This song got our entire neighborhood to tie yellow ribbons on all the trees on the streets because two of our neighborhood boys were coming home from Vietnam. One with no legs. We cheered and cried. This sing holds so many memories.

This song brings back fond memories of my childhood. Tony Orlando had a lot of charisma and Dawn added some extra spice to make his songs all the better.

Haha yes they were very young Thelma Hopkins known actress along with Joyce Vincent Wilson she had retired from the business. There meaning to the lyrics of the song it’s about a someone who has a love one serving in the U.S. Calvary. So to show their devotion tying yellow ribbon around the tree means how much they love that person good request chelly❤❤🔥🔥

I don't think anybody said this yet, but when the US embassy workers were taken hostage in Iran, this song was HUGE again, and probably every town in America had yellow ribbons on their trees for the hostages, who were held for 444 days between the end of 1979 and the beginning of 1981.

I love this song, my alltime favorite. Just a bit of info, Tony's dad is Greek and mom is Puerto Rican and he's still performing. The ribbon around the tree actually goes all the way back to the civil war. And it's funny because I just got done singing to this very video and your video came up,so here I am and I just subscribed

The album this song is from had a throwback 1920's feel to it, it was called "The New Ragtime Follies", and had two other million selling hits on it, "Say Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose", and "Who's In The Strawberry Patch With Sally". A brave move for a concept album, after their first 3 number one hits were basically latin flavored pop.

Yes because of this song people did put yellow ribbon around their trees when soldiers would come home from deployment. This lasted during the Vietnam war and the early part of the 1980’s. I still love this song. He is Puerto Rican. In the 1970’s his band was on a few variety tv shows and me (I was a young child) and my sisters thought he was simply gorgeous. The first Hispanic for us to see on USA television who spoke English like we did. We were in California and he was from New York but that didn’t matter. At that point he was In Hollywood making tv shows 😊. Years later he was touring across the country and played in Reno Nevada for new years and my dad also has a gig with his mariachi band at the same casino. Toni Orlando obviously knew how to speak Spanish but knew of us knew he could sing in Spanish. While my dad’s band was performing he went on the stage and asked my dad if he could join, my dad never says no. He did ask him if he knew all the words to the song Or would he need help and he told my dad no I think I can remember. All of this conversation was in Spanish because my dad’s English was really bad. So sure enough he sings. Now after he takes a picture with my dad and gives it to my dad. My dad when he comes back home to California a few days later, he is not into POP music had no idea Tony Orlando was a top 40 singer, just thought he was another casino singer. Didn’t know he was famous. So we are unpacking his stuff and see the picture and ask him about it. So he tells us about the song situation. There we are dumbfounded. Then we are screaming DADDY!!! You sang with tony Orlando you met him, we LOVE him !! My dad was just laughing. He said, well he was a nice guy. He has a good voice.

All of the ribbons you see for different causes on people's cars, lapels, dresses, etc ALL originated from this song. Yes people used to tie a yellow ribbon around their fence post, porch post or tree if they had a loved one in Vietnam back in the 70s, I still remember it being a teenager at the time.

Tony Orlando used to have his own variety show back in the early seventies. My Latina mother was in love with him. I was in love with that tall backup singer. She is just as beautiful as I remember her.

Dawn, the two females in the group, were also headlining on the variety show with Tony Orlando, it was a group show. In fact, Thelma Hopkins (Aunt Rachel on Family Matters) is one half of Dawn!

Yes. Many people still tie ribbons on trees. Even after deployment anywhere in the world. It became an overnight hit because it spoke of the times we lived in.

This song became quite an ear-worm back in the day when it was released. It was played so often on radio one couldn't get a way from it, then it was covered by "easy listening" orchestras and played as background music in every store.

You have to put yourself back in time. The song was actually about a man coming home from prison. Not able to make phone call. But because of when it came out (Viet Nam war era) it was taken to our hearts as a "returning from war" song. And you weren't listening to the story. If you had you would have felt the way we did back then. "Now the whole damn bus is cheering, and I can't believe I see, A HUNDRED YELLOW RIBBONS, round the old oak tree". Got goosebumps the first 1000 times I heard it. And depending on my mood, still can from time to time!!
