First time watching Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End movie reaction

Ойын-сауық

Badd Medicine here and its Pirates of the Caribbean reaction time! Another really, really good movie here. The story was pretty darn good. That ending with Will Turner riding in like that was epic. Of course Jack Sparrow is great in this. Elizabeth Swann's arc was great and Namoi Harris was great too! Again these Pirate movies are a lot of fun.
Plot:
Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) join forces with Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) to free Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from Davy Jones' locker. Meanwhile, the crew of the Flying Dutchman ghost ship wreaks havoc on the Seven Seas. The friends must navigate dangerous waters to confront Chinese pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat) and, ultimately, they must choose sides in a battle wherein the pirate life hangs in the balance.

Her character irked me the most. It felt like her main character status got her anything and everything she wanted rather than her earning her spot as a main character through what she accomplished. She’s this Disney Princess type who waltzes into the pirate world and is handed the keys to the town and treated like the most respected pirate in the world.

The reason why the dutchman’s crew looks like sea creatures is because they were cursed as punishment for abandoning their job/true purpose. They turned back to normal because they had a new captain and would stay that way given that Will Turner will do his job as the captain of the Flying Dutchman. As for what their job/ true purpose is, it was explained by Tia Dalma earlier in the movie right before they saw Elizabeth’s father in the sea.

The irony of this original trilogy is that Jack starts and ends the series in the exact same situation: in a dinghy, without a ship or crew, out on his own. But the circumstances feel so incredibly different that hardly anyone notices the parallels. The reality is, Jack's circumstances haven't changed, HE has changed. He's no longer as bitter, desperate, and cynical as he was in in the first movie, where he cares only about himself and his ship/freedom. He learns what he values and what he's living for. Jack's entire arc can be encapsulated by the beautiful conversation he has with his father: "It's not just about living forever, Jackie. The trick is living with yourself forever." This is by far my favorite Pirates movie. A lot of people (especially reactors) don't like it as much as the first two because it can feel like A LOT, especially on a first viewing, and I imagine this is extra true if you're also trying to react to it. The trick with truly appreciating this movie is not to get bogged down by the epic scale and world-building, but to understand that the plot is entirely driven by characters, not events. Each character has a distinct motivation, and those motivations affect events, instead of the other way around. The incredible character development in the first three Pirates movies, which peaks in this one with Jack's choice to save Will, makes it my personal favorite. I get chills ever time we see Jack crouched next to Will, holding his hand around the blade. Also, so many fun tie ins to the first one here. My personal two favorites: the sword Will makes in 1 is the sword that kills him in 3. Elizabeth introduces herself to Barbossa as "Turner" in 1, and Barbossa's final words to her in 3 are to call her "Mrs. Turner".

Well said. Very good point about it being character driven. From beginning to end the film is driven by characters acting on motivations that were established in the previous films. And each character largely acts within their established character, meaning they don’t do things just to move the plot along. That’s a huge credit to this film because you can’t say that about every film of this scale. It’s not a perfect film or story, but I think it’s a very fitting end to the story told in the first three installments of the Pirates franchise.

@@itsbonniefay2417 Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed reading it! These films are super cool because they are feel-good comical adventure films and I think it's absolutely fine to enjoy only that part (I certainly love those aspects as well) but I also think there's a depth to them that is often overlooked because they've got the label of "wacky fun action movie". I think these movies (particularly the original trilogy) are super cool because you can just watch them to have a good time, but you can also watch them for the depth and character development. And that's a tough line for a film to walk :)

