FIRST TIME LISTENING: TOOL - STINKFIST [REACTION!]

Музыка

Skullz reacts to Stinkfist by Tool
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

It's my understanding that this song is an extreme case of symbolism for human emotions. It's appears to be about fist f****ing lyrically, but it's only a metaphor for how the human race has to go to extremes to get feelings of satisfaction. My 2 cents

Everything about this song is set up to have you uncomfortable, then comfortable. All of their album's will take you on different journeys. And for me, the journey changes with every experience. That is why TOOL is one of very few artists that resonate with my soul.

This is the album where you can sort of see the transformation from the early sound to the current sound. While some of the anger is still there in the lyrics, there is also introspection too. This one also had the most singles of any album. Stinkfist, Eulogy, 46 & 2, H, and Aenima all got radio play.

This was my favorite tool album for over a decade. I had my interpretation of it. Thought I understood the themes. A few years ago I dated a resident psychiatrist and introduced her to the album. Immediately after stinkfist ended, she says “It’s about BPD?” I was like, “what?”. She says “he said finger/elbow/shoulder deep into the borderline. It sounded like he’s either in a relationship with a borderline or he is the borderline.” And just like that, this woman unlocked the underlying meaning of the entire album for me. It tied the whole thing together seamlessly.

Omg ! I’ve never thought of that although I have BPD and I relate to this song a lot! Also the line “show me that you love me and that we belong together “ one of the most distinct elements of BPD is separation anxiety and for someone with BPD it might be the headline in their head every time they get into a relationship. Also now I realize how much this song talks about conflicting feelings that is also one of the elements in BPD And being comfortable with pain? That is classic! You hurt yourself in order to feel relaxed and comfortable after an anxiety attack This is clicking so much dots in my head right now Mind blown 🤯

You'll come to appreciate why maynards singing being on an even keel with the rest of the band. I remember in high school i would hear aenema tracks on the radio and think "yeah thats cool." And then one day i was driving home a little depressed and stinkfist came on the radio and it was like i heard it.for the first time. The next day i went and bought aenema and never looked back. They really demand repeated listens in order to fully appreciate - so layered, so dense. A lot of the beauty is layered in subtle colors of sound - you can really tell that they spend a lot of time on post-undertow records. Oh, and check out the music video for stinkfist. The guitarist did it all. He's a genius. All of them are, which is such a rare thing in rick history.

  • @plexus
    @plexus2 жыл бұрын

Also, if you want to go forward thinking of this album thematically, without spoiling too much, I'll just say that the title Ænima (pronounced aah-nim-uh) is a portmanteau of the words anima and enema. I'm sure you know what an enema is, a flushing and purging of the colon... but anima, which is latin for "the animating principle" or the soul, comes from the Jungian term which basically is the deepest part of the psyche, or the "true self" that is buried underneath the ego and the shadow and all the conditioning and "shit" that compounds with experience. Jung was big on the union of opposites, so he saw the male "anima" as the feminine form of the psyche, and the female "animus" as the masculine, but the fact that it's feminine isn't really important in the context of the album. The point is that the title is a reference to the purging of the soul. So if you don't know much about Jung's "analytical psychology" you might be interested in researching a little primer on his concepts. He was very big about dream interpretation and seeking truth about one's self in the exploration of one's inner world to achieve what he calls "individuation", which basically just means becoming in tune and integrating your true self, which he saw as a life-long pursuit, rather than a means to an end. Anyway, it's clear that Maynard was highly influenced by Jung when he wrote this album, and was going through a personal transformation of sorts from the angry, angsty person you saw in Undertow to someone who's more in tune and at peace with themselves. And that progression follows throughout the rest of Tool's music. But this album is very much about introspection and confronting the "shadow self" and all the negative trauma and emotions in one's life to reach a higher potential. That's all. Just thought it would help you moving on with this album and your attempts at interpreting the music along the way. Also, you'll notice that the album is spelled Ænima with an "i", while the title track is spelled Ænema with an "e". Which will be clear when you reach that song. lol. Just another little thing to point out that most people don't notice on first listen. Enjoy, and I'll definitely be coming back to follow along on your Tool journey and live Vicariously through your first-time listens.

