As a kid I always thought Coraline's mom was being harsh not giving her the gloves, but if you notice the price on them, they're almost $25. Makes a lot more sense why the mom would refuse, especially if she already has to buy all new uniforms.

When a mushroom spore lands in a suitable location, the underground hyphae (fungus roots) grow out evenly in all directions. As the fungus grows and ages, the oldest parts in the center of the mat die, creating a circle. When the fungus produces its mushrooms - the fruiting bodies - they appear aboveground in a ring

Yes, getting mistaken for Tim Burton is a bit of a recurring thing with Henry Selick; he also directed "The Nightmare Before Christmas", which everyone also keeps assuming was directed by Burton (though he did produce that one and script the story)

This plays out like a modern fairy tale. It has those dark themes that fairy tales used to have, with some of the classic tropes, It just plays out in a modern setting. There are some things that aren't crystal clear and not logical, but still work to make the story feel mysterious and whimsical. Definitely one of my favorite animated films.

If anyone's actually curious, the reason mushrooms grow in a circle is the fungi spores land somewhere and the roots take hold underground and grow in all directions. The circle forms when the newest mushrooms grow and the oldest parts in the middle die creating a circle

So basically the other mother is the bedlam. By implanting the buttons in the eyes of the children she is essentially able to eat their “lives” and uses that for sustenance. I’m the beginning of the movie you saw how the other mother changed the doll from looking like the old lady’s sister to coralline. The other mother is basically a type of spider who lives in her own pocket dimension. The energy from the other childrens eyes is what powers the world and what she manipulates in order to change things however she pleases, as you saw when she finally reveals her true form, all of the other stuff like the benches, chairs etc are just bugs she’s captured and which she can polymorph into less insecty stuff. This is also why when coralline grabs each eye the world in that area basically falls apart as that eye is no longer powering that part of the other mothers dimension. The real mother has a neck brace from the car accident that happened a while back, whereas the other mothers outfit has a high neck attachment which is more stylish. The other mother can create living dolls like the other father and the other wybie but these are at least somewhat more independent in thought and already are aware of the malicious intent of the other mother but for the most part are controlled by her, however that control is not 100% of the time which is why the other wybie attempts to help coraline initially escape as well as the other father saying “sorry the other mother is making me.” There are a few concepts/meanings you could say with this movie, “be careful what you wish for”, “if something is too good to be true, it probably is” or “you don’t know what you have until it’s gone,” Those are a few of the ones I thought of. All in all it’s a very memorable albeit scary movie. Like one of the few movies that legit had me freaked out for about a week after watching it. This is in my opinion a good scary movie because unlike most scary movies typically out in the theaters it doesn’t rely on blood/gruesome scenes, jump scares or overtly grotesque monsters to create the fear, it’s the whole ambience of the other dimension and the other mother. It’s TOO perfect, that sense that there has to be a catch. And I know for a fact that the other mother triggers the phenomenon known as “the uncanny valley” the unsettling feeling we get when we look at something that appears human but isn’t (think the button eyes). The Uncanny valley effect automatically creeps us as people out. That concept is interesting on its own and is worth a quick look into online when you get a chance. But finishing thoughts, it’s a great movie and I loved your reaction. I found your channel from your Arcane reaction so I’m looking forward to more of your reactions on that series. Keep up the great reactions!

Saw this movie in the military, and it kinda freaked me out. It gave me memories of a dream I used to have when I was like 4 or 6. We had this closet I swear had a little door. The lead to a nothing wall. I rember I used to sneak down there and go through it and I had the perfect family as well we're very poor. And everytime I woke up. I was sad I wasn't there. Now they didn't have button eyes. But their eyes were always black. I told my dad about the dreams about five days in I believe because they were kinda getting upset with my indecisiveness if I remeber right. And he just looked freaked out and said never to go back. So I didn't. So now being a spiritualist and watching it again when I became one. Gave me whole different kind of shiver. To the core.

