This one had me smiling the whole time. Today was my first time hearing David Gates and the band Bread. Not only are his vocals silky smooth, but the song "Make It with You" is such an endearing piece.

I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Everything I Own", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Diary", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender" & "Aubrey". In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".

David Gates mom is from Lyman, Wyoming. After his mom and dad married, Clarence Gates, moved his family back east so David's dad could teach music at the college level. They eventually settled in Oklahoma. David's maternal Rollins family come from Western cattle ranching and farming scratching out a living in the Bridger range of Wyoming... David's uncles and aunts were wonderful singers many moved into the professional college and sciences. I recall attending Rollins family reunions where they would gather around the piano and was so impressed and can still hear the rich tenors, baritones and sopranos and full voices of my great aunts and uncles singing together. It was a blast to attend Bread concerts in the 1970's. David's generation is fast slipping to the other side of life. David is the youngest of that generation. David and Jo Rita's children are very well grounded despite their Dad's hard fought eventual success in music. His children reside in the greater California area working in law, medicine and business. David and Jo Rita, now retired reside in the Pacific North West. I'm blessed to be an extended cousin and family member..

But Bread is an exception. The songwriting is so spot-on, the message so clear in a genre like easy listening, where so much is lost in the muck. Imagine in your mind an eighteen year old kid sharing a trailer off campus his freshman year of college (1989), and imagine music blaring out of that trailer, songs by Danzig, Slayer, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Violent Femmes,...and Bread. This is such a wonderful tune, and David's voice is always so smooth. I remember hearing songs from Bread all throughout the 1970s on the radio. Thanks for bringing back some great memories!

Notice that the oscillation in his voice is repeated regularly (even in the guitar solo) ... rhyming poetry in the music itself. Yes, he does have a large range. Songs like "If" will demonstrate the higher end. This is a fantastic and remarkably clear-eyed proposal song. Other favorites of mine are "Everything I Own", "Baby I'm-a Want You", and "The Guitar Man". Glen Campbell especially appreciated David Gates. Check out the duet they sang (in London, I think, but I'm not sure).

I used to play "Make It With You" when I was a street musician back in Dallas years ago. I've had 2 married couples come up to me, request this song, then tell me that I had played it for them way back on thier very first date.

I Love This...! I remember the day it aired. In my late 20's, friends and I would frequent The Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, California. For a few dollars we saw The Who, Janis Joplin, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young and many others. We could run up to Hollywood to The Whisky A Go Go, and see The Doors, Chicago, and others just getting their start. In Anaheim, California, we saw The Mamas and The Papas, with Simon and Garfunkel as their opening act. It was a crazy, wonderful, fun time. However, I truly think it was the calming music of Bread that led me to "Drop-Back-In" and settle down. I truly enjoy watching and listening to your reactions. Your comments are always right on point. Best wishes from an American living in Japan,

Thank you so much for listening to Bread--in particular, to David Gates. He had a number of hits, and deservedly so. From what I've read about him, it seems that he was as sweet as his voice was. I think he's in his early 80s now and still married.❤❤❤🎉

David Gates is a superb songwriter with a distinctive voice. Together with his band Bread, he put out a bunch of hits in the 70s. Yes, he hails from Tulsa, Oklahoma and is an incredibly likable and humble guy. This is a live version (no lip synch) that's very faithful to the album version. That's legendary session guitarist Dean Parks on the solo, too. If you want his most beautiful song, try "If", a song he dedicated to his father, if I recall correctly. Thanks, Bethany!

Beloved of the eternal, I don't understand your language, but nothing is needed to understand you, except through your eyes...that enjoy the blessed song that reaches our heart and conscience...we feel it through the song and its gestures and feelings that together we touch the supreme divinity... the eternal absolute that dwells in us...

I was hesitant to listen to a critique of David Gates' music because I didn't want to hear any disparaging remarks. Thank you for celebrating his beautiful voice along with so many of us from the 1970's music era. I'm so grateful we can still listen to David Gates and Bread today. And I'm grateful you recognized the beauty in his voice.
