Normally in Chinese martial arts, before they begin a bout, they greet the opponent by holding up one palm covering a closed fist, signifying that it is a 'friendly' match as they are withholding true violence. When Ip Man fought the 10 Japanese, he crossed both hands into a fist (rather than palm over fist) meaning he's not going to hold back on them.

you are mistaking the 抱拳礼(holding fist) with 拱手礼 (bow hand), and the meanings are different too. the bow hand greeting is done with one hand "wrapping" around the other hand (usually the right hand as the right hand is the more dominant hand in fighting, you wrap it with your left hand to show that respect and that you're holding down your weapons), it is usually used in time of celebration when greeting with people (not limited to martial artists). the holding fist greeting is done in two ways, either left plam right fist or vice versa, usually with left palm right fist it represents modesty and left fist right palm it means you're a highly trained martial artist and is seeking challenge. it is also mentioned at times that a left palm right fist greeting means a friendly match and vice versa means a fight to the death, but those are mostly just novel stuffs and has no concrete historical evidence. the history is deep with this one and im not gonna get into too much details here. There is no saying about holding two hands as fist as a "not holding back/deathmatch" in any ways, it still comes down to the situation, personal preference, and the type of martial art you practice. When they tried to morph martial arts into wushu for performances, they unified the greeting into left palm right fist, but some martial arts still kept the right fist left palm greeting. one example is Wu family's bajiquan, the starting sequence are always left fist right palm.

Ip man did not invent wing chun. The style was created by a woman during the Qing Dynasty with the ideal of standing ground, fast, accurate and a style that doesn’t require extensive muscle strength. The style is later named after her. Ip man is simply considered the best in the domain, therefore called the grandmaster of Wing Chun

Ng Mui is a legend. Wing Chun's origins are more political in real life. The system was born due to a persecution of martial artist and shaolin monks during an opressive chinese dinasty (i don't remember of it was the Ming dinasty). To defend themselves, this people symplidfied kung fu to be more direct and minimalistic. The name "wing chun" means "eternal spring". It was a codename so nobody knew it was the name of a martial art.

The subs directly spell the kanji in how they would be pronounced in mandarin, that’s how Chinese and Japanese pronounce each other’s names, they read the characters in the way they pronounce it in their own languages, so no one know what each other are saying but we know the names’ meanings, same goes for place names.

Yeah. A year before John Wick 1, Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves were shooting Man of Tai Chi in Hong Kong, where they had help from Yuen Woo-Ping, who choreographed and directed the action on Matrix 1-3. Stahelski's talked about what he learned from them, like how in a Hong Kong production, everyone in every position has had a background in stunt work, which helped them with making Hong Kong action and stunts so prominent. I'm sure that Stahelski having owned his own stunt company for several years helped him apply a Hong Kong-style production into Hollywood as well.

interesting what you say there at the end about how you thought it would be one of the older ones with "a few hits and cuts" which is true for hollywood, but older chinese movies even as far back as the 60s theres some amazingly shot action. just go back and look at the fight at the end of say, dirty ho, so few cuts, so many hits, super long fights. theres some real gems out there

There are bts interviews with the director and choreographers detailing how they put a lot of efforts into designing the iconic scene, "Ip Man vs. 10 Japanese soldiers", from lighting, sound effects to camera angles, and most importantly, movements and actions, to make it feel satisfying to watch. It was not meant to be cruel. On the opposite, it was meant to be very, very satisfying to watch, after all the emotions built up to that point and the imperial Japanese doing all the fascist stuff.

Wing Chun was invented by a woman named Ng Mui, Mr YIP just made it globally popular because of his influence since during that time women were not seen as fighters or influential icons in so-called man’s world but it didn’t stop us from working hard to earn that recognition & respect. In my opinion DONNIE YEN is the only one who fits this role, I’ve seen most of all the other so-called versions that tell the untold story of Grandmaster YIP from different viewpoints who claim that their version is better than the next 🙄 pppfff not in this movie guru’s view they don’t. The only spin off movie with connection to DONNIE’s version is MASTER Z (if im not mistaken).