Everything becomes a lot scarier when you have the full context. Even the lyrics of the dad’s song lyrics. “When she comes around exploring, mother and I will never ever make it boring OUR EYES WILL BE ON CORALINE!” I don’t think everyone depressed. I think the parents finances are going through some financial hardships and have to make some downgrades and double down on their work. It would explain a lot of thing. Their moving into a third of a house and judging by her ignorance about poison oak and her reaction to the bugs I’d say this place isn’t an upgrade from their old home. It explains their mood, their focus being on work, and them not buying nonessential items like gloves. Also it explains Coralines behavior. If they were always like this she wouldn’t be trying so hard to get their attention and so disappointed when it doesn’t work. A child that had always been neglected would be more closed of and resigned by now.

The two older women remind me a lot of the British drag queens Hinge and Bracket. Unrelated to those two, this seems very much a 2008-aftermath movie. The financial struggles of Coraline's family bubbling beneath the surface of a kind of fairy tale. Struggles with food and housing and work in a period of declining living standards. The whole thing with Coraline's mum getting snappy with Coraline over the gloves also looks very much like a mother too embarrassed to say she can't afford them because she isn't used to saying no to small things.

My family moved to this big house in the country back when I was 10, 2 acres of land on both sides, neighbors spread out and pitch black at night. I saw way too may dark corners in that house when we first moved in, and this movie reminds me of that whenever I watch it. Of course there were no portals to other dimensions, button eyes doppelganger parents or singing mice, the mice were very much not of rhe musical variety, unfortunately. In fact the scariest thing I remember was when I encountered a Sasquatch, or "Wood Ape"

There is a ton of symbolism: - The eyes are the windows to the soul. She's taking their eyes, so she's taking their ... - On the cake when Coraline first comes and it says welcome home there are two loops in the O. When there are 2 loops in an O in cursive it means it's a lie (similar to the crossing of the fingers in the wedding picture in The Truman Show) - The portraits of the 3 ghost children are on the wall in the living room - The Other Mother is modeled after a spider, a Black widow to be specific. Black Widows eat their young: "Maybe she just wants something to eat", "Mother's don't eat daughters...do they?" They also have webs so perilous for their male mates to traverse that many don't even make it and are killed that way; we can clearly see this in the Other Mother's character. - There is a lot of eye symbolism and specifically one eye and third eye symbolism: The buttons and eyes in general, Ms. Spinks hat, the children covering only one of their eyes when they ask Coraline to free them, the seeing stone (which is also triangular or pyramid shaped), when the Other Mother taps one eye and vanishes, there's just a lot -And yes you caught it about the correlation between the well and the door ! The scary part of that is..well that means that they just sent the key as well as her hand right back to her and they didn't end anything (though she did still free the souls of the ghost children from their hellish purgatory) - I also love the commentary on how neither parent likes to garden but they have to write about gardening to make a living...kind of how influencers stage things to portray a certain life that also isn't reality. And the other world is a continuation of that symbolism of facade vs. reality. Other fun facts: - Neil Gaiman confirmed that in the novel Ms Spink and Forcible are indeed a couple, they kept it ambiguous for the movie - Bobinsky's skin is blue because he was part of the Chernobyl cleanup efforts, he also wears his medal for this - Yes the mother is wearing a neck brace you're right it's not a fashion statement. It is implied that Coraline inadvertenly did something to get them into a car accident. The implication is that the cost of this accident (medical bills, paying for a new car, insurance premiums, the mother's inability to work and therefore have 2 incomes) affected their current financial situation heavily. Her mom is still in pain and recovering from the accident but can't even rest because she has to get back to work so urgently to try to make up for the hole they're now in. If you pay attention you can also see that even though she tries not to emotionally she does kind of blame Coraline for the accident, her injury and their current life situation. - The doll in the utmost opening scene is Wybie's grandmother's taken twin sister. Like Wybie said his grandmother has not allowed people with children to lodge there since then which is why the last doll was her and then it is changed to Coraline, the next child in a long time to come.

