"when I die, I'll be immortal" may also be a reference to the fact that many of the fallens bodies are preserved in the ice from the avalanches. In a way their bodies are immortal, and iirc it's believed that many are still buried under the snow. I remember in 2014 there were some mummified bodies of WW1 soldiers discovered in the Alps as glaciers began to melt.

I have an enormous amount of respect for Sabaton and their approach to honoring the soldiers throughout history. The battle the song is referencing was in the Alps between Austrian and Italian soldiers. They were both dug in pretty good and neither side was making much progress. Then someone realized that instead of trying to hit the enemy troops with artillery it was much easier to just attack the mountain above them and bury them in an avalanche. Both sides employed this tactic and it worked very well. That's where the line "white friday" in the song comes from. Most of the soldiers on both sides that died are still buried on the mountain.

History is a morbidly and/or beautiful thing we really need to learn beyond our own lenses that our nations show us. It shows the bigger picture of how history is everywhere. There a quote saying "those who dont learn from history are bound to repeat them and reap the consequences" Sabaton is a prime beacon of showing us from the shadows more history that goes beyond the textbooks. Trully amazing band for the ages. !!!

I've been reading a lot lately about one of the darkest parts of history (The Gulag Archipelago), and I definitely agree. China doesn't seem to have taken that lesson to heart. But we still can, and we need to learn much more about history than school taught us. I've learned more in a few months of personal studying than I ever got from school. We all should go way beyond a few classes.

The greatest mark of any music is the emotions it invokes within a person. Sadness, anger, fear, and so on. Sabaton is one of the few bands that incorporates such values firmly into their lyricism while telling a forgotten story. Showing not only the words spoken, but the emotions of those who lived those moments, and final moments. A story, or stories, meant to shake a person to their core. That, is truly what music, and indeed this song, is about.

Sabaton has mastered the art of telling a story through power-metal, and many of their songs evoke strong emotional responses. If you are looking for more Sabaton songs, I would suggest the following (depending on your mood): Dark/sad songs (will make you feel strong negative emotions): "Fields of Verdun" "Inmate 4859" - increadibly dark "Attack of the Dead Men" - increadibly dark "To Hell and Back" "A Lifetime of War" "Price of a Mile Uplifting/Heroic (While these songs may not always have a positive end, they give strong positive emotions): "The Red Baron" "82nd All the Way" "The Ballad of Bull" - uplifting ballad "Resist and Bite" "Smoking Snakes" "Screaming Eagles" "Aces In Exile" "Union (Slopes of St. Benedict)"

Glad to see this song. Some of their older ones are also fantastic about talking about events and people that aren't often talked about. Hell and Back, Attack Of The Dead Men, Uprising, Resist And Bite, No Bullets Fly, and Nightwitches are a few in that vein that would really be great. For No Bullets Fly and Nightwitches I highly recommend the animated video versions that include the actual history behind the songs. Those are separate from just the animated videos, and I believe are around 8-10 minutes long instead of the length of the song.

It's really hard to go wrong with Sabaton. I'd suggest The Last Stand, Winged Hussars, and Swedish Pagans. Slightly different but I'd also suggest looking at Van Canto performing Sabaton's Prima Victoria. Van Canto is a mostly a capella group, (they do have an actual drummer), but it's an entertaining cover, Joakim from Sabaton also joins them in performing the song.

3:30: This line has actually a quite literal sense: There are still dead soldiers found in the alps, who mummified in the mountains.

This song never fails to make me fight with tears and I love that it was made I am also proud and sad to live in Austria, which was along with Italy themed in that song... Blood Mountain was one of the most horrifying places to be in 1916 and I feel sorry for all the poor Austro-Hungarian and Italian Soldiers that lost their lifes not just to the enemy but in that case also the Nature I really am happy to live in an Country branded by history so much, especially from 1800 - 1950

My 2x Great Grandfather died 9 days into the battle of the Somme. He kept his bible with him and when he died it was brought back, I ended up being the one who kept it. In the bible It looks like he wrote in some parts of it... one quote I could make out was "Dear Lord help us to come nearer to thee day by day, Amen" Then on the 9th July 1916 he got shot and died from blood loss. My Great Grandma was 5 years old when her father died in the Battle. He was 39 years old. He left 8 children behind and a wife.

