To add some context about the start of the film, it's set during the Battle of Britain during WWII, during which the German Luftwaffe (Air force) carried out the bombing of British cities in an attempt to destroy British morale and make them surrender. "Operation Pied Piper" was the plan carried out by the British government that saw the evacuation of 1.5 million people - mostly children - to areas deemed less at risk from aerial bombing or invasion. Mostly, this meant to the countryside, sometimes relatives but for many, complete strangers who opened up their homes for the displaced. Some were also sent overseas, with over 7,000 sent to Canada. And yes, their father is in the military: most adult men who were capable would have either volunteered or been drafted into the military during the War, as it was a total war; everyone had a part to play. Peter looks at the soldiers at the railway station because he is nearing adulthood himself, and is feeling the responsibility to contribute to the war effort as a man.

Something from the book I sooo wish they had included in the movie was a bit of dialogue between Mr. Beaver and Peter, Susan, and Lucy. After Edmund leaves them, Mr. Beaver explains he knew he would, because he knew from the moment he saw Edmund's eyes he'd eaten the witch's food. From what I remember, there was also some narration after Edmund met the White Witch that explained the Turkish Delight he ate was enchanted, and anyone who'd tasted it would go on eating it and eating it until they'd killed themselves if they weren't stopped. That's why Edmund was drawn back to the witch and kept asking for Turkish Delight. She'd made him a magical meth-head. Also, Edmund probably first asked for Turkish Delight when he was in her sleigh because with the war and all, sugar was strictly rationed and he probably hadn't had candy since he was little.

Thank you @Drummergirl - I can tell you have read the book as you stated a few things that were not included in the film. @Jon Of course it is overlooked - the book gives more insight - anyone watching the film for the first time - would not assume that the Turkish delights were cursed.

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. I wonder if they left it out because they thought themes of addiction were too grown up for a kids movie. A lot of fantasy movies were getting boycotted by American evangelicals at the time, so I think they went out of their way not to lose that audience for this particular film (this movie was a big factor in the AFA ending a 9 year boycott of Disney). I remember that the band Evanescence was originally supposed to do a song for this movie (the song is titled "Together Again" if you're interested), but they changed directions and went with Christian musicians instead.

Thinking about this, I wanted to come back and clarify that my comment wasn't meant to be a criticism in any way--of course something left out gets overlooked, and since I'm often impressed by how perceptive you are in your reactions, I really hope that I didn't offend you or give the wrong idea.

I love your reaction to this. I love that you talked about the comparisons between this story and the bible. I heard the author purposely wrote it this way. Many ppl react to this and never talk about that aspect. It is beautiful and this story makes it very easy to understand the bible. Had someone explained this when I was a child watching this, my mind would've been blown lol.

CS Lewis wrote it as an allegory. Aslan is Jesus, nothing hidden, veiled or distorted.

From what I read of C.S. Lewis' letters, it was an accidental allegory. He started writing the story, and it just sort of turned out that way, and he looked back on it and went oops, guess I wrote a parable! It tends to just bleed through when there are Christian authors.

Always makes me tear up that in the books, Aslan asks Lucy and Susan to hold his mane and walk with him as he goes to the stone table because he’s scared. Even though he’s this great leader, wise and kind, written to literally be symbolic of God, he’s afraid as he walks to his execution

While only 3 movies were made, there are actually 7 books which are very much worth reading. Chronologically, this is the second one in the storyline though first in release order. The magician's nephew is a prequel where you learn the back story of where the witch came from, why there is a lamppost, more about the uncle, and the origin of Narnia.

