Another great song from the 70's. I remember this song when it was a big hit. Tony Orlando & Dawn had lots of songs such as "Candida", "Knock Three Times", "Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose", "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)", "Steppin' Out (Gonna Boogie Tonight)" etc.

"Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" was a number one hit in the US for Tony Orlando and Dawn in 1973. It was all over the radio back then. Listening to it now I'm surprised that a song about a convict getting out of prison could ever have been so popular in the land of tough on crime phonies. "Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose" was their next big hit. That's a fun one too. Check it out.
After this song was released. It became a custom when soldiers were coming home to the US. People and or towns would tie yellow ribbons around trees throughout the town.

Yeah, about 15 years after the song dropped, following the first Gulf War, aka Operation Desert Storm. But back in the seventies, when the song was new, most people wanted to forget the Vietnam War and everything associated with it, including veterans, disabled or not. That is what half the subtext of the Rambo movies was about.

The group was originally only known as Dawn. Then I guess the record company figured Tony needed to be the main person or something and then were known as Tony Orlando and Dawn. Their other big hit was Knock Three Times.

Oddly Tony Orlando was a music producer who wanted to be a singer but his contract would not allow for him to sing under his real name. So he had to make up a fake name to record under.