I firmly hold that Sabaton is fulfilling the role the Skalds held in the old days. They carry on the stories of the heroes known and unknown, and make sure no tale worth telling is ignored. Whenever you read in a story the line, "They will sing of this day!"...Sabaton shows why that is a good thing!

Yayy Sabaton 🇸🇪:) You should react Christmas Truce. It's about how the soldiers in the trenches celebrated Christmas together and stopped firing at each other during WW1. It's beautiful and so so sad.

Some more facts, both sides fired shells into weakened snowpacks to cause an avalanche. On Wednesday, December 13, 1916, at 5:30 a.m., over 200,000 tons were plunged down by detonating 5000 tons of Nitro-Gelatine onto Austro-Hungarian barracks. In the night of the same day another avalanche struck the Italians overrunning their mountain barracks. In the aftermath of White Friday 10 000 soldiers on all sides were killed by avalanches.

It's very messed up that so many stories don't get told in our history just because of where these events took place. The most I remember about WWI in history class is that it happened before the rouring 20's. It took me stumbling across this band to continue learning about The Great War and I'm thankful for it. Keep up the journey my metal sister, I enjoy cheering your growth.

White Friday was an event in WW1, The Austro-Hungarians were facing off against the Italian army in the mountains that bordered the two countries, the Alps.; One side apparently fired shells into snowpacks above the battlefield. No one knows for sure what side, as they all were buried inside the massive avalanche that ensued. All we know is it happened, we don't know a whole lot about the details.

My own take on "When I die, I'll be immortal" is that when they die in the mountains, their bodies stay forever. Over 100 years have passed and World War 1 soldiers are still there, lost in time, bodies preserved.

That drum beat (if I remember correctly) also matches the matching rhythm of a select few military units that deliberately take slower strides when marching in formation I make a great impression while taking those strides longer to keep up with other matching units in parades

“Soldier of Heaven” Tells the story of soldiers who froze to death in the alps during WWI. Some of the bodies are still there frozen in the alps today. Thats why they sing " I’m sky high, when I die I’ll be immortal".

Sabaton does do an amazing job at telling incredible stories of not only famous events and groups of people in history, but the true gold is in them honoring the often forgotten few and tragedies of war. Here is the reason you and many others all over the world don't get to learn these pointed topics in history, because each continent, nation, state, province are given history in a certain format to focus on one grand aspect in a multitude of key points amongst a large variety of major elements, which includes physical, psychological, ideological, religious, dynistic and cultural elements. All this is why education focued primarily on history is so intricate and why it varies from country to country and in some instances cultures, this makes teaching history complex and what makes it one of the most difficult topics to cover in it's entry. Where one country would look at the propaganda aspects of one war or period, where they would focus of ethics of another. And the topics of one might be switched for a different reason in other countries. But it is amazing to see people who need liked or had interest in history, taking the time to do tge smallest amount of research. History is easily one of the most underrated fields of education there is and one if not the oldest form of education and due to that, there are many paths in education which has be established upon historical studies, research and documentation. Also getting mad at those in history despite the circumstances is foolish, because the root of the actions and decisions they made are either due to their ethical disposition or the fact that nobody has done it before them, so there was no tamplate or lesson to be learned from apart from the mistakes that was made during the pioneer's actions. For you can't learn from mistakes if there was no mistakes to learn from. That is essentially the purpose of history and human documentation, is to learn from what we have done wrong and what we have done right, then to take the lessons learned and carry them through our actions through life. Thats also why it is incredibly half-assed to state that religion is the primary for war; in some wars it is groups of the same religion fighting one another, then another group would come and would say, "that is why nations should not exist and neither should humans"; those groups tend not to take into account, that nature would be in complete disrepair without us, because far more species would die out, because not only is nature in a delicate balance since we stepped onto the world stage, but far before we came along species was dying out at a far more rapid pace. Many more fauna are still alive due to us doing our best to keep them alive. And if you look to history, we only recently reached a point in our existence as partial to fully cognitive organism where we are no longer battling against nature, competing to serve, but we are thriving, compared to where we where 4 million years ago. Hopefully Aileen, that makes a little more sense as to why many people shy away from getting into history, especially in school.
