Lovebites brilliant great reaction , The base player and drummer are the founding members they were in the same band Destrose which disbanded . There influences are in retro metal such as Iron Maiden , Judas Priest , Hallowell and Dragon force whom they have toured with . I heard in an interview they describe their skilss as the drummer having played from a very young age , the base player wants to play like iron maidens base player, the guitarist was learning classical piano but discoverdcguitar in her early teens but still plays piano on stage sometimes both at the same time and the other guitarist is a mad shredder the vocalists comes from an R&B background and this is her first experience with heavy metal. Some more titles When Destinies Align, the crusade, Rising, there are a couple of live vids lovebites summer sonic . Lovebites, live at Wacken 2018 are the best sound and picture quality as these are not crowd shot.

This was great. The drums are the star of this show for me. They drive this forward relentlessly and produce the illusion of speed for the rest of the band. During a good bit of the song, the instrumentalists are just passengers in the drummer's race car. At its essence, during those sections of the song, they're playing a progression of whole note chords. The wonderful twin solos stand out all the more because of the simplicity of the rest of the song. Those solos are going to represent a ridiculous amount of shared rehearsal to fully synch for live performances. Much respect. The music of Japan is a new world for me and there are bands who are just KILLING it over there.

@@ChrisPage68 I understand where you're coming from, was only describing a section of the song. :-) My mind envisioned speeding down a highway with a powered model plane in hand. Once launched forward, the plane (the twin guitar leads) soar upwards with the energy of both the plane's engine and the speed of the car (rhythm section). Really interesting stuff.

@Tim Gove already provided "the novel" as he called it, so just a little historical background. Miho (bass) and Haruna (drums) were part of the legendary heavy metal band Destrose, whose alumni have founded at least 6 or 7 all-girl metal bands over the years (you'll get requests for all of them at some point!) They wanted something more challenging than straight metal, so they founded Lovebites and recruited the two guitarists and then the vocalist. To answer one of your surmises: Yes, all of the girls are classically trained, as are most of the members of Band-maid and many other top groups. Formal music education is a requirement in Japanese elementary and secondary schools, and many Japanese take further training at the college level. Haruna is 4'9" tall, uses heavy gauge drumsticks, and has been called a "pocket nuke". You'll notice that, like Akane of Band-Maid, she smiles a lot as she plays. Miho is sometimes underrated because she's understated compared with the flash of the guitarists, but she's the soul of the band. I think a strong back line is the key to a really enduringly great band, and they've got that in spades. And then, the guitarists! Midori played mostly in straight-ahead metal bands before joining Lovebites; she usually has a clean, bell-like tone, and is a consummate shredder. Miyako's previous bands were death-metal bands; she also has a strong jazz and funk background (she also does most of the composing, and a lot of the keyboard work on their albums). Her tone is dirtier and more distorted, and she uses more pinch harmonics and tapping than Midori. The result, when they duel or harmonize, is an amazingly rich sound. Oh, I could go on....Thank you for doing this!

It’s actually specifically Haruna’s trademark, used in both bands. They stand out in silhouette distinctively, and she has her own personal merch, crafts sales, T-shirts featuring the stars, to be sold with online seminars and such. Branding baby, it’s a business, work every day. You don’t play Wacken after just a year without being prepped, they are a targeted machine, and the target is Birmingham. Only one of them drinks alcohol apart from holidays, gotta keep your fighting weight! (It’s 5oclock somewhere, kanpai!🍻)

About former musical education, you're right: Miyako (the Dean guitarplayer who's sweeping) has been trained to classical piano since early childhood (and still play wonderfully, sometimes on stage - I even saw her playing the guitar with one hand and the piano with the other). Influenced by Rachmaninov and Chopin, as well as Gary Moore and many others. She's Lovebites main composer.