@@Tink7200 Absolutely agree. Also, in response to this part of your comment: "And each character largely acts within their established character, meaning they don't do things just to move the plot along." You know what show this movie reminds me of a lot, for this exact reason? Prepare yourself because this is gonna be a weird comparison and I'm going to have to write an essay to explain myself, but: Arcane. I know, I know, they couldn't be more different. But I think they both have that same core of, 'these are the characters, they will do what they will based on who they are, and we will follow the story of the results of those actions, rather than making them act to fit the plot'. Arcane very much feels like it's building up to a war between Piltover and the Undercity the whole season. That "should have" (if we follow typical story design) been the climax of the season. In many ways, that plot is never paid off (at least not in season 1) and you could expect the season to leave you feeling unfulfilled because of that. But you don't, because the show isn't following a specific plot, it's following the characters. The climax comes from the completion of Jinx's character development (at least in season 1) instead of the plot. In a weird way, I feel this is also the case in Pirates 3. I think it's harder to see because in Pirates 3 we do get the big final action set piece (they are, after all, still comedy action adventures) but for me the real climax is the completion of Jack's character arc: his choice to save Will. Anyone who got this far, was anyone expecting a Jinx/Jack Sparrow comparison in these comments? :P

The only difference seems to be that if she is is the one to initiate the kiss, the man's ultimate fate is longer in coming than the ones who lean down and kiss her who get killed right away. Sao Feng tried to force it, so he got killed IMMEDIATELY. James did it without asking, but she didn't push him off, so he lived a little bit longer after the kiss than Sao Feng did. Jack died within minutes of their first kiss (last movie). Poor Will made it the longest, but the marriage kiss this time seems have to sealed his doom since he got killed shortly after. Is it any wonder Jack warded her off at the end claiming "once was enough" when she tried to kiss him again? 🏴‍☠😆

Cool little factoid : In the beginning, when the prisoners sing, the song itself is an SOS type call, that the pirate way is in danger and the Pirate Lords need to convene immediately. This song makes each “ Nine piece of Eight “ hum, which is why when Barbossa tossed the coin to Sao Feng, he pulled it straight to his ear to determine the truth Funnily enough, the song is about Davy Jones and the First Bretheren Court, and how, after Davy Jones was heartbroken, worked with the other Pirate Lords to bind and entrap Calypso in human form, forever surrendering the power of the Seas to Man. “ The King and his men, took the Queen from her bed, and bound her in her bones”

Elizabeth didn't know that Will saw her kiss Jack at the end of the last movie. She probably withdrew from everyone after killing Jack, because she felt terribly guilty, and I bet she didn't realize that Will had withdrawn from her too. So naturally she wouldn't necessarily mention the life-ending kiss, but Will didn't know how to ask about Jack, and the whole thing was a mess.

I think that Will and Elizabeth's wedding was the first film wedding I ever watched at a cinema, I was 10yo. nothing has toped that. can you even imagine? being a little girl and that is the first big film wedding you see? and I admired Elizabeth so much, still do. It was awesome to have a female role model like her at that age. she could fight, she made her own decisions and the men around her respected them, she was made a pirate captain and then Pirate King and nobody questioned it, and the best part is that I was young enough to think that was the norm, I didn't think it was weird or a subversion of the trope. and her outfits! all of them. also, can we appreciate how the special effects and the cgi still hold up today? and the score. The. Score. and honestly, there is a reason why people consider pirates a trilogy, the others aren't quite as good as the first three. I've been in love with these movies (the trilogy) since the beginning, I keep coming back to them often. I don't know what it is, the nostalgia, the story, the characters, the vibe, the visuals.

The feeling you had watching them going to the edge with the night sky, watching calypso grow to the size of a ship, and the battle in the monsoon will be something I will never forget. Thanks for your reactions!

