Great choice, S! The Drifters were one of the best doo-wop groups that were popular in the '50s and kept going and going and going! This song was released in 1964 -- a time when the Atlantic coast beaches of the U.S. still offered a carefree, low-cost summertime experience. For those beach-going teens+ who were flat broke, there was always the "underwood hotel"! You & your honey found an unused spot and spread your blanket -- "(Under the boardwalk) out of the sun (Under the boardwalk) we'll be havin' some fun (Under the boardwalk) people walking above (Under the boardwalk) we'll be making love Under the boardwalk, boardwalk!"

The Drifters were one of the early 50's doo-wop R&B groups. They had a lot of great songs such as "There Goes My Baby", "Save The Last Dance For Me", "This Magic Moment", "Some Kind Of Wonderful", "Please Stay", "Up On The Roof", "On Broadway". Ben E. King was in the group at one time but left for a solo career in the 60's. He had big hits with "Stand By Me" & "Spanish Harlem".

As some have pointed out (observedly) there are two versions of this classic tune. In one version (this one) the lyrics state "we'll be falling in love...", and in the alternate version of lyrics, they say "we'll be making love..."". I think the "tamer" lyrics were used back in the day on radio stations that were afraid of the censors (or parents who didn't want their kids to hear references to making out!)

I've always loved the Drifters - they had sooo many good songs. When I was a kid this song totally confused me 'cuz the only boardwalks in my city were flush with the ground! I couldn't figure out how someone could be 'under the boardwalk' without digging a hole (LOL). Thanks for playing this.

3 Dog Night has a song that I love ❤️. Believe me it’s not a Christmas song. Joy to the World.

A lot of folks will have memories about "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." It was originally in a movie, way back in the '30s or so. But the 1958 release by The Platters is the go-to version. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJp2xNF7qpbfn8Y.html

Great reaction, Samantha! There is a whole genre of music called “Beach Music” which began in North Carolina and South Carolina that is still very popular. There’s even a dance style associated with it, the Shag. You can find a lot of choices by searching for Carolina Beach Music on KZread but my personal favorite is Carolina Girls by General Johnson and The Chairmen of the Board. If you’d like to see an example of the Shag, there are tutorial videos on KZread as well.

Also listen to a great summer song by The Supremes ''Where Did Our Love Go'' from 1964.

I think that you would go "under the boardwalk" if you were going with your significant other or sweetheart-that's the message of the song, not implying that someone is going by themself or with a total stranger. Who would do that anyway?

This recording said “We’ll be falling in love” all three times in the chorus. I could swear the one I’ve heard most changed the line to “We’ll be making love” on the second or third time.
