My dad was drafted and served as a United States Marine radio field operator in the Vietnam War. They had a life expectancy of about 5 minutes in combat .He was lucky to come home. He was just a country white guy from West Virginia ,but he always loved this song.. He hated war. RIP my old man .

This was Marvin's cry out song before tragedy stroke.. He knew exactly was was "going on" with his father, and that makes this son, aside beautiful, resptable sublime.... A great cover by H&O.

Best cover ever comes from ROBERT PALMER. He blends a medley of What’s Going On and Mercy Mercy Me with the ultimate blue-eyed soul version. Made with respect. Speaking of soul, this comes before Palmer sold his to produce those one beat pablums for MTV consumers.

My uncle played sax in a dance band. He told the young me that, because of the sax player, "Three Dog Night is a pretty good band for rock'n'roll". Lol. I think of him whenever I hear a wailing sax in rock songs. He would've liked the E Street Band!

Regarding “come to me with brutality,” I certainly don’t know, but could see Hall & Oates paying respect. That is, the police aren’t apt to punish my blue-eyed self, so let’s not even say it. H & O’s have spent too many music sessions and rehearsals with “we who are darker than blue,” not to…absorb.

Cyndi Lauper had a #12 hit with her sweet, dreamy cover of this off of her 2nd album back in 1987. There was also a pretty good all-star cover in 2001 by Artists Against AIDS Worldwide featuring most of the significant pop stars of the day, including Destiny's Child, Gwen Stefani, Britney and various rap stars. The track is good though the video is a bit heavy-handed.

Don't ever call Daryl Hall blue eyed soul... Daryl Hall has described the term "blue-eyed soul" as racist, saying "it assumes I'm coming from the outside. There's always been that thing in America, where if you're a white guy and you're singing or playing in a black idiom, it's like: 'Why is he doing that? Is he from the outside, looking in? Is he copying?

Like other posts said you're not incorrect it is : "Don't punish me, (Sister) with brutality. (Sister)" I think H&O changed the lyric to "Don't come to me" for a reason possibly?
