These were Hobo's who during the depression rode the box cars around the country looking for work to eat or have a place to sleep. They were the Kings of the Road, successfully unsuccessful.

My grandfather did this for a few years. I always think of him when I hear this and wish I had been old enough to get stories from him. Apparently he rarely discussed it with my mom. Oh well.

Exactly, I wish it were made clear to people. Hobos were people that travelled from town to town to work....not to be confused with modern day bums.

I love Randy Travis’ voice. One of the greatest country singers.

Man, oh man, do I miss Roger Miller! Roger's version of this classic has to have been one of the most popular country songs of the 1960s. And thanks to Roger's inimitable voice, it had a great crossover following as well. Roger was the first person who taught us all that you can't roller skate in a buffalo herd. And btw Britt, a "man of means" is a person with a little jingle in his jeans to buy the things he needs. A "man of means by no means" is a guy whose jeans are jingle-less. Hope that helps.

I was fortunate enough to see Randy Travis when he was just starting out at our little county fair. I'll never forget just how his voice thrilled everyone who was in attendance. The venue was small but back in those days whenever someone played at our small fair it would be packed full because we were so grateful to have live music. I hadn't heard much of his music but I became a fan instantly buying his albums with my babysitting money. ❤

Randy and Josh also combine to do Randy's song "Three Wooden Crosses" and Josh's song "Long Black Train". 😃❤️👍🏼

nice to hear Roger Miller being remembered. I loved his novelty songs when I was kid! A good one to try would be Whistle Stop, it is the most likely to be recognized.

"Honey on a Hot Biskit Voice" lol I've heard Randy's Voice described alot of ways, but that will stand out in My mind forever lol and if you liked this song you should hear the Original by Rodger Miller

They also teamed up to do one of Randy's big hits "Forever and Ever, Amen". Sadly, Randy is mostly confined to a wheelchair and as a result of his stroke developed aphasia which makes if difficult to communicate.

Old school country forms a classic base for the genre but I for one feel the same spirit in much of contemporary country (home, heart and soul...via storytelling). Its all good if you enjoy it, there's no reason to be divisive or defensive about any music really. We enjoy what we enjoy, no right or wrong to it.

The original singer of this song is Roger Miller. He reminds me of a country artist version of Robin Williams. He's quirky, and actually kinda looks like Robin Williams.. But he was before Robin Williams. He also played the rooster, and was the narrator, and made the soundtrack for the classic Disney animation of Robin Hood, with the animal characters.. Another song by him: You Can't Rollerskate in a Buffalo Herd.

A SC and NC set of legendary voices combining to cover a truly masterful songwriter. Sitting in Upstate, SC i have loved this song since before this version was released. This one is another level.

I think the ‘I am a man of means, by no means’, is saying he is NOT a man of means. Because he is a hobo just drifting along. This is a very old song. I remember it from when I was a very young girl. Randy would have been very young g when this song came out and Josh would not have even been born yet. I think this song came out sometime in the early or mid 1960’s. I loved singing along with it on the radio. Roger Miller was the artist. And maybe wrote it?

My all time favorite

Randy Travis did a fabulous version of Jingle Bell Rock for a Christmas album promoting the Special Olympics. It is one of my favorites. He is a phenomenal talent! There aren't many who could keep up with him vocally, but Josh Turner is one of them. Just Wow! If you want some swoon-worthy songs by Josh, check out Your Man, Would You Go With Me, Soulmate, or The Longer the Waiting The Sweeter The Kiss. He is a happily married good Christian man, but that doesn't mean he isn't smoking hot, or that he doesn't belong in the PDC. My sister and some of my friends about lost their minds when they heard him sing. Me too!

Roger Miller was a lyrical genius. "A man of means by no means"....is such a deep line. He's saying that he's rich but doing it without money. He's also saying he's broke. (Reread the line several times and you'll get it.) Roger had a million lines like that...he's just too much.

This is a classic song from Roger Miller - he's got some stuff worth checking out. Historically there's a good number of songs about the hobo lifestyle. Hopping trains, working odd jobs for a meal, just blowing around America like a tumbleweed.
