There's clearly a change that we've seen from this music to today's material that is labeled as music. Yesterday's artists inspire thoughts of hope, love and understanding in their music, whereas today's "music" inspires thoughts of sex, violence and hate. How far we've fallen.

This song was written by Paul McCartney. His mother, Mary, died of cancer when Paul was 14. In 1969, when the Beatles were going through a rough time with their business interests and musical direction, Paul had a dream where his mother visited him and told him that things will get better... and to "let it be." The song was emotional for Paul, and you obviously felt that emotion. Beautiful.

The timing of when it came out was everything. I was around 12-13 at the time, and had never heard anything like it, and it had a "church" feel to it. It blew my mind that these rock 'n roll hippie guys would do a church song, but at the same time you never knew what they were going to do next. The first time I heard it, was from the radio while we were getting ready for church on a Sunday morning, and it was that feeling of "man they outdid themselves again [they always seemed to do it with every new song - it was always something you never heard anything like, but it still had a familiarity to it, so you could like it the very first time you heard it]. After that I wanted to learn piano just so I could play it. In those days there were only records [no cassettes, 8 tracks etc], and I never had any money to buy them, so I had to rely on the radio to play stuff, which was so hit and miss, and I only got to hear the song once maybe every few weeks ....if I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. Everyone was 'high' on the song in the months & years after it came out. Once I finally got the 45 record, [years later] and listened it to death, I lost the 'high' it gave me. Even though I still love it, I can't get that original 'high' anymore. The flip side of the 45 was "You know my name [look up the number]" which was not on any album [at least for a few decade to come], and it also was unlike anything else they did, and showed their comedic side. Groovy days that will probably never come again.
