Its insane, all the symptoms Luke was having were the moment Nell died, he woke up in shock at the same time as all the siblings. But then he began to get colder, and then his limbs became stiff like rigor mortis had set in, it's a twin thing.

Flanagan really understands the ways that fear and trauma can be windows into much deeper, more emotionally resonant stories. Unlike other horror stories, his stories always have such a tangible sense of empathy and care for the characters involved.

He loves poetic monologues a bit too much though. I would say that the tangible empathy you speak of is sort of the dividing line between those who love horror for "horror" vs those who don't mind his approach. His works don't really feel scary (nor do I think it's meant to be) despite the few jumpscares and "haunted" house. His works feel like beautiful tales with a nod to horror, rather than iliciting that classical horrific sense of fear. The lack of empathy. Like Pennywise from IT.
I love Luke talking about waiting for his mother to come home and each time he would see headlights he would think it was her, and then when the tall ghost with the hat turns into his mother, and then she opens her eyes and they're bright lights which turn into the headlights of the car with Steve pulling up.
Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Luke) should’ve got nominated for something for this performance, he’s really good

This episode is the hardest for me to watch. I have always been lucky in that my struggles with addiction have been light, but that's only because I grew up in a family that struggled even more than me and I learned by watching them and telling myself to never be like that. But I understand why my family is the way it is, and watching Luke run from reality because he feels so alone and powerless against it... I understand how easily that could have been me.

I love this show so much and I really love how people who hate horror have a love/hate relationship with it. The story is too good not to get sucked in, but it definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. There was less jump scares than I expected before watching (less, but definitely not none), but it keeps the tension at a boil so you can do it to yourself quite easily. All the kids have trauma and we have seen how most manifested it so far. Steve and Shirley both were hard to like for me. Especially Steve this ep. I have grown up with addicts so I understand the frustration and the necessary boundaries. You can't just breathe a sigh of relief because they are in rehab. You can keep boundaries without beating them into the ground though. That is just handing them their vice. Like I understood the wedding, even though I know some don't. Nell obviously wanted him there, but you almost always want them there. Even if you know it will be a disaster. Shirley wanted to protect her sister from being forced to make that choice, and I believe she was right to. That was a healthy boundary; you used, so you aren't allowed to come put stress on your sister's day. Picking on him and his friend while Luke is clean is just cruel. You can't just turn anger on and off and so I have a little sympathy, but then draw the boundary of "I love you, but I am still furious. I need more time before I see you. You are doing good. Keep going." Or something like that. That would involve healthy self reflection and communication though, and this family is too.much like mine for that. 😂
The hat guy freaks me out so much it is absolutely terrifying.
I keep telling myself to wait until you finish the series so I can binge them all at once., but as soon as I see the next Ep drop, here I am.
I've now incorporated "THIS IS BEHAVIOR" into my daily vocabulary, thank you

Thank you for watching hill house! It has become a halloween tradition for me to watch every episode! 👻🍬🎃
To support my recommendation for a _Lake Mungo (2008)_ reaction, I quote Mike Flanagan's recent review of it on Letterboxd: "Got to share this with friends last night, and it remains one of my all-time favorite films. Joel Anderson's chilling, devastating story about a family experiencing strange things after the death of their daughter is just at the top of its class. Presented as a documentary, LAKE MUNGO's terrors are quiet, subtle, and insidious. This movie always gives me gooseflesh up and down my arms as it builds its dread, and by the time we get to THAT shot (if you've seen it, you know exactly the one I mean) it becomes clear just how far into your mind and heart the movie has burrowed without you even realizing it. Just exceptional, terrifying, and ultimately heartbreaking. The movie will stick with you, and the more you think about its lonely, tragic implications, the more it will haunt you."

Lake Mungo is a masterpiece, the creators of that movie know how to unsettle a person.
I didn't want to say this earlier because I didn't want to be a spoiler, but by this point, you may have or should have realized that each episode has had a focus on each of the children (now grown up) in decending order starting with the oldest and telling each one's story of what they saw in Hill House and how it has effected them in their lives, and how each story is overlapping with the others. I absolutely think this show was a true masterpiece. You feel creeped out, scared, but you care about all of them and even those with less likable personalities, you understand how each becomes the person they become.
Really enjoying your viewing of this series! The floating man with the cane always freaked me out. This is an excellent series that conveys a sense of horror by pairing it with the familial relations. That's the path to true horror.
I see Kat is noticing the ghosts in the background. They're everywhere lol Fun to catch on a rewatch
Luke breaks my heart everytime i watch this show. Even teared up a few times while watching this reaction.
Mike Flanagan is such an amazing story teller, his works are not only horrific but profound