Maybe it is the fact of age, having children or todays society compared to the late 90s but I cant stop thinking about cell phones and social media. Constant overstimulation, nobody should be bored but in the end as much as many might complain about them it does seem like we would not want life any other way. Welcome to my equal favourite album and favourite Tool album of all time (there is no best Tool album. Only the one that speaks to you the most). I started my Tool journey with a second hand record store in late 2010. It blew me away. The pessimism mixed with optimism. The hate mixed with love. The beauty mixed with the crass. The positivity in dark content... And that chugging, unstoppable thud that perforates the whole album. This song is a good reflection of the whole record. I see it as lamenting the way we have to be stimulated by everything constantly and can't just relax without boredom. Because if we're constantly stimulated it dilutes our ability to enjoy things. It's being likened to fisting. The more we crave and push that envelope the less we feel that rush Small note there are a lot of interludes and you should consider pairing them with a song to avoid disappointing yourself. Especially Interlude and Pushit (I think?) as they blend musically

  • @Skullzrapper

I have the interludes worked out. Some people left me some comments. Appreciate the help 💯 Yeah there's definitely a sense of diminishing returns when there's too much stimulation. It's really cuts to the core of human nature 💯

Paul was the bass player for Opiate and Undertow, and he was there for a good portion of the writing of this album, but Justin came in and finished the album. Justin amd Danny seem to be on the same wavelength and their interplay on this, and the later albums is incredible. I'm not sure Tool would have evolved in the same way had Paul stayed in the band.

the change of producer represents a major leap forward in their soundscapes. their sound became so much richer, less abrasive, and more atmosperic yrt without negating any of the band's raw energy. sitting the vocals right back into this album opener was i think a master stroke, enticing you into their collossal sound in search of the meaning to this beautifully frail sounding vocal and then battering you about during the pre-chorus, then disappearing back into the pummeling music. adam jones' video with this underneath is about as pummeling a sensory ride as you will ever experience.

Opiate really connected with me when I was just around 20, angsty, angry, and frustrated with the world. It has some of the best songs to me because I grew up with them. Not sure how much I'd enjoy it after hearing all their newer stuff first, as well being older and perhaps just a little more chill than I was back then. I do remember at the time I did NOT want introspective Maynard, I wanted pissed off rage Maynard. But the songs I disliked at first are some of my all time favorites. Great band through and through.

Like I said when you finished disgustipated, they set for next... changing narrative. From self to society or self in society ; artwork show something that looks like a screen or tv; perception or how society percents themselves. Maynard just calls out what he sees. Of course integrating and maintaining his personal experiences and the way he sees and maybe despises and accepts it; adjust self to evolving human psychi while dealing with own journey/ realization/ enlightenment. And getting a message across

The album is pronounced Ahh-neh-ma. This album is so dope and there are so many great songs from it. The engineering is definitely more produced and you'll see that continue as you progress to the later albums. Not that they're more produced but they use production almost as a 5th instrument. Its about desensitization. In general, sure, but more specifically with humanity and things like media consumption. The way we need more sex and violence on the screen to push the boundaries to feel something. Think your average horror movie from the 70s or 80s like Halloween and how tame that is compared to something like Human Centipede or Saw or Hostel. The song is more generalized, and that's just an example. It can be any sort of desensitization, but media is a good example. Just look where the internet has brought us as a society. But the TV screen at the start of the music video and the further exploration of the theme in Vicarious makes me definitely think that was on his mind when he wrote the lyrics. The anal fisting part is just a metaphor for needing more and more stimulation to feel something. I.e. finger>knuckle>shoulder

Stinkfist is an easy entry into Aenima. Nearly radio friendly. And maybe by holding back the vocal track Maynard is telling us to keep digging? Maybe we’re ‘vocals’ overstimulated? Haha… just shitting around with lyrics. I like how he explores from a small voice-to begging for more in the chorus. You won’t regret choosing Aenima now. It gets more interesting with every track. Save Opiate for a chaser after Fear Innoculum.

  • @Skullzrapper

Yeah thats what I was thinking for Opiate 💯 And I agree I think Stinkfist lyrically is A LOT like Undertow. I didn't think about that with the way he's mixed. The fact that his vocals are mixed as if he's on the phone too makes me think he feels far away from what he's talking about maybe, like a rift between them? (also kind of weird that Disgustipated ended with the walkie talkie effect and then the album starts with a similar effect). And then in the hook he's loud and clear. Everything they do is so damn dense! 🔥