Yes, if you were wondering, Aslan is literally Jesus (within the canon of the series, of course), so I'm glad you caught on. I will note when people say that J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis were friends, some people assume a bit too much. Yes, they were close at a time and neither Narnia or LOTR would exist without both of them (it took Tolkien fifteen years to write The Lord of the Rings and throughout much of the time, Lewis was the only one who encouraged him, and, on the flip side, Lewis would never have reverted to Christianity if it weren't for Tolkien most likely, and if Lewis were not Christian, Aslan and therefore Narnia would never be invented). However, they had some disagreements, in spite of their friendship. Lewis, according to Tolkien, did not particularly like hobbits, and Tolkien was not a huge fan of the apparently sloppy world building of Narnia (that is, throwing in Father Christmas and mixing mythologies-but then again, Tolkien was the man who meticulously plotted out the phases of the moon for every step of his journey, so you might understand that). The Professor was actually inspired by Tolkien (as was the protagonist in Lewis' Space Trilogy) while Treebeard was inspired by Lewis.

The line the professor said "he's either mad (crazy), a liar, or telling the truth" is a line from one of the books C.S. Lewis wrote about his conversion to Christianity called "Mere Christianity". His argument was Jesus was either mad (crazy) for believing He was the Son of God, or He was a liar for claiming it when He knew it wasn't true, or He was telling the truth. Pretty cool that they used that line!

The old man they went to stay with, the one who owns the wardrobe... It's the same actor who plays Professor Horace Slughorn in Harry Potter!

When I 1st read the Narnia books, and Tolkien’s Hobbit & LotR in the sixties, Harry Potter hadn’t been written, but then I wasn’t aware of much of the mythologies Tolkien & Lewis were leaning on.

@@billfilios2677 I remember first reading the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in the 60s in Primary school. I read fairy stories and mythology lots. Old Scottish ones especially. I remember wagging a double latin to finish Lord of the Rings.I remember then reading the predecessor of both Tolkein and Lewis, George McDonald. Phantastes and Lilith are even more black and white and probably lean heavier into religious allegory. I'm in the camp that notices everything that Harry Potter borrowed and not the other way around. Having said that I can see the freshness in HP and why it is loved too.

One of the things I liked most when I read the first Harry Potter book when it was released, when I was in my 30s, was that it reminded me of the books I loved reading as a kid. Namely the Narnia series.

I especially loved your reaction when your brain connected the dots and you actually realized that Aslan the Highly mentioned King of Narnia was actually a lion. I also loved the loving and psychological analysis you gave about Edmund, of why he behaved the way he did. Most people immediately despise him when they get to watch this movie. The similarities you saw and pointed out of Biblical events in the movie are spot on accurate because the author of the Narnian series(C.S. Lewis) actually based all the Narnian books on biblical events and truth to get Children to fall inlove with Jesus through the Character of Aslan❤

Lucy is faith, no one believes her or hear what she says, but she always believe in Aslan (you'll see more of this side of her character in the second movie). Edmund is the sinner, the one that even with the calling to be a King, chooses to betrayal his family and everyone else to satisfy his own ego (not just with the sweeties, he also falled to the lies of the Witch that he would become King after her). Susan it's that person who it's logical all the time. She is always trying to be the thinker one and act smart, but like in the scene where she and Lucy are practicing, she needs to abandon her way of thinking and just believe in it so she will never miss an arrow. Peter is the just one, he tries to protect his family, and gives his life to them because he know it's his responsibility to do so as the older brother. He also fails, but because of the wellness of others he keeps walking on the path that Aslam gave him: to be the King. And because he followed and trusted this path, he became the Magnificent.

As a child Digory and Polly first visited Narnia by use of the magic rings. Digory's Uncle Andrew made sets of rings that allowed their wearers to travel to other worlds (of completely different universes) by first passing through the Wood Between the Worlds. They had awoken a woman known as Jadis and the three travelled to earth, where the woman became weaker and uglier. She committed many crimes and manipulated the children until one used their magical ring to transport them and others to an unknown world. They were met with the singing of a lion that created life and the woman was disturbed by the life blooming and threw a lantern at the lion not affecting him. However this lantern turned into a lamp post that grew like a tree. Jadis was the first evil to step into this new world known as Narnia. Then Asian grew a tree with fruit and the woman ate it greedily but it was meant for her to eat by the lion which gave her immortality where she’ll never know peace and only misery. She then retreated to another land For 900 years she waited for the prophecy of a great battle to occur in narnia and when the tree died she returned to narnia and named herself queen then came a winter that lasted for 100 years then suddenly she met the first human which was ending this woman was the white witch

Great video. Haven't watched this movie in years. Always liked it. The Professor's story is told in the Prequel novel The Magician's Nephew. He was there when Narnia was created, it also explains the origin of the lamppost, the witch and the wardrobe.

