Yes! It's a true story. Dolly is a Queen and our National Treasure. Her philanthropy is amazing, too. She's such a giver. Her Imagination Library is amazing. She gives every US child a new book every month from 0-5 years old. I applied when I was pregnant and got a book every month until my son turned 6. She also helps pay college tuition for her employees at her theme park, Dollywood, 30 minutes from my house. I could go on and on... she's simply an amazingly kind, beautiful, and talented woman.

This song says a lot about Dolly. She wasn't mad at the kids that laughed at her, she felt sorry for them that they couldn't understand how important love is. She wasn't angry or frustrated with her mother that she didn't have a new store-bought coat - she appreciated the work and love her mother put into making it for her. Everything she has done since reinforces this message she wrote in one of her earlier songs about facing hardship with love and thankfulness and without self-pity or resentment. It is a good lesson for us all.

She's a brilliant musician, right up there with legends like Freddie Mercury, even in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame before she released her one rock album. Hysterically funny storyteller and actress. Nothing but love and boundless respect for our Dolly, a complete legend.

In Dollywood near Pigeon Forge Tennessee you can see a replica of the coat her momma made! The cabin she grew up in is also preserved. If you get the chance, watch her movie “Coat of Many Colors”. Make sure you have some Kleenex when you do. You cannot see the poverty she grew up in and not be impressed with her adult accomplishments, generosity and philanthropy.

Dolly comes from very humble beginnings, that song was about her childhood, most of her song are about her life experiences,She's always been my idol, My Father was Inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame back in the late 80's and when we we're young and be sitting around the house for family gatherings or what we would call just picking and grinning, My dad would break out his guitar and I'd sing that song, that was our thing everytime I'd visit all the way up till he passed away 4yrs ago, I'm 60yrs old now, Thank You sweetheart for such sweet memories ❤️ God Bless You, Thank You for your reaction hope you have a blessed day 🙏

I admire that she took control of her career and business. Her voice is hauntingly beautiful but you also have to admire her as a business women who gives back to her community. She has not only suceeded for herself but brought her community work. Her book scheme is also admirable. I live in the UK and find that Dolly could give lessons to British feminists in what it means to be a powerful woman in charge of your own destiny and unapologetically true to yourself.

When I was young my Mom made all my clothes. She loved this song. So she made me and my sister a coat of many colors. I would have never told my Mom but I didn't want to wear it to school. I just knew the kids would make fun of me. But instead they were asking where they could buy one. My Mom got all these phone calls from Mothers. They wanted her to make them for their girls and they pay her. My Mom said she was sorry but they were only for us.I felt ashamed, proud and happy at the same time.

I'm from Nashville TN and my mother was a poor child and she was called patches as a kid because of her patched garments. She said that she wrote a poem that was similar to this when she was a girl. A lot of kids back then were poor so had similar lifestyles. She says she met Dolly when she first came to Nashville and she knew that Dolly would make it because she was so determined.

A simple suggestion for you, as you seem to get the beauty of the voice would be Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt singing "The Sweetest Gift" or anything they did from the collaboration album Trio. There isn't such a thing as perfection but these three singing together are as close as we'll ever see/hear.

Dolly has a way about her. Its a characteristic that often lends itself to the term for "Southern Gentleman", or Southern Belle. It is her way of speaking as someone who is simply being honest, with no regards to attempting to fabricate or far from not telling the truth. It doesn't hurt that she has a nice singing voice and tells many stories.

Dolly grew up in extreme poverty in East Tennessee. 12 people in a one room cabin. This song is totally autobiographical. Of course, now she could probably buy the whole state of Tennessee. She's a smart business woman and a national treasure. She is the REAL DEAL. She's one of the most authentic artists we have left. There is so much represented in her singing voice when you listen. She is a small, petite person but when she opens her mouth to sing and that voice comes out, you hear the history of an entire culture of people who live in the mountainous region of the eastern part of the United States. You hear the suffering, the hardship, love and compassion of all that is encompassed and encapsulated in that voice of hers.

Dolly is an iconic American treasure. Not only has she been producing number 1 country hits for 30+ years, but she has been producing number 1 hits for multiple artists for just as long. You should really look into her as she is just as good a person as she is a songwriter. She set up the Imagination Library which gives free books to children (over 100M free books so far) as well as helped people in Tennessee after the hurricanes and wildfires ravaged the area. She has been awarded with the National Medal of the Arts (the highest honor the US Government gives for the arts), inducted into the Country Hall of Fame, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2022), 11 Grammy awards, written over 3000 songs, and most recently donated over $1M towards COVID vaccine research development. I look forward to watching you discover her talent.

Love your reaction to Dolly. One artist from those days is Charo and she just doesn’t get enough love and recognition in my opinion. Please check out Charo’s Maleguena. She is a Latin performer who was quite big in the 60-70’s. She had just as big of a personality too. ❤

You've reacted to Elvis a couple of times. Just like Dolly, he grew up dirt poor. When he was made aware of a song called “In the Ghetto”, he recognized himself in the lyrics. His management was against him recording it, but Elvis won the argument here. There is something to be said about “Singing it like you lived it” people will know the truth in the delivery. Which is Dolly's greatest strength as a lyricist.

Active during much of the same time, the country story-telling male counterpart to Dolly Parton is George Jones. Best choices to start include the all time top country song, "He Stopped Loving Her Today", and "The Grand Tour". Also, his original, "Tennessee Whiskey" is the basis for the popular Chris Stapleton cover.

This is one of those stories of poverty that so manynof us went through. Mom's who would sacrifice and do whatever they had to do to make sure their kids just had a coat to keep them warm.

Yep definitely true and she was dirt poor as a child. Many of her songs are very personal and based on her life growing up.

This performance was, I think, in 1989 - so the 3000 songs were as of 1989 - and she writes songs almost daily. I think I remember hearing that she had over 5000 songs copywrited by registering them with the Library of Congress.
