I was 9 in 1968, my husband was 11. And he remembers that when he was out shopping with his whenever Hey Jude over a stores speakers everyone just stopped in their tracks to listen. I know when I was a teenager it had its own listening protocol. When it came on the radio everyone shut up and gave the volume control a quick turn to the right. But when they got to the fadeout, we sang with it at the top of our lungs.🧓💋

And the world joined in. Yes, indeed they did. It just cannot be overestimated how much they meant in the 60’s. Culturally, musically, stylistically, everything. They not only were a huge part of it all, they were at the forefront of it all.

We needed the Beatles to counter some of the awful things that happened in that decade. We lost Martin Luther King Jr and two Kennedy brothers, all three to assassins! Even back then there were too many guns in the hands of evil people. And then less than twenty years later we lost our dear John Lennon to another gunman. 😢

This song acknowledges sorrow and difficulty, it doesn’t dismiss it, but it’s also encouraging and forward looking: yes, life can be painful, but know this moment will pass and there are good things ahead for you. I’ve said this many times - if the very first time you hear a song, you want to sing along and you CAN! that’s a sure-fire sign of songwriting genius. (This was true of Bob Marley too) ❤️

It's part live/part studio. There's his live vocal take and buried in the background the studio vocal take very very low. The background vocals are from the studio track (except when Lennon sing along live the last verse). It's amazing to see the 18yo of 1968 all jammin together, so iconic!

Danny Trejo, the actor, recalled the first time he heard "Hey Jude". He was sitting in prison and a radio station was being broadcast over the intercom. He claims the prison went crazy with hooting and hollering by the inmates when they heard it. I can see why prisoners might be inspired by such a positive song.

A couple of years ago this master work by The Beatles surpassed "Dancing Queen" as the most requested, played, and celebrated song in Rock History. Paul dedicated it to John's son Julian, who was grieving over the split of his mom and dad. Whenever I hear it, I stop what I'm doing until it ends -- and there is my only criticism ... I simply wish the ending refrain would have lasted another five minutes. BEATLES = Best Group EVER

Your point about the literal meaning (among many) making the first part of a "sad" (you meant the tune not the meaning) song and making it better (Na na na na na na) was not lost on me. It is an uplifting song. Can you see the Paul voice from this and relate it to the Back Seat of My Car and Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five? If you ever were to do the Beatles as a complete set you would need to start in the beginning and grow with them. Their early raw rock until their last album, Abbey Road, is a journey. But do not skip the singles between albums. This is an evolution. Anyway, this was one of your best reviews in my opinion.

Beatles always goofed off a bit with their songs live- we loved it! You’re right on the “ melancholy” as Paul wrote this for John’s son , Julian. John dumped Julian’s mum, Cynthia for Yoko Ono. 🤮 This was the 60’s and they were all in their 20’s.
