All three members of the band were children of military families stationed overseas. As kids, they'd heard about this place called America, but hadn't ever been there. They reunited in the US as young adults, and formed a band. They remembered how fascinated they each were as children about a home land they weren't born in, and so named the band America.

Wrong> They did meet in england as sons of military parents, but actually started jamming in a garage, discovered they talent and from there lit up the 70' and beyond. Saw em live at a club touring in they were still tight and sounding like their recorded songs.

I would amen these choices. Only negative back then were the short song lengths, like Credence Clear Water Revival, were relatively short songs. Though later as technology grew, song lengths did as well.

@@Smittay-Sr. I don't think Led Zeppelin or the Who or The Moody Blues or... Well, there are a lot of bands 'back then' that didn't get that memo. If you were listening to radio-friendly versions, they were short, but then you haven't heard the whole songs in their entirety.

"Sister Golden Hair" was another great hit song, but their album tracks are wonderful, too. A lot of their lyrics are tough to figure out, but just enjoy the music and the feeling it gives you!

America got together in High School in England , sons of American service men over there. Their first album came out when they were just 19, and was so huge they had the money to move back home. Their 2nd album Homecoming details a lot of being back in America after many years, Ventura Highway is one of those.

The 60's-70's was an unbelievably rich era for music. The average listener routinely listened to far more different "genres" than today. That's because the genres were just forming. There are lots of deep, deep wells from which to pump inspiration. For folk rock like this try some Loving Spoonful, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills (and Nash and Young at various times), Carole King.

America is a rock band that was formed in London in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley. The trio met as sons of US Air Force personnel stationed in London, where they began performing live. Achieving significant popularity in the 1970s, the trio was famous for its close vocal harmonies and light acoustic folk rock sound. The band released a string of hit albums and singles, many of which found airplay on pop/soft rock stations. "Ventura Highway" is a 1972 song by the band America from their album Homecoming, written by Dewey Bunnell. Dewey Bunnell, the song's vocalist and writer, has said that the lyric "alligator lizards in the air" in the song is a reference to the shapes of clouds in the sky he saw in 1963 while his family was driving down the coast from Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc, California, where they had a flat tire. While his father changed the tire, his brother and he stood by the side of the road and watched the clouds and saw a road sign for "Ventura".

Others that may not have been requested: Atlanta Rhythm Section, Flying Burrito Brothers, Foghat, Mott the Hoople. Love what your doing with Woodstock. It was a very important time in history, both musical and societal, and it was far reaching. I wasn't there, but I lived during the time (72 yo). Ever have any questions, feel free to ask.

As an Australian, America were huge in Australia 70s and 80s. Even their later music was melodic and beautiful. Cast The Spirit - The Border came out later. Horse With No Name is legendary. Little River Band were Australia's answer to America and every bit as good.

I lived this song. My name is Joe I was in my late teens, a long haired kid hitch hiking Ventura highway, LA to SF when this song came out. In the summer time, just a hippie kid out on life’s adventure, jumping into cars with strangers and taking my chances. Meeting cute young girls and scary old strangers. Going from this song to riders in the storm. Never knowing if you were going to get laid or be killed. Ventura highway

"America" was a massive super group starting in the late sixties through the early 80s. This is a good find for you. They have beautiful songs and great themes of peace and good feeling. They continued to tour and produce music through 2000 ... at least as I can remember ...

SO great to see you, young, beautiful people, react to the classics. When I started singing, around 5, I was Hooked On Harmony, not phonics. HA! 58 now, still in a band. Your realization of the sampled hook line was priceless! Much love, from NC! Peace

I adore your guy’s approach and opens to music, the universal language. You expose me me old classy and new stuff and as we discovered here the melding on generations. Janet’s song is awesome and it could imagine it without the guitar riff samplings. Blessings

This song was released in 1972. (my jr year of hs) America has a great catalog and is a wonderful rabbit hole to travel down. And as far as getting emotional, I've found this. Now that I'm old and my arms are all crepey, I don't get goosebumps from music anymore. But it makes my eyeballs sweat, even when it's not sad. lol

Took music appreciation in college and the professor said one song should always remind you of another.
