First Time Watching Hellraiser 1987!! (Spooky Movie Marathon 🍿 )

Ойын-сауық

Hello Friends!
For a girl who has a hard time with horror, I actually enjoyed this movie. HELLRAISER was gooey and scary but also a lot of fun! And I like the idea of the cenobites. Moral of the story, anyone can be a simp, don't be a simp.

Cool bit in the novel is that when Frank summons the Cenobites they flat out ask him "man are you SURE you want to come with us? Our pleasures may be a bit...extreme for you." And Frank took that as a diss.

Clive Barker is a multifaceted creator. Hes a prolific writer, occasional director, and a visual artist. His work always involves sensuality and horror in equal measure. Besides Hellraiser 2, which is the only other movie in that series he was involved in (he wrote it, didnt direct it), NIGHTBREED (Directors Cut) should be one of the next Clive Barker you should see.. And definitely go for the Directors cut over the theatrical one.. the studio chopped it to bits when it first came out.. the cut footage was thought to be lost til it was found in a warehouse few years ago. Nightbreed is one of those horror movies where the monsters are.. well, not what they seem.

Best reaction to Hellraiser! Because you really understood what it is about. It's not a slasher movie about a monster killing teenagers. It's much deeper and serious. And it's more about Julia and Frank and their toxic relationship, and their own demons, rather than about the Cenobites. I mean, Pinhead is not even a secondary character. Frank is a sex addict, and he's always unsatisfied, and he's the most selfish man. He comes across this puzzle box which its said to give you sensations beyond the limits. What Frank doesn't know is that beyond the limits of human experience, beyond what it's humanly possible to experience, pain and pleasure are so extreme that at that far point they are the same. And then there's Julia, who comes out as a bitch but her character is actually so sad. Before meeting Frank she was an ordinary woman, like any other. Nothing special about her. Just a woman who dreamed about getting married and having a family. But then Frank appears turning her life upside down, giving her en experience she never dreamed she could have. And I guess she was so transfixed by Frank and she fell so in love with him that she abandoned her own will and became like a dog at her master's feet. a willing victim for him giving him the power to do whatever he wants with her. And of course Frank takes advantage of that. If you think about it her character is so sad. I feel a lot of sympathy for Julia. Because I know that feeling of loving someone else more than yourself. And that's what I like about this movie. Frank is both a victim and a villain, Julia is both a victim and a villain, while Pinhead is totally neutral, just a worker doing his job. So yes, this movie has a great story and I loved that you got it right. Great job.

The (fictional) lore and mythology of the Cenobites, the "explorers", is quite extensive. The most important thing for you to learn is that the "hell" in Hellraiser is not the christian hell. The Cenobites are not satanic in that regard. They are tricksters who bring people who summon them to a personal hell in their realm. They deal in sensations but every sensation they offer, pain or pleasure, is extreme to the level of torment. Frank reasoned that he had experienced every pleasure and every sensation this world had to offer. The experience the Cenobites offered was not what he expected.

Confronting a childhood fear, even in the form of (or perhaps ESPECIALLY in the form of) a particular movie poster/cover, is kind of a big deal. Kudos to you for putting fear aside and experiencing the thing itself. This is such an interesting film because the mystery of the seeming antagonists (Pinhead and Cenobites) is so palpable. You're given virtually no explanation about who they are and what purpose they serve, other than they are explorers, and can be viewed in diametric opposition by their summoners as angels or demons, liberators or oppressors. I'm sort of guessing that you're watching this now because you know there is a new 2022 Hellraiser reboot on Hulu, which I've seen and I think is really pretty good--actually hoping for a sequel. This film was directed by the author upon whose novella the story is based. He is a very talented writer and has a great imagination--back in the 80s, none other than Stephen King called this guy the new king of horror. The guy who directed the 2022 reboot directed a seemingly underrated horror film called The Night House a couple of years ago, which was really effective and not just scared me but made me feel unsafe, which I don't know if I've felt that since I first saw The Exorcist, but there are two recommendations for you right there for the month of ROCKTOBER.

In Britain 'Jesus Wept' is a phrase used as an expression of exasperation, often used sarcastically. It's also Jesus' reaction to Lazarus' family and their grief at the death of their beloved family member. So I guess you can take it as Frank sarcastically saying that his niece will grieve his death or that he grieves the deaths of his brother and sister-in-law. Had to google to explain it properly.

HELLRAISER was initially a fairly non-religious series. The Cenobites weren't evil, and their realm wasn't Hell per se. But as the series changed hands and Barker had trouble coming up with more ideas, it became more traditionally good v. evil-ish. Aside from one giant plot hole, HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II does a lot more worldbuilding, and fleshes out the world of the box more. The novella is also a different beast that avoids moralistic characterizations. I can't say much more without spoiling things because the sequel is where most of the mythology comes from. But I can say that HELLRAISER III was the last decent entry into a 10-film series that fell off the cliff harder than any other horror franchise, even the LEPRECHAUN series.

