I agree. It breaks an illusion that would otherwise allow us to suspend reality and feel like we're watching with you. It's like how you might avoid knowing anything about the game you recorded but haven't watched yet. If you can avoid knowing any details of the game, it's easier to pretend you didn't actually miss it. I like that you're experimenting with the format. I'm new to the room, but I appreciate growth and change. But the premature reactions are kind of a bummer, ngl.

It's spoilers for the reaction, sure, but it's also just confusing for those of us who haven't watched this episode recently enough to remember it fully. For them they're talking about something they just watched, they have full context. For a lot of us we have to spend a lot more energy trying to remember something years ago and what they're referencing.

It's so funny hearing your comments about Picard being "the old guy" and Riker being "the young guy"; in 1987, Patrick Stewart was only 47, and Jonathan Frakes was 35. I was 21 at the time, and I always thought of Captain Picard as being in his 60s (though admittedly in tremendous shape). Now I'm 10 years older than he was then, and he still seems like my fit grandpa.

For the record, it was less about the studio's concern about Patrick Stewart's appeal to the audience and likely more about Gene Roddenberry possibly trying to sabotage him. Roddenberry really did not want to cast Stewart. He hated that he was bald so much that Stewart was forced to wear a toupee in one of his auditions. While I don't know specifics about the behind the scenes details about this episode, it is widely known that the writers were furious with Roddenberry as he would rewrite and take credit for many of the scripts. it was becoming clear that the biggest obstacle to production harmony was Gene himself. The office was breaking into warring camps.

George Lucas wasn't the same without the same creative team either. great stuff is rarely created by a single person. Gene had the vision but others had to make it a reality. And as so often, the more hands-on the creator gets, constantly changing everything, the worse the end result.

@@wyrmshadow4374 Correct, it was Roddenberry's lawyer friend Leonard Maizlish who fancied himself a writer and altered the scripts of the first season, ruining them in most cases. Maizlish operated with impunity by dropping Roddenberry's name, claiming his own script changes were by Roddenberry, and generally harassing those who tried to stop him. He drove off numerous writers and all of the TOS carryover staff like D.C. Fontana and Robert Justman. "The Trouble with Tribbles" writer David Gerrold called Maizlish "evil," "destructive," and "a disgusting scumbag" and speculated that if he were murdered people would actually rejoice. His list of illegal and unethical activities, from violations of Writers Guild guidelines to manipulative contract practices, really paints a picture of a self-important, criminally immoral sleazebag. He died about three years after Roddenberry and I doubt anyone grieved.

The one thing you guys gotta remember is that Rodenberry had some of the stories lying around for a while in the 20 year period between the series. Also, what he wanted to do with this show was give us both his and his pike in one captain, which is PICARD And you have to remember that also what Rodenberry did was make a 23rd century and a 24th century version of Horacio Hornblower written by CS Foster that was his inspiration for all Star Trek an angel one is one of those scripts that he had been working on over the 20 year period that he couldn’t get done in the 60s that when he was given a second chance he got it done in the 80s

Roddenberry liked to dip his toe into that old sci-fi trope of matriarchal societies (yes they do exist in reality too). For a far less subtle, but more satisfying example check out Roddenberry's 1974 TV movie "Planet Earth" featuring John Saxon as a sort of Buck Rogers/Captain Kirk character and Diana Muldaur as the matriarchal leader.

I was also going to mention "Planet Earth." This does feel like Gene went to the writers and said, "Use this from that failed pilot I did 15 years ago." Both instances are a weirdly misogynistic take on a female based society...Planet Earfh probably more so.

  • @DanielGarrett0123

@@mightyrrt I wouldn't be surprised if Roddenberry said something like that to the writers. However, I would characterize the plots of both "Planet Earth" and "Angel One" as uninformed rather than misogynistic. Gene was born in 1921 and kind of missed the boat on feminism. However he was enlightened enough to have a woman as "Number One" in the original ST TOS pilot. "Planet Earth" is set in a dystopian 22nd century post nuclear world and the plot feels more like a 1950's sci-fi movie, I agree. But it is entertaining and the performances aren't bad.

Good stuff with Geordi and Worf. They finally got a little to do. They'll eventually get more. I know some of the actors were very frustrated early on, but they didn't really understand that it was meant to be an ensemble. The plan was always to include them more and give them more to do eventually. But they wanted to establish the _main_ main characters first. TOS had such a focus on the core three of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. Whether deliberately or not, the writers felt they had to try and replicate that somewhat early on with Picard, Riker, and Data. When the show eventually moves from a plot-driven to character-driven format, every character will get their moment to shine in their own dedicated episodes, and I think the actors were a lot happier with that even though some characters got more episodes than others. But still, early on when they're still doing the plot-driven thing, the lower ranked characters got their moments and character development here and there. Geordi and Worf is a good example of that in Angel One. Not my favorite episode of season 1 by a long shot, but at least things are getting as little better in key areas of the writing.

So one Captain of the Enterprise was referred to as a walking Library, and was such a teachers pet at the academy when he cheated on a major exam he was given top marks for ingenuity. Another Captain was a party animal who once got in a bar fight, got stabbed in the back, and /laughed/ about it. On a similar vein. One superhero uses various methods of gadgetry, martial arts and Parkour to fight crime. The other is blind and uses his enhanced hearing to track and fight his opponents.. And if you don't know comics you are going to be confused which is Daredevil and which is Batman.