Absolutely. I'm so happy he's going to be directing the next Exorcist movie. And he's the producer for Chris Stuckman's first horror movie, so i have high hopes for that one too.
This show can be very hard to watch at times, but the pay-off is worth it, as the pieces fall into place toward the end you'll see the true genius of this series.
Luke's probably my favorite character
I think it's easy to hate on Steve if you've never had an addict sibling. But as someone who has, Steve's behavior is totally understandable for someone who has reached the end of their rope. It's incredibly hard having an addict sibling. Loving someone so much who is willing to hurt you and betray you in crazy ways to get their next fix. and you know that's not the REAL them, but it is them at the same time. You love them so much but there comes a point where you really do have to have limits and put up walls to protect yourself from them. There are other reasons to hate on Steve, which I won't get into in case someone reading this hasn't watched the whole series yet, but his behavior when it comes to Luke is simply not one of those reasons. He deserves more empathy in my opinion. As does Luke. But I feel like people don't really give Steve any when it comes to what Luke has put him and their family through.

I get so frustrated when people miss this about the rest of the family and the way they treat Luke. The audience knows that this time Luke isn't lying about being high or needing money to help a friend detox, but Steve doesn't. It's just another in a long line of painful disappointments. We saw how supportive everyone was at the first rehab, so it's meant to contrast with how they treat him after multiple betrayals of trust.
Unpopular opinion but I love Steve. I feel like it's really easy for us as viewers to know what we know and think he's just an asshole, but Luke said it took him ten years to get clean for even 90 days, and it was Steve and Shirl paying for his rehab. Not to mention how many times Luke admitted that he had stolen from Steve and otherwise let his family down. Plus, he was right about Joey in the end. She did exactly what Steve thought she would do. He's definitely not the most compassionate person, that's for SURE, but I can understand why he thinks the way he thinks and feels the way he feels. I won't say more because this is only episode 4 lol. Love your reactions to this series btw, especially when you are screaming PLEASE but also ready to punch someone :P
0:59 not a minute in, and a sunny day scene with a grass lawn stokes fear prompting Kat to question the choices she's made, like reacting to Haunting Hill House. You know I've also been thinking...the jump scares just happen unexpectedly which is why they're so effective and the story involvement puts that on the back burner like I don't have the usual amped up horror house fight or flight tactics or strategy. It just has that quality of I dunno hauntedness even when things scare suddenly. I hope that comes through. It's definitely not an "outsmart an axe murder/gross monster in the hallway hijinks" kinda series/movie! (Which is fun and scary too in its own kinda way) And that's why the occasional scares work so well! I hope that kinda helps to set the tone as the series goes along.
It's like spicy food which forces you to slow down while being painful and delicious, the series is scary enough that you need to unwind between sessions, but it does so well to draw you to keep going.
The third episode is one of my favorites because to me it is one of the most scary ones but I liked this one too. This one was all about Luke which was nice to see and I do like that actor as well. The reason this show goes so heavily into addiction and alchohol is because the creator and director Mike flannigan himself was once an addict with both drugs and drinking as well but he was able to kick it eventually which is always good. The actress of Theo is his real life wife and they have two or three kids now. thier eldest daughter's name is Theo because the actress was pregnent when she did this show so Katey decided to call their daughter by her character's name haha. Grate reaction Kat I love this show it is one of Mike's best shows he has done.
Others have probably already said this, but: You should watch _The Haunting_ (1963) - it's actually based on Shirley Jackson's book, while this series is only somewhat inspired by the book....
All our guilts from the past follow us like “ghosts”
I am so pleased you are enjoying this one, Kat! This is one of my favorites to re-watch. The next episode will blow your mind & I can't wait to see you react!
I come to this channel for the Kat air punches as much as for the horror content. 😆
"I'm going to be fine. This is-NO PLEASE!!!" had me laughing so hard I had to pause it. So many good moments of full body goosebumps in this show.
I have echolalia every time I hear her say "talented," too. It's great!
I love Joey's explanation about getting through addiction and intrusive or compulsive thoughts. It's one day at a time, one craving at a time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Just because you slip doesn't mean you stop trying.
This made me want to rewatch the series for like the 5th or 6th time. Love seeing anybody discover Flanagan for the first time. Please check out Midnight Mass next, Kat!

Just to clear up an inaccuracy in this episode: there are no such things as LSD junkies. LSD is not an addictive drug, and won't make you jab out your eyes. That's more akin to deliriants like PCP. I think Flanagan wanted to have the idea of a man stuck with a horrible vision, but knew that smack doesn't make you hallucinate, so he kind of strayed off of the facts for dramatic purposes.