What I love the most about this movie is the deep, dark vibe it gives while watching, probably that's why it is by far my fav of the franchise. In the beginning, we see the pirates being hanged (including the child) and them making the call by _hoist the colors_ for the Brethern Court to gather in Shipwreck Cove. Even the pirates have a code (the one written by Morgan and Bartholomew) and even they _care_ when the song is sung because it means that they are in such moments of despair and darkness. In the first movie, while Jack enters Port Royal, we see the pirates hanged as a warning to the others; in this movie, they actually make us watch it (the opening scene and the scene where Captain Teague shows Jack his mother). Even if this is a fictional world; it kinda shows us this discrimination, oppression and persecution over the differentiated (pirates in this case). And that even the pirates have a sense of union when it matters. It's never mentioned in the movies but the reason why Beckett branded Jack is that he freed a ship from the East Indian Trading Company navy ( _because the company forced the crew into slavery, he stopped following orders and chose to save the crew_ ). which is also why Davy Jones says that Jack's soul is equal to 100 souls, that is the number of people he saved from the Company. There is also a cut scene from the first movie, where we see Jack shows Elizabeth his marks (like P he has on his arm) and his war wounds. In the movies, it is always in subtext; but we see that the free people of the seas suffered a lot because of that company and this movie is where they take their last stand. By the joint decision of the Pirate Lords and Ladies, the pirates _hoist the colors_ and honor the ones who died for it. This is them protecting their freedom and avenging the ones who died for it. Also, the way they created the details is also amazing; the nine pieces of eight -that were plain in sight for the previous movies- , the Pirata Codex, the necklaces that Calypso and Davy Jones share -in the Tia Dalma scene, her necklace was also shown in the second movie but it was so fast that many viewers failed to figure out her identity till the end- , the way that the pirates keep betraying each other -as it is their nature- but end up fighting and dying for each other. It's just the perfect movie for me...

Honestly when you’re so young the mature content goes over your head and you just have a good time. When you’re older, they’re very nostalgic and you begin to understand everything and relive them 😊 I’m glad I watched them in theaters when they came out even if I was really young because it was a once in a lifetime experience.

Personnaly I was like 8 when I discover PoC. But I started to watch Harry Potter at 6 (and Lotr at 10) so, fantasy wasn't really new but it just increased my love for this genre... damn being a kid in the 2000s was a wet dream when you loved fantasy movies. For PoC, the years gap between the 4th and 5th was too big to keep the hype I had in my childhood. Especially because the 5th one isn't good and the 4th one isn't on the same level of the first 3 which are, imo, among the best fantasy movies of cinema. Every single thing in the first 3 is on point. The CGIs on Davy Jones didn't aged and are far more better than those in the MCU. When you look the behind the scenes of the first one, you realise how this project was big and ballsy. There is an excellent mix of practical effects and CGIs (they really constructed the main parts of the ships, the ports and the Pearl). The sets and costumes are out of this world and the attention to details proves an incredible dedication from the movie crew to this universe (for exemple, the principle of giving a creative and unique design to every single member of Davy Jones crew), so props to Gore Verbinski who directed the first 3. Excellent world building and secondary characters who are each important. They are all very well used, especially the sidekicks. The acting... on point on every level from all the actors. And the fact that it's a creative, entertaining AND an exotic journey through THREE period movies is stellar. And it's fun without, however, lowering the stakes. There are serious themes mixed with mithological themes and sea legends from across the world... I mean, this franchise has everything. Sorry it was long, but I had to declare my love for this saga. I'm sorry for the fans, but, when you compare this to the MCU, it really makes you miss Disney making blockbuster like in the old days.

Also Elisabeth turning into a pirate king! When we remember the very first scene in the first movie, she is just a little kid that loves pirates, and its not even allowed to talk about them. She ended up turning one and even having the most epic pirate marriage of all time!

I was only 3 years old in 2003 when the first one came out can’t remember the first time I watched the Curse of the Black Pearl but like Harry Potter (which came out when I was a year old) Pirates of the Caribbean has always been my go to movies, I can’t remember the first time I watched both Harry Potter and Poc because of how long ago that was but I loved them as a young child, as a teenager and still love them just as much as a 22 year old adult. They’ve been steadfast movies throughout my life with epic journeys full of adventure and entertainment, both franchises/ series have both been written, directed and portrayed so beautifully and to me Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean are movies that are timeless for people of all ages, the magic of these movies will never fade for me and I think that’s something pretty hard to replicate - the feeling you get when you watch a movie or read a book, that’s what lasts and that’s why they (movies) mean something to you. I’m glad you guys have enjoyed the trilogy of Poc (they’re the best 3 movies out of the series in my opinion) but the other two are wonderful in they’re own right but just tell different stories and take you on other adventures, love your channel, it’s fun to see how people react to your favourite movies and hope you react to more!xx
