly because foreign students come from so many backgrounds and from countries that may not all have the same understanding of the issues as those who grew up in the United States. It helps to put everyone on the same play ground!

I know it's probably still a bit crazy for you right now, but be prepared for the culture shock (and homesickness). You'll probably start feeling it a bit after about 2-3 months once you're settled in. But hang in there, it'll get better eventually. Luckily, you're at a school that has other students not from the USA, you can build a nice little support group to get you (and others) through those tough times. Cheers.

I had a Russian friend who attended graduate school in America. In Russia, she worked as an English translator, but she found it difficult to understand all of the school material in English. So, I was wondering if you have any problems understanding the course work and lectures because it is all in English.

Just let the professor know and he or she will cut you some slack. Also, very important to go to office hours with professors because they like the feedback and when you are making a huge transition like this and there are some language issues, they need to know that usually will be very understanding.@@DariStep

My son lived in Brooklyn, you cant leave your Amazon packages in front of your building it will get stolen. They have Amazon lock boxes all over town. Pick the nearest one to you and have them delivered there. You have 72 hours to pick the item up using a code that is sent to you in a text message.

Normally, I’d pass up NY because its expensive but after hearing your answer, I approve of your choice because your education is covered and your expenses are manageable. That’s the way you should live and you don’t want to face stress about taking care of yourself far from home in a new country! Labour Day is the American version of May Day in Europe, the holiday celebrates the struggles and achievement of workers. September 11, Patriots Day is a holiday that commemorates those who died in the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks on NY and Washington DC. The fall here is about the beginning of the school year, the end of summer and the idea of growing older. Thanks for your video update, best wishes for a successful semester and a good 2023 here in America! Take care and remain blessed.

Amazon is good about redelivering stole or lost items if you don't abuse it. I had 3 boxes went missing from our mail room. Amazon replaced all three boxes. Funny thing the day the replacements came the 3 missing items showed up so I had double. Amazon didn't want the extras back, it was too expensive to process the return.

Great video, Dari! 😀 When it comes to Amazon, it's a little different depending on locations. They used to leave the box right at my door and ring the doorbell, but they installed a Hub (similar to a post office), leave them there and send me a code to get my orders. It's odd that they have no secure place anywhere 🤔. And yes, I went to a university that was in a smaller city, where the events in town really focused on the campus, so it felt like the town and university were one big community. I go back often, and while it's changed a bit, it was so rewarding to spend my college years there.

It's a classic college town with a beautiful hilly campus, including a river in the middle of campus and walkable downtown. And yes lots of sports stadiums also like a 70,000 seat football stadium and 15,000 seat basketball arena. We have numerous other great college towns in the Midwest such as Madison, Wisconsin; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Bloomington, Indiana.

So much to say. So let me start off by saying that it's great to see your explorations around New York. Can't wait for you to share more of your impressions, especially aspects of American life that are very different from Russia...or other parts of the world you've visited. Labor Day is unofficially considered the last day of summer and the beginning of fall. There are different climate zones across the country so it might not necessarily feel that way depending on where you are. At any rate, it's often the last time to take a short vacation before school starts. It's also one of the summer holidays in which people celebrate with a barbecue. Would love it if you could visit a barbeque restaurant in NYC with some of your friends. Regarding your choice of universities...you made a GREAT choice. You mentioned several factors relating to the cost of the program (which St John's was fully covering)...fantastic! But I'm unsure whether you mentioned the quality of the university. Once you graduate, you'll absolutely want a degree from a university that people know and respect....and people know and respect the business school at St. John's. Regarding the sexual harassment program....I think it's a perfectly fine thing. I doubt you have time to do a tally, but it'd be interesting to compare responses between guys/gals. Regarding ordering from Amazon...I help procure tech products for a Fortune 500 company. And I order multiple products for different customers from Amazon every single day. FYI, getting reimbursed by Amazon for lost/missing items is a big hassle. So it's better to ship them to a nearby secure location where they can be picked up. When shipping to apartments I will send items to an Amazon Fresh grocery store OR an Amazon Locker, which allow my customers to retrieve them when they're ready. BTW, I received my undergraduate degree from UCLA which is in Los Angeles, CA (GO BRUINS!!!). It's one of the largest schools in the nation....had a lecture hall class with over 600 students! Also earned my masters degree from Pepperdine in Malibu, CA.

