FIRST TIME SHOOTING 35MM FILM | Yashica Electro 35 x Kokdak Gold 200

Фильм және анимация

I've been shooting 120 film for quite some time, but only now I got my hands on 35mm film camera. In this video I take Yashica Electro 35 GT to the sunny beach town - The Hague, to test the camera, and damn, photos turned out way better than I expected!

    I have a couple of favorites. One is the Olympus OM-4 for its spot metering system. The second is the Nikon F100 for its autofocus capability. In both cases, the cameras were used professionally for both commercial and news work.

    Just happened on your stream. I got a pristine GS model in 1998 after my father past. It was in a full Yashica camera case and came with the telephoto and wideangle conversion lenses with case. Being very involved in photography for since 1970, I asked my camera repair guys if it was worth keeping as I did not know anything about the camera being an Olympus SLR shooter. The repair guy said the lens was very sharp and it was definitely worth keeping. I got the door seals replaced and still shoot it to this day although I only load the camera with Tri-X, my favorite b&w film. Right now I shoot it without batteries as I try and relearn some old skills of judging light and adjusting the aperture to fit the default 1/500 sec shutter. Haven't sent the film to my lab yet (I sold my Nikon film scanner) so I don't know how I am doing yet.

Low and behold the first video that comes on is this and its shot in the hague, the very town I boguht it in. Uncanny. Another tip fr the battery is to use tinfoil formed into a cylindar under the A544 cell!

    So glad you finally ran a roll through this wonderful lil camera, been kinda awaiting this video ever since I saw this camera in one of your previous videos! And yeah the shutter is super silent, which is why I bought a rangefinder for my first film camera over an SLR coz you can just be a fly on the wall while shooting street! Also you did surprisingly great with nailing focus as a first timer shooting on a rf, did you enjoy focusing this way or do you prefer an SLR?

    Sup Siddhant! How you been buddy? I've been wanting to shoot this camera ever since I got it, but yeah, as I mentioned in the video, it was quite hard to find a battery for it, kinda sucks that in the end I solved the issue with a 5 minute walk to the closest store. 😄 And thank you man! 🙌🏼 I guess I do enjoy focusing more on a rf, because on my Mamiya I have reversed slr viewfinder and it's quite challenging to say the least. 😄 What camera are you using?

  • @DavidsKokainis

    @DavidsKokainis

    2 жыл бұрын

    Heyyy, thank you! If you have a battery for this camera, then you just have to set ISO rating and the camera will do the rest for you! For example to overexpose 1 stop for Kodak Gold 200, you will set ISO on camera 100, for Kodak Portra 400 you have to set 200 and for Kodak Portra 800 you have to set 400. I hope this makes sense 😅 Let me know if you need more info on this!

    Oh wow … very beautiful pictures. I’m new to film, did you change the iso on it when shooting the portrait with the red lights, or it was shot with the same 200 iso as per the film. Is it also at the lowest aperture? If you could you share abit of tips and tricks when shooting it would be great. 🙏

  • @DavidsKokainis

    @DavidsKokainis

    Thank you Andrew! To be honest, I don’t remember 😅 but I assume that I shot at the lowest aperture (f.1.7) and Kodak Gold 200 I always rate at 100 iso. I like how the photos turn out colour and exposure wise.

    i just found you channel by accident cuz yesterday i had bought myself yashica electro 35 gtn (my first rangefinder btw) and I was looking for videos reviewing this camera. I got to say i was really shocked about your story with film, I've never met anyone with even little bit similar story as you, glad to have you in film community. If I can give any advice, if you feel that there's something wrong with your winder or film please do not open your camera in the light cuz you may risk losing your shots. Just open it in the darkroom and then check the camera. And also I would highly recommend you to try some street photography on this bad boy, personally for portraits i much prefer regular 35mm SLR's, they are heavier but will give you more creative space belive me, dalmeter's are great for when you need to quickly make a photo, like for journalism or like I said, street photograpy, also yashica itself is an shutter priority only camera which on the long run will in some way limit you if you do portraits.

    Hey man, thank you for swinging by and giving some tips, I appreciate! 🙌🏼 Idk, it's just ever since I found out that medium cameras exist, I've been wanting to get one, but the biggest difference is the price tag, digital camera setup would cost me around 10-15k, where medium film camera setup costed me less than 1k. 😄 but yeah, so far I've been loving every aspect of shooting film! And you're absolutely right, me opening the back door in the light, with a stuck winder, might be one of the stupidest things I have done so far. Glad that I didn't had to learn the lesson in the hard way.😄 As I said in the video, I would like to use this camera on daily basis or when traveling, including some street photography and other things along the way, but yeah I see your point about this camera not being the greatest for portraits, it's quite inconsistent, I could take the same photo twice, but it would look slightly different in each shot. But I think I will still give it a try for a portrait shoot and compare it to 120 film, I mean, we already know the answer witch one will come on top, but I think it would be cool to compare both of them. 😄

    The problem with the original battery is that it contained mercury. Mercury is toxic. Millions of mercury batteries in landfills created environmental problems. Note that a 35mm negative is much smaller than a 120 negative. So, 120 allows a photographer to enlarge a print with more detail.