You putting together and getting excited over the parallels to the Gospel were amazing. 💖 Not gonna lie, these books played a big part in helping me understand such things as death and eternity and Revelations when I was little.

I feel so sorry for siblings that don't get on. My sister and I are the only siblings and my whole life when she is happy, I'm happy and content. If she is unhappy or in trouble, my life is in turmoil until she's ok again. There are times when she drives me crazy but that's because I'm the sensible one lol! I think having a brother or a sister is an incredibly special bond and I feel fortunate to have one.

The author of the book actually wanted to tell the gospel to children and he came out with this story, so that is why there is a lot of Christian things in it. And I understand about the sibling blessing. Me and my little brother are a couple years apart and are very tight and he is such a huge blessing to me. I love him so much.

Time moves differently between the two worlds.

The professor isn't related to the children. Children were sent basically to strangers. During the WW2 from the cities believing it was safety for them. Some children had family outside but alot did not.

Funny you should say that it gives you Harry Potter vibes, there is a fan theory that the pevensies are the same as the founders of the Hogwarts houses, Peter is gryffindor, Susan is ravenclaw, Lucy is hufflepuff and Edmund is slytherin.

YES recognized him

In WWII, families all over rural England volunteered to take in children from London and the surrounding areas that were hardest hit by German bombers. My greatest terror as a mother would not being able to locate them again but, apparently, the tags had their information on who they were and where they were going and where they were from.

J. K Rowling did say that she was heavily inspired by Narnia & it's Characters when she wrote Harry Potter. That's why it gives that vibe.

The Cronicles Of Narnia is written by C.S. Lewis. He was a close friend with J.R.R. Tolkien who wrote LOTR. This is the second book. The first is kind of a Narn'ish creation story.

That's actually a matter of some debate. The Magician's Nephew comes first chronologically, but this was the first book written. That's why, depending on which edition you get, the books will be numbered differently. Personally, I prefer the written order, but I guess it doesn't make much of a difference.

I think I would point people to read it in the published order too. You appreciate The Magician's Nephew a lot more if you'd read The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe first because you see how everything fits together. But I also agree with you that it's not too big of a deal either way.

The soldier the camera focuses on at the train station is Jaxin Hall, the runner-up for the role of Peter. Children shipped out of London didn't always know anyone where they were going, just as the Pevensie kids don't know Professor Kirke. When they traveled, the children wore labels with their names and destinations, so they would arrive safely. Everyone carried gas masks wherever they went. Camphor is used mostly against moths, as I recall. These books were written at a time before advent of 'helicopter parenting'. Parents trusted their children to be where they said they were going to be, and to come home when called, or in time for dinner. Edmund's going back for his father's picture is understandable, but dangerous and foolhardy. This was during the Blitz, and doing so could have cost him his life, and that of anyone who went back after him, had a bomb landed on their house at just the wrong moment. Aslan is the Turkish word for 'lion', and was chosen deliberately by C.S. Lewis, the author of the books. The lion is often referred to as 'the king of the jungle'. If I recall correctly, it was the music Mr. Tumnus played on his pipes that caused Lucy to drowse. Aslan even looks a little like Liam Neeson, who provides his voice. It's been a long time since I read the books, but the eagles, etc. dropping rocks on the Witch's army is an apt corollary to the air raid at the beginning of the film. C.S. Lewis was a Christian theologian, hence the Biblical references throughout the books. He never gets preachy, though, leaving it up to the reader to catch the references or not Among his other works are 'Mere Christianity' and 'The Screwtape Letters'. By the way, keep in mind the mice that chewed away the ropes binding Aslan... I've known the Narnia books since I was 11 years old, well more than half a century ago. To see your reactions as you discover the films, with no prior knowledge, is a delight. I hope you will enjoy the rest of the journey.