Regarding Amazon packages-- they are really good with returns regarding that. I had an issue where the package wasn't delivered / was lost or stolen, and their policy typically is: " did you ask your neighbors? not there? hm. wait to see if it shows up tomorrow, and if it doesn't, come back and ask for a refund " lol if you are nervous about theft though, you could have them deliver to a PO box instead :)

Dari, thank you so much for sharing a little more of your American adventures with us! That said, please focus on your studies and only take the time to produce videos when you really have free time. I want you to do well in school. I appreciate the added viewpoints of your fellow foreign classmates on various topics and their life in the U.S. Keep it up! It looks like you picked a quality university even if it wasn't hugely expensive compared to some that would put you thousands and thousands of dollars in debt. It's doubly awesome that your tuition is mostly covered and your professors are great to work with! You are a lucky girl! ☘ Amazon has security locker locations you can choose where you can have them deliver your packages. It helps with any porch pirates you might have in the neighborhood. The only issue is finding a way of transporting larger items from the locker to your apartment without having access to a car, truck, or SUV. This situation of no good options is what people sometimes call a "Catch-22" dilemma. I continue to wish you the absolute best for your travels and your future life. Have fun in the U.S.A.!! 😊💚

@1:58 We celebrate labor days with family and friends doing backyard BBQ, go to the park, river or lake and chill drinking beers, than later drive in movies. Something leisure and relaxing, something to de-stress..... Good luck Dari, i hope to see you in New York with your old friend Natasha and Alina in the future.

Delivery is a problem. Yes they leave stuff outside everywhere and things get stolen. Its a very bad system. Labor day is a big picnic, barbecue day or the last day of summer at the pools. Sorry about the food issues. Good idea to go to restaurants from other countries. Eating at home is cheaper. Hugs! 😘

Actually, the direction you turn a lock to open or close the door is not standardized in the US. I can be either way. Although most doors have the door knob on right when facing the door from outside and you usually turn the key clockwise to lock it, sometimes, it's opposite.

Labor Day is essentially America’s May Day. May Day’s origins are from the Haymarket Riot in Chicago in 1884 when labor unions were pressing nationwide for an 8-hour work week. In order to celebrate the labor movement, but avoid the celebration of May Day and the Haymarket incident, the federal government moved the holiday to September. Labor Day is typically considered the official end of summer. It’s actually tradition that some summer clothing (like seersucker) should not be worn after Labor Day.

Officially Labor Day is a National holiday given to honor US workers and the Labor Movement. Most people don't think about its true meaning and only consider it the last chance of the summer season to have picnics and partiies with friends and family. Some cities have parades to celebrate.

I went to Virginia Tech, Dari, and was a business finance major. VT is in Blacksburg, VA and basically the whole town is a university town both on and off campus. There were lots of big dormitories on campus and apartments off campus, definitely a student town. I loved it there, some of the most beautiful mountains scenery in the US. Glad you’re enjoying the urban vibe of NYC😊

I'm glad you're studying at a good university in New York. As a 77-year-old grandfather, I only wish that you gain useful knowledge and prosper in life. In the past, you could only go to Moscow, or in the GDR to study abroad from Budapest. Back then it was Bolshevism, today's world is more open. I studied here in Budapest, and the standard was high at our university. In my opinion, studying at home is more beneficial, but it is easier to acquire language skills abroad.

Labor Day is to commemorate workers in 19th and 20th century in USA. Big companies in steel, railroads, mining and textiles abused workers and even made children to work. Then labor unions were organized to protect workers. Many died in the process, but soon labor unions were strong. They gave them a liveable wage, hospitalization, vacations and a 40hr work week! Many conditions are better now due to unions. The AFL-CIO was instituted in 1952, it was originally started by Samuel Gomoers, who was a cigar manufacturer. Study hard. A campus map will show you where all the buildings are. Good luck!

@@DariStep nothing wrong with that unless you want to pursue a Ph D (doctorate). Typically, if you want to pursue a doctorate degree in the future after completing your Masters, then you want to do a thesis Masters degree. You can use the thesis you wrote in your Master's program as the basis and foundational work to write your dissertation for your doctorate. In most cases, though not necessarily all, you would pursue a doctorate if you are interested in becoming a professor at a university or doing research work. Personally, I have a Masters degree that is non thesis. A Masters, whether it be a thesis or non thesis, can get you a good pay increase in some professions. It certainly got me a good pay increase in mine.

Hey Dari, thanks for the updates! Glad everything is going great for you. With schooling, I would expect to see less video postings from you as you turn your focus on your Education! Keep those grades up! Anyway, your lucky your Amazon packages were not stolen. I can't remember, but I thought Amazon has pickup locations, were you go there and retrieve your stuff (Not sure if there is extra cost, but safer than it laying on the floor in the hall of a large apartment building). And since they take a picture of it delivered, I believe you would get stuck with paying for something that is not there. Also: There is a show on TV here called Man versus Food, where he takes on food challenges. Saw an episode where the host was in New York City and stopped by Patsy's Pizza (Oldest pizza place in NY). It reminded me of your first slice and thought, maybe you should drop in and get a slice! Hoping that someday, I'll get there and do the same (plus a ton more)! Question: When you were in Barcelona, it did not seem that there would be a place to top that. So, does NY fit the bill (I think the smile gives your answer away)? 😁😁
