I have a GSN and love it for street photography. Not only does it shoot great images but it’s a fantastic conversation starter. People love to have their photo taken with a beautiful classic camera. Thanks for all the videos. You help me a lot especially in the darkroom.

First time I did street with it years ago a guy stopped me thinking it was a Leica. He was fascinated in it. So you're quite right there Paul!

Gréât vidéo as usual Roger. You did really well in the darkroom with the shot of the car. The o.o.f. fence adds interest. I think the shot of the tyres would make a good print.

Thanks for another great nuts'n'bolts photography vid, especially the "physics and chemistry " parts. I have fixed MANY old cameras with battery dependency, by using a dowel with a DOT of fine sandpaper on the end of a dowel to lightly, clean the often inaccessible battery contacts.

I have been doing this exact same thing and it is so much fun being limited to this. I honestly take it everywhere now

Hey Roger, I had an Electro GSN and back when I used it there was some curfuffle about the battery being a mercury battery and how those weren’t allowed in the states. As a result these tended to be sold without the batteries. But, I bought an adapter for the battery bay that let me use different batteries. That adapter was like $15. I’m kicking myself for selling the camera with the adapter as this video reminds me of how much fun I had with my Yashica GSN.

I have one just like that, I had mine repaired. It wasn’t cheap, but I really like it. Then I found an identical one in a thrift shop, so it all evened out!

Roger ..thank you for sharing ...I used to pick up films from estate agents on Yamaha 125 .. and drop a dot matrix screen over the print ...for the local rag...then ended as photo technician for Butlins ...really enjoy the video...I got myself a Koroll24 Bencini..shoots roll ..but uses half frame ..only has one shutter speed 50th and f 11

I just picked one of these up locally - its apparently working, but the overexpose light is not lighting up, and they also have replaced the "pad of death" that is common on these camera's -- It's got a good lens apparently which works well when adapted to digital cameras

Nice one! The camera reminds me a lot of my Minolta Hi-Matic 7S. Same focal length and similar specs overall, and the price range is about the same too from what I can tell.

Also similar to the Olympus 35RD, from the reviews apparently the Minolta had the edge (a vey competitive period.)

Had some good shots using my Hi-Matic 7S. Great for infra red as it meters through the filter.

10:22 toxinsbmw is right. When I got mine the metering didn't work. I found a "how to" video in 5 minutes and fixed it easily. It's the cable what connects the battery to the electronics. It's not a big deal, and you can't ruin something that doesn't work. But you can bring it back to life and it feels great.

They get the pad of death issue also the bulbs can go on the battery check as there incandescent not led

1/500 sec. plus apertures from f/1.7-f/16 on a sunny day with Ilford HP5? Much better than 1/90 sec. or "Box camera seeds" of 1/20-1/60 sec. with an ISO 400 film.;) Maybe you should look at the SmartPhone "exposure meter" apps for those "Is it f/2 or f/4 in the shadows?" situations.

Almost certainly the battery terminal corroding off inside, very easy fix by someone else if you don't want to do it. Max shutter speed is quoted as 1/500th, in practice 50 years later it's anywhere between about 125 and 400 depending on how well the lubricants have lasted.

Hey, my GSN does't change aperture without the battery. what is the issue/

just got my yashica gsn yesterday and they're all fine except for the light meter😟 when i test it with correct aperture or making them overexposed both of the "slow" and "over" lights up no matter what

I have been gifted a yashica electro 35fc . I don't have a battery for it so doing the same but stuck at 1/1000 . I'll be shooting hp5 pushed a stop and sunny 16

Hey Roger. I love my Yashica Electro. Yours is even sharper in all black. You probably tried this but cleaning the battery compartment with a little alcohol may help ?? Mine had that issue.

I have the GSN version, still going strong. I got it as "needs repair" so I give it a go and made it work. Very simple cameras to work on if you want to have a go. Don't like them in the drak though, that rangefinder is very hard to see in dim light :/. Btw, where do you get those sleeves from? P.S. - And are you seriously scared of cows!? :D

Nice one on the bargain glad you repaired it! Sleeves I actually got hundreds from a closed school darkroom. And yes, Cows are big! I just think they gonna run at me!

Nice results from a knackered camera. It may be worth getting someone to take a look at it. If the cost is not too much, it maybe worth getting it repaired. The results of the combination of HP5 and Rodinal somehow reminded me of that 60s movie based on David Bailey, The Blow Up ( oops ). The photos have that kind of tonality and grain.

Blow Up. That's a crazy film. Yes I may get it looked at one day. Although they are reasonable for a working one online.

I got a GSN two months ago for just €15. The camera was battered pretty bad but I managed to fix most of the mechanical stuff in it. And when I finally made the battery adapter to test it... I realised that the meter still works, but the camera always takes the photos on bulb (no mater the mode I select). Does anyone knows a way to fix this? (I know almost nothing about electronics)

In a moment of madness a few years ago I bought a box of 10 or so broken yashica electro 35's !! I got a few working and sold the others off for parts. I think I also bought 1 or 2 more while I was waiting for the box to arrive !! So after selling a couple more that I got working I now have 4 fully functional electro 35's. They certainly do have a really sharp lens when you nail that focus. They're just not the most ergonomically designed camera I've ever used. When I feel like using a rangefinder I'll drag one out of the cupboard and stick a battery and a roll of film in it. I bloody love the results it gives but it's just a weird camera to use, for instance when you press the shutter release, depending on the exposure it will fire off at different stages each photo, so sometimes the shutter will release with just a gentle press and other times it won't fire until the button is almost near the end of the push if that makes sense. I believe it was the worlds first auto exposure camera though so we need to cut it a little slack !

You had some fortune there! When mine worked I would half push the shutter button and this strange static sound would come out the camera. Strange! Still a nice camera to use and as you say very sharp lens.

How Shutter speed without battery?

In fact even if the indicators light does not light up doesn't mean that the camera isn't working. The most important light is the red light. This is just an indication that the film is overexposed. The yellow light only means that the camera will shot at a low shutter speed (blurry picture). Thank you for the video. 🍻

Yes I believe the Electro is totally aperture priority so it will work out the correct shutter for you according the the light meter. If the light meter is not working properly you won't get correct exposures in which case take the batteries out and shoot. Without batteries I believe you can shoot at 1/500th of a second only. But take this and ask others see if they know any different.

Kill the headlights and put it in neutral. I was just given an Electro GS by a customer who inherited from someone deployed to Vietnam during the war. Mint condition just needs some attention.

Had the GTN, didn't like it unfortunately. No regrets selling it.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but does the camera make a loud thunk/clunk sound when you cock the shutter? It should make this noise. If it doesn't then you may have the "Pad of death" problem. The shutter button acts on a rod going down to the base plate of the camera. This rod activates the metering electrics (on half button press) via a tiny foam pad which eventually rots away and prevents the metering system from working. You can replace this pad yourself. I have a minty GTN that I don't use much because I prefer SLRs to Rangefinders but I really should try to love it more.

Sunny 16 is not very accurate or ideal as some believe. You'll get lucky here and there. It's guess work. Some days are much brighter than other days, same sun.

You and Neil Piper from the Soot and Whitewash Podcast need to get together. You have mutual reactions to the bovines!