I'm so glad you enjoyed this! When I was a young teenager, I was in a local theatre company for teens. We performed a play version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It was an amazing experience, and it helped me get through those difficult years growing up.

I love that when Aslan is giving them all their new names and says "Edmund The Just". He was the one who seemed to fall so far away and mess up the most, but it just goes to show no matter what you did in the past, when you repent and put your faith in what Jesus did for you, your a new person and are justified in God's sight. "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" Romans 5:1

There is another series of Narnia Movies besides this one, made by BBC. They didn't have the same budget and the technology hadn't progressed to this point, but they stayed very true to the books and got one movie further done. Also, The Silver Chair, which was the one that hasn't been remade is my favorite in that series and it would be great if you could tack it on after this "trilogy" is finished. Also, Focus on the Family made excellent readers theater recordings of all seven books that are very much worth listening to. My favorite story, The Horse and His Boy, unfortunately has never been made into a movie even though I always thought it was the most cinematic of them all.

i’m an only child and i never really wanted a sibling, never recognized my lack. hearing your thoughts about your sister at the end really touched me. i’m so glad for you that you have her. she is stunning 💛 God bless you both.

The children might not have known the professor at all. When the nazis were bombing England during the blitz, the people of England organized a mass deportation of the children of large cities in the south, to places in the countryside. This was to save their lives, and Englands future generations. C.S. Lewis also was called on to give people hope by the government in the war. He was asked to speak to the people about Jesus on a series of radio shows. His book, ‘Mere Christianity’ is a written record of those recordings.

C.S. Lewis was Tolkien's best friend and fundamental in Lewis convertion. It's a very christian based story, the books are fantastic. Thank you, Kemi. Can i Hope "It's a Wonderful Life (1946)" will be included for Christmas?

please check out Black Swan. It's a very beautiful yet also tragic movie. Natalie Portman plays a troubled ballerina who strives for perfection, and the movie shows how it slowly breaks her. I think it's a movie everybody should watch once in their life time.

There are 7 books 😁 you can get them in an anthology bound together one giant book. C.S.Lewis was said to have written these stories because he felt children at the time, weren't being taught proper etiquette, social standards, or logic. Values taught within religious contexts without a child realizing they are being taught. The Sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve are not in every book, all of the books are INCREADIBLE. Interesting, sad,funny, so happy you liked this one, I hope to find you've read the books someday.

In Greek mythology a faun is half man half goat. The most famous on was Pan who played a flute. The one Thomas was playing by the fire is called a Pan flute.

I had a feeling you were going to enjoy this one. The symbolism in it always gets me teary You are blessed having that kind of relationship with your sis. I had to step away from mine because I got tired of me being always the one to reach out to her. Even working 2 miles from my home in 2 years not once did she ever stop by. It's just hurtful. And you might say, you could have invited her. At this point I was just done, I had to let it go for my own sake. Its just a long list of stuff. I'm just glad that my mom has been gone and isn't here to witness it. Sorry for the vent. Love your sis, I'm so glad that you guys have that strong deep bond

I have a similar issue with my sister. I don't have a car but she does and I'm always the one to jump on the train, then a ferry, then a bus to see her. We both live in NY. She has a car and for her it is only a 20 minute drive away, but she never visits unless I nag her about it. I'm always the one to reach out, or to call her, or to make plans to hang out and most of the time she'll cancel with some excuse like, She's tired, or forgot we had plans or got caught up watching a show. We used to be very close and I considered her my best friend. However over the years there are other issues that have developed, which recently made me keep my distance for my own mental and emotional health. If she ever needed me, or needed grocieries or anything important, I would drop everything to be there for her, but I realized I'm better loving her from far away.