Well, studio version have an impecable mix and engineering, because it was mixed by Mikko Karmila and mastered by Mika Jussila in a finish studio. The same people who work with Stratovarius, Nightwish, Sonata Artica and a lot more groups, so the work it´s really very good. Lovebytes in live are also really good but of course the differences are mostly on the technical side. It´s difficult to mix a live performance like those people do in a studio And yes, they tour sometimes with Dragonforce. There´s even an hilarious part in one of their concerts when they go on the stage and after present all the members, appears Herman Lee in a white dress as "the lost member of Lovebites". Yes, Herman Lee is a boy but like he says "they are occidental people, can´t tell the difference" The punk reference reminds me a really, really good also from Japan, also all female and possibly the oldest still active in the country: Shonen Knife. A punk-rock band from Osaka founded in 1981 and still active. They have play all around the world in small venues (but really prestigious ones) like the famous Bataclan in France. The singer is now about 59 years and still rocking on stage. They do really fun music. Simple but fun. Must try someday Here an example kzread.info/dash/bejne/m5qnsdGbZ662k7w.html Curt Kobain loves them 🤘 Oh, and someday you must see some playing Mikio Fujioka. He was a guitar player in the "Kami Band" (Babymetal). Sadly he died 2018 but he was a true master of guitar (teacher for profesional players and author of many book of music theory). He play a lot using the tremolo arm. Just see here kzread.info/dash/bejne/e4tr15ulpdm9Y7A.html This is a promotion video of EPS where Mikio play some pieces, really nice

Asami the vocalist was a R&B singer before this. The bands name comes the song of the same name by Halestorm. Asami and Lzzy of Halestorm performed live together on stage while touring together. Miho the bassist and Haruna the drummer have been together since their days in Destrose. Destrose has several spin off groups including this one. Fate Gear, Mary's Blood and Mardeles. All of which are very good as well. The drums are a signature of Haruna's with the star cymbals. She has had them ever since her days in Destrose. Miya the guitarist without the highlights in her hair. plays keyboard and sings backup vocals. She is so good that she looks almost bored while playing. She has also given guitar lessons, hint, hint. Miya and Midori were showcased at a couple guitar maker booths at NAMM in L.A earlier this year. Lovebites has won at least award and placed very high on heavy metal ratings lists. Lovebites has toured at several venues inside and outside Japan. Mostly in Europe. They have yet to tour the USA, but I think their time has come. They work very hard at their craft.

One of my favorites! Both their first and third albums are great in my opinion. The singers style took some time to get used to for me, I think the throatiness might be a result of her singing in English? Wild speculation. As for live stuff it's a bit hard to find since they haven't released any official live videos on KZread as far as I know. Their live DVD pops up every now and then but is usually (and rightly so) taken down again. When Destinies Align is another great track, from their third album (this is from the first), but there's only a normal video for that one. If you're interested in another great Japanese band in the same genre (there's loads of them) Unlucky Morpheus is great. I think you would appreciate the composition of the song(s) Cadaver/Revadac.

Love these ladies, great review, glad you enjoyed. Bassist Miho called her former drummer Haruna and said “we need to recreate classic thrash and powermetal, fully respecting European originators and all in English”. Done. Haruna is a 4’9” powerhouse. Miyako on the Dean is a classical pianist who likes electro-death metal and Gary Moore, she’s also become their main songwriter, passing Miho’s thrash and studio 6th member keyboardist Mao’s symphonic prog. Midori on the ESP is outrageously technically good, 8 finger tapping, clean speed for days, string skipping, super high whammies harmonics... they both sweep but Miyako’s 3strings, tho the arpeggios made your jaw drop, are still mortal, Midori’s full guitar stuff is not. And then there’s the song where the harmonized lead they both play with overhanded tapping. Show offs. Oh, they started guitar at ages 18 & 20, so Miyako had only 8-9 years experience when she recorded this (I don’t know Midori’s age.) Singer Asami was a pro chorus girl in rock bands, and likes R&B & Soul (Mariah Carey?), but was always told her power should front a rock band. Careful, some of my fav dvd tracks have been taken down, tho probably pausing during review like you do will do the trick. Song “Epilogue” live is still up, power ballad, was hoping for Empty Daydream or End of the World tho. And the thrash songs (Hammer of Wrath, Break the Wall) are either down or poor recordings. So instead, this is another blaster w dual guitars, their bread n butter, “We the United” live, often their set closer. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lHuOqtKxgrGwmps.html As you check their live stuff, keep in mind they’ve only been playing live 2.5yrs, whilst putting out over 40 songs, their shows have definitely gotten better. There are at least two full sets (5 songs each?) that are pro shot; Wacken 2018 and Summer Sonic 2019, simple “lovebites live” KZread search found em, each about 30mins

Don't feel bad; I have the exact same take. They're clearly very good musicians, but their songwriting just doesn't click with me. I also must confess, I don't particular care for the singer's vocal style. She has power, but she seems to stay in the same dynamic range all the time. It might be because all their lyrics are in English and it makes it harder for her to connect her performance to the content of what she's singing...? I'm not sure, there's just a little something missing for me in it.

