So this song starts with the mathematical "Fibonacci sequence" where after 1 1, each number is the sum of the two numbers before it. So 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 etc. The next number to come is always the last two numbers added together, forever. If you count the syllables in each line Maynard sings, he is going up and down that mathematical sequence. This is not a coincidence. It's why each line he sings seems to end abruptly on a weird beat. While you were listening to the words, he was counting out the Fibonacci sequence using words. The Fibonacci sequence is also the basis of the "golden spiral" seen in nature: shellfish curves, sunflower patterns etc. Natural spirals outward. Renaissance artists used this a lot in their paintings, but it's everywhere in nature. But Maynard isn't done fucking with your head. He puts all that together with the (mathematically counted) lyrics being about overthinking things and over-using the logic/math side of your brain, then finally ending with him repeatedly singing "spiral outward" at the end. Yeah, the lyrics are actually about what he's doing with the beat counts of the lyrics. To your brain. It both does this in the musical structure but also tells you what it's doing in the lyrics at the same time. The music is about the lyrics, and the lyrics are about the music. Or maybe it's two snakes eating each other by the tail: an Ouroborous forming a Perfect Circle... The band also forces you to pay attention with the constant odd time signature changes, the beat counts (and guess what numbers they use for those?) They're always switching that up while keeping the same sound. There is no such thing as just settling into the groove with this song, because you keep finding yourself off beat, because they changed it when you didn't notice. It makes you pay attention, makes you think with the mathematical side of your brain regularly interrupting the other musical groove side. So you're always off balance while also feeling the music, because they're just that smooth, and crazy, and weird, and mathematical and brilliant. I didn't make this shit up by the way. A lot of people have dug all the way down on this song and noticed these things before, probably even more than I've shared here, because Internet. All of the above is pretty widely documented by Tool fans, what they did here. "Masterpiece." You were one of those kids who naturally skipped to the correct answer without showing your work to the teacher, weren't you? Because that is the correct answer.

On fucking point! Fear innoculum is another one of those tricks too. During the bridge all seven instruments are on different key signatures and didn't hear each other when they recorded them separately I guess from what i heard. It's insane how brilliant these men are! Stepping through the shadow and riding the spiral out!

The odd time signatures are 9/8, 8/8, and 7/8 which hear me out 987 is a Fibonacci number. His second band is also name a perfect circle. And Fibonacci goes even deeper than that if you take the golden ratio of the overall length of “under pressure” and go to that time stamp you fall right into David Bowie’s crescendo. And let’s fuck some minds a bit more with a high thought You can fall into a infinite outward spiral finding connections between everything that exists and the Fibonacci sequence 😂

Lol. He doesn't sing all that in one breath. Granted Maynard has one of the most powerful pairs of lungs of any singer ever he breathes in and out during that time. Watch him sing it live. He breathes in between. Anyone who could sing all that with one breath wouldn't be human. He does an amazing job not sounding like he's breathing though.

@@ShEDDiNgmYSkiN He definitely does it on the album version though. If you read the lyrics while listening to him you can tell there's no breaks in between the words and no time at all to take breaths. He does it all at once. It all flows together into a continuous melody for the full 50 seconds. Probably took him hundreds of takes to get it right in the studio, but he did it :)