@@astrogothiqa wow, that sounds a lot like me. I lost my car in 2021 and knowing this, I never got a "hey, let's just go somewhere to get u out the house". Her words were, well if u need anything, let me know. With that hesitation like please don't. I'm sure u know what I mean. I live alone and she's married, and when my mom was alive I got mad at my mom bcs she said sisters should be close. I told my mom, u know ma its gets really tiring to be the one to always call, who has to go to her house, to check in. The phone works both ways and her car has gas too. I felt bad after, but my mom just didn't comprehend the way it is/was.

The soundtrack for this movie is amazing!

Interesting that you questioned why Father Christmas wasn't dressed in red. Ironically, that is a very westernized/'modern' creation of Santa. The more German/Scandinavian variation that these books more likely are based on are more of a woodland spirit and are better represented by what you saw in the movie.

I know how you feel about your sister. I am a middle child and my younger sister is my best friend. We get along so well and very rarely fight or argue. I love her so much, and my older brother despite the fact that we don't see him as often anymore because of COVID.

My mother used to read the Chronicles of Narnia books to us when we were children. When she finished the last book (there are 7) and explained that it was really all about Jesus, she asked if we wanted to ask Jesus in our hearts. All three of us said yes! These books will forever have a special place in my heart. I was thrilled when they made 3 of them into movies. I hope and pray that they make just as big an impact on all who read them or watch the movies! Blessings to you all!

You know, Father Christmas existed far before the Coca Cola version came to be.

In the BBC version, when Aslan explained the fine print, Lucy said “I see. We cried our eyes out, but you know all along it would be all right.” Aslan replied “Well, I knew of the old inscription…but it had never been out to the test.”

This is one of the first books I bought (from the bookmobile) when I was little. Along with A Wrinkle in Time & Bunnicula.

Not all of the children sent out from London went to family or distant relatives. Some were sent to complete strangers and were used as cheap labor. Not all of the children's stories had happy endings.

One of the first books I read as a child. Such a great story and these actors were perfect for it. Thanks for a great reaction.

Edmund unfortunately had a lot of selfish and spiteful tendencies, and he didn't want to admit that Lucy was right though he did mean to try and bring them all like the "Queen" told him to. He was genuinely surprised when Peter and Susan got angry with him. Later he convinced himself that the "Queen's" side was the right side because the Turkish delight she gave him was enchanted so that it was so addictive that if you eat it you could go on eating it until it kills you, and also because he figured "the ones saying the nasty things about her are her enemies, most of it probably isn't true. She's been nice to me anyhow, nicer than they are."

The main four kind of remind me of the hogwarts founders. Peter-Gryffindor. Susan-Ravenclaw. Edmund-Slytherin. Lucy-Hufflepuff💛

The author of Harry Potter based the founders of hogwarts on the four Pevensie children.

One of my favorite details upon watching as an adult who has a better understanding of Christianity, is Aslan always claimed the killing of the White Witch as Peter's victory. The bible says in Psalms that God brings back the head of our enemy and calls it our victory.

I wish the books would be made into live-action TV series....the professor had been witness to the creation of Narnia....and had taken a seed from a magical apple from Narnia....that seed grew into a tree, and that tree was later used to create the wardrobe.....and the professor's name is Digory.

There is a whole series of books of Narnia. This one wasn't the first, although it is arguably the most well known.

Awwww Hallelujah! I just love this story. Cause the writer, CS Lewis patterned this on his childhood experience and in the Bible so kids would understand the meaning of words such as Sacrifice, Salvation, Redemption, Repentance, Atonement, Unconditional Love and Mercy.. But if you are really to study it.. there is more hidden messages to this. Deeper for adult christians.

