First Time Using My Gold Cube Trommel

Ойын-сауық

We got up to Gert's Place this Memorial Day weekend for a little gold prospecting. I finally got to use my trommel on my gold cube for the first time. I had a blast, and found some gold. Thank you Dan (Boomer) and Mary for hosting an awesome weekend.

Nice work! Cleaning up the glass too! Thank you! I can’t go in my local Salt River without shoes due to the plethora of broken bottles. 😢 (cut my foot up pretty bad the last time I tried to cross barefoot)! I have the standard Gold Cube with the 1/4” hole top-tray separator and added a 4th layer nugget trap with Dream Mat. The top tray has me wishing I had a mechanical trommel too, but I prospect solo and that’s a lot of gear to lug around! I’ve since switched over to a 52” mobile folding sluice by Royal Manufacturing and it seems to do great. Then, I upgrade my cons through the Gold Cube and clean-up with a Desert Fox spiral wheel and finally some hand-panning. No miller table here yet, so I’ve saved my super-cons for further upgrading just in case! Great work out there! Gold squad out! 🙌🏼 PS. Have some of that Mackinac Island fudge for us all!

Thank you! Yeah, that glass can be a real hazard, I cut my hand pretty good on a piece not that long ago. The trommel is nice for sure, but it is bulky no doubt. The high banker option like that is a nice in between, I think. Sounds like a good system you have. What size spiral wheel do you have? I have a smaller one, but I have not tried it out yet. Heavy pans!

@@MyMIAdventures-cv4dt I’ve got the smaller gold wheel too and it seems to work great. I’ve re-run my tailings through the spiral wheel and haven’t found enough gold to justify doing that every single time. Seems to catch 99% of the shiny I’ve put through it. I bought the Gold Cube with the intention of using it in-field just like you and gave it a few tries, but it became too much to lug around by myself. I’ll bet you could adapt that trommel to a sluice though! My new tactic is to use the Royal Manufacturing sluice as my primary way to collect concentrates and then I upgrade those cons all in one go with the Gold Cube either at home or a clean-up day near water. The final clean-up happens on the spiral wheel and at home. I classify everything down to 3 of my finest mesh sizes, hand-pan anything larger, and then do a thorough run with my super-cons! Sluice-it. Cube-it. Wheel-it. Pan-it. (^Daft Punk’s next hit? 😂)

Oh cool, I have been hearing mixed things about the smaller wheel. I am excited to try it out though. Sounds like you got it down to a science, haha yeah that could definitely be a hit song. I have thought about adapting the trommel to a sluice. I do like the cube a lot, but the set up can be a bit much depending on terrain. I got it with Lake Superior in mind, but of course that got shut down this year.

@@MyMIAdventures-cv4dt OoooOh I hear the cube does great ‘round those parts! Thanks! I’m still dialing things in. My next move will be to add a trommel to the sluice for sure. I still hand classify and with all the other setup and tear-down work…. I barely have enough energy left to feed myself some days! 🤣 I’m not totally sold on the spiral wheel and I hear it’s good for round/chunky gold. Most of Arizona’s AU is flat and flakey so I think I’ll have to try a Miller Table next and check some old tailings. However, so far the spiral wheel doesn’t seem to have missed anything. Desert Fox wheel ( I think mine is 12”?) and it seems to have a bump in the rotation like the larger wheels too. ~9 drops of Jet Dry. Put on a movie and spoon feed your cons! Either way, the cube has caught everything so far and in the first 2 trays too! I’ve re-processed tons of tailings a 2nd time only to find nothing at all. From one prospector to another - you’re doing great! Keep up the stellar content and the gold will follow too!

Yeah the cube should work really good for beach gold. I will have to wait another year to find out though. Man, that hand classifying will really take it out of you! But a classifier and a bucket are easier to lug around though. Nice, I am going to try my wheel out sometime this week I am hoping. Thank you, I appreciate it!

I was in the GPAA in Michigan. I prospected for 4 years. I sure had fun but in one day metal detecting I found more $$ in silver coins (pre-1965) than I did in 4 years of Michigan gold prospecting

It is a lot of fun, but certainly does not pay well in Michigan haha. I love to metal detect too, there are certainly a lot of good finds out there.

Get Dream Mat, but don't put it on your slick plate. The slick plate serves a purpose (separating lights from heavies before they hit the mats, which makes it work better overall), which is why it's there, and you want to keep it. Instead, get a tray (or three) with Dream Mat in it, or replace the original matting with Dream Mats in your existing trays. I have all three sizes of Dream Mat in trays I got from Prospector's Dream, and I don't find myself using the original trays anymore unless I'm dealing with ultra fine gold, which is virtually never. Dream Mat is vastly superior to the original conveyor belt matting in my opinion.

Thank you for making clarifying the importance of the slick plate, I will certainly keep it. I might get a dream mat tray sometime to try it out. A lot of people are really liking them. I deal with a lot of fine gold so the conveyor may has been working well, but I would like to travel to some more gold bearing areas with it at some point. Thanks for watching, and for the advice!

When using the trommel, shouldn't the turbulence the material is already going through already be separating the heavies from lights before hitting the slick plate? I'm also curious about putting a dream mat on my slick plate, but you bring up a good point and I'm genuinely curious.