I believe this is true of Miyako (the guitarist on the far left in this video). She was classically trained since age 3 with piano and specialized in the works of Rachmaninoff. Incredibly, she didn't pick up the guitar until age 18 when she was in college, and she taught herself from a guitar-instruction book series! Shortly after college she joined the bands: A Drop of Joker (2013) and 21g (2014)--neither of which gave her much challenge or opportunity to shine (imo). She was the last member to officially join the band (2017) and I think it was Miho (Lovebites' founder, leader and bassist) who wanted Miyako in the band to balance out Midori's (guitarist on the far right in this video) more aggressive style. Prior to joining Lovebites in 2016, Midori was already a contracted session guitarist who had earned a reputation for her incredibly fast soloing skills. So I think in Midori's case, she was already well versed in power-metal but just wanted to put down her roots in a good, creative band like Lovebites. Either way, Midori and Miyako are truly great combo.

Sooooo glad you reacted to this one! This was the first song I heard from Lovebites and it just blew me away. I looked them up and watched all their other promo videos then instantly ordered all their albums and the most recent of their EPs (and now their new single, which features new tracks). They're my favourite new band discovery in the last 15, maybe 20 years. I would strongly recommend their official video for the song Rising if you want to try more. As for Dragonforce... Lovebites supported them in the UK last year. Wish I'd known about them then... Anyway. Live. Maybe try Wacken 2018, it probably has a better sound mix than most live videos currently available. I'd recommend The Crusade, which starts here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4yFkrKjf67TeNo.html or you can just go from the start of the concert with The Hammer of Wrath kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4yFkrKjf67TeNo.html. It's Helloween’s 1987 album Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part I and its 1988 sequel, …Part II that can be said to have kick started the power metal genre, including machine gun style drumming; however power metal can be traced back to the 1st few Rainbow albums where Richie Blackmore welded the influence of Middle European classical composers Beethoven and Bach to the amplified power of hard rock.

Chase, I have included a link to a band I have not see you react to, yet. I looked through your videos list, but that's is, so if you have reviewed/reacted to them you have my apologies. With that said, I would like to introduce you to Wagaki Band, I think this is the first video I watched, but it's been a day or two. Here's the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqOitsR9dLC_mto.html This is another Japanese rock band, with a few metal elements. The unique thing about this band is they are a fusion of Contemporary and Traditional Japanese instrumentation. If you are not familiar: The Traditional instruments include: Daiko Drums, a Bamboo flute (forgot the actual name), the Koto (horizontal harp-like thing), and the Shamisen (3 string banjo looking thing) I am still learning the performers names but here's what I believe I know: contemporary: Drums: Wasabi; Lead guitar, Machia; Bass, Asa (looks like a girl, but IS a guy); Traditional: Koto, ?; Daiko drums, ?; Bamboo Flute, ?; Shamisen, Beni; and last but not least: Vocals: Suzhanna is lead vocals, Machia is 2nd vocals, Asa does some vocals but normally almost imperceptible, at least to me. Occasionally Machia will wear a mask used in the Japanese theater called "Noe" and when he does, you will see movement that is associated with that art. Now, for the most racist statement I have published to date: I believe they have ALL had some formal martial arts training, I assume this from movements and other videos I have watched. The link above is a pair of songs: the first is actually instrumental and titled, "Homura", the 2nd is "Akatsuki no ito", which is sung by both Suzhanna and Machia. I hope you enjoy this performance as much I have have and will continue to do.

Just stumbled upon this channel today and spent the last couple hours with your vids. Great work! Since you so far exclusively reviewed some of Lovebites' more speedy / thrashy numbers I think it would make sense at some of their melodic numbers with my personal favorites being: Empty Daydream kzread.info/dash/bejne/noycwdeGfZyamrg.html A Frozen Serenade kzread.info/dash/bejne/eodq1tGqnq6ZaJc.html The former particularly shows off Miyako's diversity in not only providing stellar guitar work, but also her ability in playing the piano and singing backing vocals. I can promise you some serious goosebumps with this one! The latter is probably my favorite Lovebites-song due to its drop dead gorgeous guitar solos in the last third. Sadly they haven't played it live yet afaik so this vid features only the song by itself. Be sure to check those out.

I'm reading the lyrics as I watch your video here and I'm thinking that they composed the English lyrics from a translation of the Japanese lyrics because the cadence of the sung vocals do not quite line up with normal native English vocals, if you know what I mean. Plus you can tell the vocalist is singing in English with Japanese mouth accent motion. Meaning that words which are usually sung in a loud clear way, such as long E sounding words are subdued and truncated with this vocalist.