Glad you got a chance to watch this amazing movie! One of my favorites! JR Tolkien was best friends with CS Lewis. He inspired him to write these books as well as convert to Christianity. The next movie Prince Caspian is also really good and Susan gets to do more with her bow and arrow. Liam Neeson is the voice of Aslan. Take Good Care! My mom and I love your channel! What is missed in the film about Edmund is that Peter was much, MUCH harder on Edmund and the food and drink the Witch gave him influenced his mind. He was not controlled, but the events shaped his perceptions and decisions. Peter was going about acting like their father and he was always on Edmund about everything. I would like to recommend the film Windwalker with Trevor Howard it was made in 1981(I specify that because there are several other movies with similar or identical names). Windwalker is a Native American film about a Cheyenne family and it is absolutely amazing. Except for flashbacks and internal monologue the whole film is spoken in traditional Cheyenne and Crow native language.

The Space Trilogy, as it's called by C.S. Lewis is a wonderful read. The second book Perelandra is amazing. Mere Christianity, and The Screwtape Letters are His most notable works. Both Great.

Apparently the pub of The Eagle and Child in Oxford, famous for where Tolkien and Lewis liked to hang out together, is closed because it’s currently being outfitted as a bed and breakfast. I’m all over that!!! What better place to take your laptop and do some writing of your own?

Fauns (as was their roman name, the greeks called them satyrs and made them a bit more mischievous) were half goat and half man rather than half horse like centaurs. Whether you meet a faun or a satyr though (and I guess like with people it depends on their individual personalities) some recommend that you stay a little wary of them. And with centaurs you need to always mind you manners with them - some are known for their wildness, some are known for their wisdom, but either way best to use your best manners with them and to never assume that you can pet them or ride them, they're very proud.

C.S. Lewis (the author) was a famous Christian apologist (and a great friend of Tolkien). This entire movie is indeed a Christian fairy tale, and Aslan is indeed a symbol of Christ. Read Lewis' Great Divorce, it's short and very thought-provoking.

CS Lewis wrote another fantasy book (apart from the Narnia series) called the Great Divorce.I mention it because I'm sure they will never make it into a movie or TV show so the only way to experience it is to read the book (it's not very long) or listen to the audio book. Highly recommend - it's about the final 'divorce' between good and evil.

Oh, I’m so excited that you’re reacting to the Narnia trilogy!! The themes are so beautiful, and I adore the sibling dynamics and the love present between all of them. Part one: So I have not finished reading the Narnia books but I've gotten to book 6 and watched all 3 movies. There are 7 books in total. Book one: The Magician's Nephew, tells us of the origins of narnia, where Jadis came from, who Aslan is, why there was an eternal winter, where the lamppost came from, and how the wardrobe came to be. Book two: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, tells us this story and explains further about the war, each character's motives, how time works, and a bit of Narnian history. Book Three: The horse and his boy is my personal favorite. It expands the world of Narnia and fully takes place in this world during the time our four Kings and Queens are living and ruling Narnia. It was never made into a movie. Book Four: Prince Caspian is the second movie and my least favorite of the movies. It brings back Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter to help a young prince bring peace back to Narnia after it fell. I don't have good memory of book five: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, but I do remember laughing a lot and enjoying it.

Part two: I hope that if they could remake the books into movies including the ones that weren't done, using a better structured cast and script. Seeing as we bounce around with the ages of our main characters in the series, I think there needs to be 2 separate casts. One with the kids this age, and another for the age they're in at the end of TLtWatW along with the Horse and his boy cast. It would also be great if the others were more loyal to the books because Prince Caspain and the Voyage dissapointed me. Honestly, it's a really great series to read and I'm waiting excited to restart the series.

Rowling herself has admitted that Narnia was one of her favorite series growing up. In fact, the personalities of the four Pevensie children map perfectly onto the four founders of Hogwarts. J.R.R Tolkien & C.S. Lewis went to Oxford together. They're Mother's instilled in them Christianity. They're of spiritual symbolism throughout the movie. Aslan symbolizes Jesus. It's like in The Lord Of The Rings, the one ring symbolizes sin.