In the aborted Star Trek: Phase II, Captain Kirk was going to take more of a backseat role in the stories. When Star Trek: The Next Generation was conceived, a lot of Phase II concepts were recycled, including the Decker/Ilia relationship and the captain who stays on the ship while the first officer stars in the adventures. They never completely got behind this formula, but this episode is an example of what they were going for in that regard. So it's not that they had to shoehorn Riker into the role of adventure leader; it was their plan from the beginning.

The first season is hit or miss with more misses than hits. That being said, even the misses have moments and are important toward the development of the characters. One episode coming up will change how you watch every episode after. The second season, although better, has it's own problem. By the third season, the majority of episodes are hits. The characters still develop throughout the shows run, but the foundation is set.

Hey I like the new intro of giving initial thoughts of the episode leading into the reaction. Alot of channels wind up getting stagnant & repetitive so it's good mix things up a bit. Also I like the shift into commentary. Alot of React channels get very lazy (almost to the point of copyright infringement in some cases) EFAP went over this trend in youtube on their podcast covering the XQC dramma of him stealing people's videos for his stream. Keep up the good work, don't be afraid to experiment. Anyway, this is the first mention of the Romulans in TNG. After "The First Outpost" the writers had missgivings about making the Ferengi the main villians & shortly after they would go through their scripts & literally Scribble Out references to Ferengi & write in Romulan. You'll be seeing them in a little while. The Ferengi won't get proper development until Deep Space 9

To see you laughing about Picard being on the ship sick while Riker running around being the new Kirk had me 😂 I always thought Riker was a lot like Kirk @ 1st. I thought it was strange that Picard never left the bridge like Kirk but I quickly accepted it. You will see I think you will come to like Picard very much 😁

Something that may help with a minor modification to intro - NEXT GENERATION had the brief advert spots for each episode - like a trailer for it. Maybe after the brief opening chat, could react to the episode teaser, discuss thoughts on what you see there, and how it shapes your view of what will be in the episode, then the episode proper with post episode breakdown discussion. That, or include the trailer part in the previous video - most shorts you can find online were originally shown after the puddle with the tagline “next time, on Star Trek the next generation”

U guys know in a 7-season series (seasons were long back then) there's going to be great episodes, good & duds. U guys see Riker is more "Kirk like" (by design). As loved at TOS is, there was criticism - wasn't realistic for a Commanding Officer to risk him/herself off the ship every away mission. Executive Officer (XO/1st Officer) shld be experienced enough to handle it & carry out the Captain's instructions. This (to me) is a realistic improvement w/TNG. TOS needed an "action hero" to be successful in time it came out. Every series evolves Trek canon. Regardless, I don't think Picard/Riker dynamic takes anything away from Picard. Capt. Picard has "senior Captain wisdom" & command presence. He's strong enough character to handle Riker's role.

Angel One, how nice of the writers to put the episode rating in the title. Only note worthy for the first mention of the Romulans in TNG who probably replaced the Ferengi in script after how cartoonish they came off in their introduction.

I honestly think some of the over-the-top sexual scenes in ST:TNG was because of Roddenberry wanting to stick it to the networks for all of the angst they caused him during TOS. Remember, TNG was not produced by or for a major network. It was sold immediately into syndication and started a trend for many shows that followed. Local non affiliated channels were not as stringent in regard to content as network channels were. Also, TNGs distribution was an early version of what we have come to take for granted today, specifically more options to watch. I was able to watch TNG on WPIX in New York and also on a Philly station that was on my cable system at the time. Plus, TNG also ushered in another common viewing option. They aired it twice a week, unheard of by network standards at that time. So even if you forgot to set your VCR (the recording technology of the time folks), you still had another shot at seeing the latest episode. And for what it's worth, the over-the-top sexual scenes diminished as the series progressed.

Even more than that. TNG was not released 26 episodes in 26 weeks. They would release new episodes for 5 or 6 weeks then rerun episodes for 2 to 4 weeks. Again, because of the flexibility of syndication, production wasn't under pressure to do a new episode a week. This was another facet that TNG brought to the industry. Today, the major networks often run repeats during the traditional TV season. @@TheDougMan

I didn't hear anyone call her "Dr. Beverly" this episode. 😭😭😭 This episode is a hilariously bad take on a matriarchy but entertaining for sure and honestly? Worth it for Riker's outfit. And we love a command moment for Geordi. Very astute take on the "Kirk speeches." I'll say this as vaguely as possible, but I'm looking forward to y'all's takes on speeches from other characters.

I'm glad you two brought up the sex in TNG. Roddenberry changed a bit sense the 60s, and his vision of the future. Sci Fi changed in the 70s. The free love liberal movement entered Genre writing. The ideas of casual sex, no responsibility, elitist liberalism started to form, and anti materialism. This created that pajama jump suit clothing style in sci fi that we see in TMP, and TNG, with a lot of casual romance. IT also effected the character writing. Roddenberry suppressed any character conflict between the crew members of the Enterprise. This gave the writers a hard time developing character, personality, and social dynamics. The problems carried into season 2. Your comments about Picard, and Riker being a back up are spot on. The studio did not have confidence in Stewart at all. Riker's character, and unattached 1st officer roll was made as an emergency replacement if they decided to get rid of Stewart. It was not until about half way there season 1 that Stewart proved to the behind the scenes critics he was a good member of the cast. Mostly because the audience liked him. The dynamic of Picard's stoic dignity, and diplomatic view, along side Riker's more adventurous, and gregarious personality really works.