I was fortunate enough to see this movie in 3D. Normally I hate 3D, but for stop motion you are seeing actual objects and the effect is breathtaking, the tunnel expanding, the garden, it all looked so real. I think this movie is the dark side of escapism and wish fulfillment. The Beldam uses the wishes and dreams of kids to ensnare and kill them. Coraline luckily learns that the world she offers is too good to be true. I don't really even think that the adults have changed at the end of the movie. I think we just see the parents at a really low point in their lives and by the end they have coped with it and realized that they have been neglecting to show proper love to their daughter. It's a very mundane tale outside of Beldam's trap, just parents being parents in the "real world". And you nailed it with the Beldam also being a cautionary tale for adults. She is a mother who thinks only of what her daughter can do for her and wants everyone to see the way she does (with button eyes). It's why so many parents are creeped out by this book. When she screams, "come back. I can't live without you!" it''s pretty much addressed spot on.

One thing I really like about this movie is about how it parallels child predation kind of perfectly. Like, predators will lovebomb their victims like crazy, gain their trust by using their unfortunate life situations, and when something eventually comes up that the child finally sees a red flag in or is uncomfortable with doing (in this case, the buttons), the predator will continue to lay the pressure and manipulation on thick until they get what they want. (Obviously not every case is exactly like this, but it is very commonly how it plays out. I do wonder if such a parallel was intentional by the story writers, it really feels like it was, at least to some degree?)

There is lots of theories around this movie. But you pointed out the paralleles between the well and the tunnel, and there are theories out there that leads to the conclusion of the well being the original entrance to the other world. Wybie said to Coraline when introducing the well that once you're at the bottom you can see stars. And what only time of the day we see in the otherworld even when Coraline enters it during the day when her mother left to go shop ? Nightime. Also this leads to other theories about the Beldam falling into it before she became the way she is now.

My friend didn't so much because it's pretty different from the book, and as much as I'm a fan of Neil Gaiman, I like this movie for what it is as much as I like the book for what it is. Also, totally get the confusion about this and Nightmare Before Christmas both being Tim Burton projects. They actually both do have the same director, Henry Sellick, whereas Tim Burton produced Nightmare but had nothing to do with this. Also it just has that same feel either way. And either way, they're both great.

Her parents aren’t intentionally bad parents, they just got overwhelmed by the pressure of work and forgot they still need to be there for her. Have you seen Spirited away? Another story of a girl about this age, moving to a new place who has to learn independence and to overcome her fears to save her parents.

This one is great. I saw it in the theaters when it came out. I've always loved stop motion animation. That's why the stop motion Community episode was one of my favorites. Have you ever seen the Wallace and Gromit movies? They are classics in the sub-genre of Claymation!

I was obsessed with this movie as a teen, and first read the book in the children's literature module during my first year at uni. We read it alongside a poem by John Keats, 'La Belle Dame sans Merci'. I can't remember if/how much Neil Gaiman (and Henry Selick) took direct inspiration from the poem, but I love the nod to it by having the Other Mother's title be the "Beldam". The full poem: O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms, Alone and palely loitering? The sedge has withered from the lake, And no birds sing. O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms, So haggard and so woe-begone? The squirrel’s granary is full, And the harvest’s done. I see a lily on thy brow, With anguish moist and fever-dew, And on thy cheeks a fading rose Fast withereth too. I met a lady in the meads, Full beautiful-a faery’s child, Her hair was long, her foot was light, And her eyes were wild. I made a garland for her head, And bracelets too, and fragrant zone; She looked at me as she did love, And made sweet moan I set her on my pacing steed, And nothing else saw all day long, For sidelong would she bend, and sing A faery’s song. She found me roots of relish sweet, And honey wild, and manna-dew, And sure in language strange she said- 'I love thee true’. She took me to her Elfin grot, And there she wept and sighed full sore, And there I shut her wild wild eyes With kisses four. And there she lullèd me asleep, And there I dreamed-Ah! woe betide!- The latest dream I ever dreamt On the cold hill side. I saw pale kings and princes too, Pale warriors, death-pale were they all; They cried-‘La Belle Dame sans Merci Thee hath in thrall!’ I saw their starved lips in the gloam, With horrid warning gapèd wide, And I awoke and found me here, On the cold hill’s side. And this is why I sojourn here, Alone and palely loitering, Though the sedge is withered from the lake, And no birds sing.