Diving into the deep end to start off this season. I have 2 requirements when it comes to my horror from the 80's, 90's especially. One, will there be puppets, and Two, will those puppets be wet or gooey. I'm talking spritz those puppets to a glossy sheen, shining. Hellraiser was so gooey and moist, them puppets so wet, it had to be humid on the set of this film, everyone looks uncomfortable and sweaty. Now there are other films of that era far more gooey, puppets far wetter, but Hellraiser is pretty disgusting with the goo. Also, that score was way too high quality than it needed to be, effort was put into the composition and execution for a moist dripping horror movie like this, which is also part of the charm

Funny story: the novella this film is adapted from is called The Hellbound Heart. That was also the working title of the film early in production, but the studio wanted a new title because they thought The Hellbound Heart sounded like a dramatic romance. Before someome suggested Hellraiser, a crew member who was a woman in her mid to late 60s, suggested calling the film "What a Woman Would do for a Good Fuck".

I'm gonna take a stab at the "Jesus wept" line. The phrase is used commonly in British and Irish dialects as an expression of exasperation, often used sarcastically or even as an expletive. Wiktionary says that saying Jesus wept is expressing annoyed incredulity. He might as well have said "holy shit". But with all the religious symbols and symbolism in the film (in this case, Frank being more or less in a crucified position), i also take it as him saying: "Jesus wept, but i'm grinning". The line was originally supposed to be “fuck you”, but Andrew Robinson ( ❤) ad-libbed the line, and writer/director Clive Barker liked it enough to keep it.

"Jesus wept" was an improvisation by the Actor Andrew Robinson (who is also Garrick from Star Trek Deep Space Nine, if you have seen that). The line was supposed to be “f**k you” to Kirsty for getting him caught by the cenobytes, but reportedly Robinson does not like cursing and so he tried one take with that as he had, as a child, often heard people say that instead of cursing (instead of taking the Lord's name in vain, that is).

Honestly Imon, Frank was into some extreme masochism. And definitely, that dress is going to need all kinds of cleaning before that wedding. I love Hellraiser. The sequels kinda get stupid after Doug Bradley dropped out of the Pinhead role, imo.

NightBreed which I think is one of Clive Barker's first works isn't well polished but it really showed his vision and the characters have such rich backstories. a horror movie you might want to see. especially since it's more mind trippy. and you actually end up rooting for who you don't expect to. since it's rare to have a protagonist who's gaslighted. also, Dark City is a fun mind-bender. feel like a Tim Burton movie in terms of style.

Another fun fact: Pinhead is not his actual name, he was originally called “The Hell Priest” an Pinhead was jus a fan nickname, cant deny it fits though lol

You could watch Hellraiser 2 (uncensored version) that explain the lore of Hellraiser then saw 3 then 4. The other was less connected to the lore but the last one was good. Then the Hellraiser Reboot from 2022 is a good movie a little bit connected to Hellraiser 2 for me.

funny story: i once tweeted at shudder jokingly asking why Hellraiser was in their queer horror collection, and they actually responded and told me that Clive Barker is openly queer! I had no idea at the time, I knew a lot of other lgbt ppl that love this movie as much as i do but i'd somehow never picked that up. anyway, i love every minute of this gooey ass movie lol

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 74 (Look for the documentary The Shocking Truth which is about the making of this movie)& Black Christmas 74 (Bob Clark also directed A Christmas Story) are also great horror classics.

Hellraiser is a goofy departure from its source material. 🤣 In Hellbound Heart, the Lead Cenobite is comedic. It's an androgynous smartass, with the voice of an excited little girl. And it's never called "Pinhead", just Hell Priest.

The reason hellraiser is one of the scariest franchises to me is because the cenobites have a reason (for their own twisted pleasure) to torture you. For eternity. And also I think that some of the people go into it thinking it's only about pleasure not understanding the Cenobites now have a different definition/view of it. No thanks lol

I believe the Cenobites are judges. Not boogie men like Jason or Freddie Krueger. Unfortunately the films do kinda turn them into your typical boogie men

"Jesus wept". Well, I think we could make some kind of Jesus- Frank parallels. First silly one, the names have the same number of letters. Frank´s death could be compared to a crucifixion. Frank resurrects. Come to daddy - Let the children come to me... For sure there are more, and some of them not so obvious and more abstract, all this thing with the blood bringing the flesh... At the same time he and his brother are Cain/Abel like figures? So, yes, biblical and religious references are very present. I love this movie, it is one of my favorites in a general way, not just in its genre. It has something special and I find it fascinating every time.
