    I've watched a lot of Ugreen NASync reviews on KZread and found your review to be the most comprehensive since you included CPU benchmarks and comparisons to other competing NAS brands and models. You also talked about the 10G network performance limitations which no one else talked about. Lastly, you talked about the M.2 SSD potential thermal issues which I wasn't aware of but I don't think it will be a major problem. Thanks for all the new insights!

    They’ve supposedly added jumbo frame support in the latest OS update, but it takes some tinkering to actually make it happen, as it’s not in the menu. So I’m still not quite prepared to call this a true 10G connection just yet. A little frustrating.

    I have 2 networks in my home. 1 for the fiber in (has my Xbox, 2nd network, and security cameras) 1 from the fiber to my main home network. It's a mesh network so I have full coverage of my property. My question is, could I run an ether net cable to each network and it run on both? Right now only my main network sees my current Nas, te fiber one doesn't.

    Compared to Asustor uni that I use, love how easy it is to access RAM and M.2 slots. Would have liked to see a separate door for those with one for M.2 atleast having some fins to dissipate heat from M.2 drives.

    Great review! Can you please confirm if the users/groups you created to have access to a specific network shared smb folder really are the ones that only have access to it? Another reviewer of this NAS said that everyone on the network was able to access the network share smb folder despite him restricting the access to a specific user. It would also be nice to see on your review of this NAS the power consumption at idle, while in use, and max load. Another thing I would like to see are the temps of this CPU at those different work loads. I backed the 8-bay version and I'm planning to install TrueNAS when I get mine. The hardware specs is just hard to beat at the price UGreen currently offers on their Kickstarter page. 👍

  • @WesPerry

    @WesPerry

    2 ай бұрын

    Checked on it and the power consumption ranges between about 30W and 60W. It's really difficult to peg it at max load, due to the processor being highly dependent on boosting, and I don't think that I've ever fully taxed it. Intel lists the 8505 processor as having a max turbo boost of 55W on it's own, so I would guess that it's possible to go quite a bit higher, especially given that the power supply is 150W.

    @@WesPerry Thanks for the update! I guess they have fixed the user permissions. That's good! 30w-60w power draw isn't so bad too. I hope they work on the crappy thermal paste they used next. A German KZread review of this NAS showed the thermal paste used was not that good and replacing it lowered the temps to almost half. 😬

    So I’m a newbie to this sort of thing.. I’m looking for a more reliable source to store and backup all my data on my iMac (including some gaming files and cc) Do you think this is pretty easy to understand and suitable? I was told NAS is more reliable than an sdd or hdd. What’s the difference between the plus vs regular version I see on the site?

  • @WesPerry

    @WesPerry

    2 ай бұрын

    The plus gives you a much faster processor, support for more ram, and a 10Gb Ethernet port, while the regular one maxes at 2.5Gb This is one of the more user friendly models, but there is still definitely a learning curve in getting into NAS’s. You also have to fill it with drives. But overall you end up with safer data if you configure the drives as redundant raid arrays (which is the usual way of doing so).

    Feels like the Asustor 5404 is a far better choice with 4 nvme, 2x read/write and 2 in raid for hot storage/work drives.

    I had two weeks with it before the review was due, but thankfully I didn't encounter anything weird that I had to extensively troubleshoot, so my impression is pretty well rounded. I still have it on hand at the moment, awaiting further updates that will hopefully resolve the throughput issues I've had. I will update if and when that happens. If it does, this will Definitely be my pick. And now that they've opened up the way to let people run open source software on it, the other big NAS names really have a target on their backs. I'm not terribly interested in installing more complex software on it, though. My needs, though demanding great performance, are really quite simple. When I reviewed the Asustor 5404T, it ended up taking me TWO MONTHS to iron out all the niggling issues I was encountering before I could confidently make a review (much to Asustor's chagrin. oops!).

  • @coolcat23

    @coolcat23

    @DanielNeubauer At $700 I don't see this as a "no brainer". There are other NAS models which can be expanded with a 10Gbps card and have a lot more mature software. Have a look at other reviews of the UGREEN NAS and you'll see there is a lot more wrong with the current software than Wes shows here. On top of that, if you connect your NAS to the internet, security becomes very important and it is to be expected that UGREEN will need quite some time to reach the level of the best solutions available. I was initially very excited about a new player in the NAS market because it could do with better hardware and lower prices, but the non-Kickstarter price for the UGREEN model does not seem special to me and I would never have scored it 9/10, especially considering that the whole NAS is only as good as the software.

    I have the same thoughts. My two Synology NAS'es are running great. I have a 2-bay DS218+ and a 6-bay DS1621xs+. They are expensive but they're fast and very responsive. Most of all, I didn't encounter any issues since I started using them. I still backed the 8-bay UGreen NAS version though not as a replacement for my Synology NAS'es but as an extra media server. Those hardware specs is just too hard to pass. If their software is still not good when I get mine, I could always just install TrueNAS or unRAID. 💪

    Im just a bit confused. I'm not too familiar with high tech computer stuff like this. if this is just for alot of storage, why does it need the LAN, HDMI ports, Ram, CPU,etc.?

  • @WesPerry

    @WesPerry

    Ай бұрын

    The LAN is because the storage is accessed over the network it’s on (or can be set up to be remotely accessed over the internet, although I’d advice caution there), HDMI is so it can be used as a media server of sorts (which is the primary use case for Some people), ram is used for many things, such as caching data being accessed and modified, increasing speed, or running other applications, which leads us to cpu, which is the same. Other applications include installing virtualized systems or server stuff for automating things. Also having more ram and cpu will allow for more concurrent connections without lag, such as multi user work. As far as “server things” are concerned, there’s not a lot for that sort of thing in the current ugreen os, but other open source os’s can be installed to perform a wide variety of tasks. Also as mentioned in the video this has a more robust indexing and ai image sorting system that requires more power.

    I plan to configure my Ugreen NAS 6800 Pro as a Plex media server when it arrives. Having more powerful CPUs, memory capacity, and network speeds allows for better 4K video streams and transcoding from my personal movie library from full (non recompressed) Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray rips. This will eventually replace my Nvidia Shield Pro as my main Plex server.