A little fact on this, this movie was originally based on a book. The book was made by Neil Gaiman, he did give a warning that this book wasn’t a usually curious girl or fun adventure like others. He made this book to scare children, because he said that at a certain age some children like being scared or like the thrill of it. So even though this is in the category of “children books” this is a scary childhood book. Neil is known to always go and target any kids at any ages. Another thing is that it should have been known that this movie was going to be quite “scary” or “intimidating for children”. Especially since Henry Selick created the classic Nightmare Before Christmas, a movie that also has some aspects of fright. I forgot who talked about this, but someone who worked on Coraline (director or staff) said that it was “bullshit” since several books that had scary moments were still based as “not scary” and “very cute”. An example that that person made was Where The Wild Things Are. The book even if it has very scary moments both book and movie, it is still considered as fun and good for children. At this point it is up to the parent to decide on what age it should be targeted to and if they would let their children watch it. To simply say both Neil and Henry made Coraline for all ages.

Oh forgot to mention this was filmed in 3D. I actually have a 3D TV in part because of how much I loved this movie (one of the few people left who do, I think). You can tell with how the mouse circus went, how the needle poked out from the button holes, how the doll came and went out the window, etc, that they were showing off the 3D.

"why can't she get those gloves?" they're 25 bucks! the family seems to be struggling with money, as seen with the single dollar tip and weird goulash of a dinner, along with how they only have condiments in the fridge, so an unnecessary 25 dollar expense is too much for mom but seems unfair to coraline. edit: i think you are confused about wybie's grandma. her sister was taken by the beldam when they were children, and you can see her ghost as the little girl with braids. she kept the doll so that the beldam couldn't spy on anyone else and as a reminder of her sister, and didn't let people with kids stay in the pink palace until coraline's family. i think she thought it had died from lack of food, but it hadn't. as for what happened to her, they told you- she went through the door, allowed the beldam to sew buttons into her eyes, and ate up her life.

Coraline is such a classic I love children horror movies, I love film in general movies and shows... horror is probably my least favorite genre bit also has some of my favorite movies of all time the genre is just iver saturated when it's the conjuring type movie where it's just loud sound effects and jump scares but truly great horror like Coraline or silence of the lambs is truly creepy and tells such an amazing story and children's horror can't rely on gore so the story has to be perfect and Coraline is a perfect example of this it's truly art... love your reactions keep up the good work

𝙵𝚞𝚗 𝙵𝚊𝚌𝚝𝚜: * Beldame means an old woman, a malicious and ugly woman; especially an old one, a witch. * When the Other Father is “playing” the piano, his song is a warning to Coraline about the Other Mother’s true nature. * If you listen to the Other Mother when she hums, she is literally singing the lullaby from the beginning. You can hear her humming it as well when she’s cooking in the kitchen. * In a way, she is very similar to the Devil himself. They both cannot create but only duplicate and manipulated to make it seem tempting. They both wish to gain power, they can’t resist a challenge to try to show how superior they are, they always lie with fake promises, and they both try to gain human souls. The fact that the Other Mother pursued them to let her sow the buttons for eyes, she gains more power and has their souls trapped there. There is an old saying is that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Therefore by having their eyes she has their soul trapped in the Other World.
