The audience.....the fans, all are happy and experiencing heavy uphoria. They came with high expectations which were exceeded by the live performance. These bands and audiences were ubiquitous throughout the 70,s and beyond. Competition in the music industry mixed with the freedom of creativity for vocal artists and musicians back then made this possible.

Stories say that the drummer's parents were in the audience that night and he wanted to impress them... he did by 'going nuts' and playing much faster that expected.

I’ve seen this performance a few hundred times and I never get tired of it. Greatest live performance ever.
Mark is left-handed person playing a right-handed guitar which makes sense since as in his case the left hand is very busy all of the time. He also wrote & arranged the music. Differing tempo was important to them, is what I think. It gave the audience a chance to contribute. xo He is also one of the only R & R artists who uses his fingers & not a pick. This is jamming. The guitar is talking to & responding to the keyboard player, you will see Mark nod to the key board player. This is live long play performances which was incredible to witness. Love Mark & all the incredible musicians he played with over so many years. x
That drummer is unreal !!!!

The whole band is...
One of the best hit songs of the late 70's.
The brilliance of this performance lies in 2 particular places. First is the fact that almost every riff Mark Knopfer plays is a brilliant melodic hook. He could’ve written fifteen different hit songs with the riffs he put into this song alone. Secondly, it’s the variable dynamics and tempo of the performance. We will likely never hear a track like this on a record, as these days, mastering engineers tend to apply so much compression to a mix that it has no changes in dynamics:the soft parts are made loud, and the loud parts are squashed, causing a song to play at a consistent volume throughout. Moreover, in this performance, the band very subtly speeds up and slows the performance, creating feelings of tension and release. Modern recording practise is to snap every instrument’s rhythm to a fixed grid, ensuring we never feel that tension.
Telegraph Road next please guys - from the same concert its EPIC 😊

Mark was one of the premier guitarists of the era. His finger-picking style was his trademark. I grew up when country music was country, when Elvis came along, the Beatles, Motown, and what today we call "classic rock" filled the airwaves and the 8 inch speakers in our cars through the AM radio. The golden age of music. Enjoy.

Welcome to Dire Straits! So many great songs. I got to see Knofler play a solo show in Indy that was spectacular.

Try Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live. They were on fire at Alchemy. Dire Straits have their own unique sound.
Do Telegraph Road from the same concert (Alchemy). You won’t be disappointed by this other musical trip!
Seeing Dire Straits live in 1983 blew my mind I was so high on JUST the music. But, from there on it spoilt for me listening to studio albums because I preferred what they did live & that is long play jams only can be seen at their live performances. Thank God for Alchemy live CD & Blu-ray. I have a 3-room Lifestyle 50 zoned Bose music sound system so when I am listening so are all the neighbours. I feel sorry young people today did not have the opportunity to see so many of these fantastic bands & there was so much talent & competition. There was something for everyone. As to Mark he is a Guitar God. The drummer was outstanding. His family was there that night, so Mark told him to go all out. Dire Straits are my favourite band of all time & I love Pink Floyd too although they are very different to one another. The 60's 70's & 80's had an absolute outstanding variety of talent not seen today. ZZ Top are different but really cool. Take a look at La Grange Gruen Hall. It is a short version of La Grange but showed how cool these 3 guys are still. Then there is Australia's AC/DC. OMG their performances are electric just incredible & one concert in Argentina, Live at River Plate was amazing. My favourites are Back in Black & Thunderstruck. This band by that time had already been performing for nearly 3 decades & were in their 50's. Over 3 nights they performed to over 200,000 people. Made it I think so. So, I would say have a look at them too.
A virtual guitar is an Air Guitar! It's an ancient instrument, invented shortly after the electric guitar and available to all. Always has perfect tone too!

plus see his unique finger picking..... this is unique and brilliant
David was Mark's brother but left the band before this tour, he was rhythm guitar. He replaced by Hal Lindes and subsequently by Jack Sonni. Pick Withers was the original drummer, but he left in 1982 and was replaced by Terry Williams who is playing drums here. Interesting fact, Mark claims that despite having played the song thousands of times, the closing solo is never played exactly the same. If you enjoyed this check out the version of the same song from the Nelson Mandela birthday concert at Wembley stadium in the late 80's. Also worth checking out is a song called Tunnel of Love from Wembley Arena in 1985 (the closing solo is a work of art) and any live version of a song called Telegraph Road. Mark never uses a pick its all finger picked, he is also naturally left handed but plays guitar right handed. Also this song is actually about a real band that Mark saw in a pub.
I went to see them live in Main Rd Manchester with my wife, it was the best concert we have ever seen.....you did them Justice, I loved your video...fantastic.
This ia a rock concerto with all the mood and tempo shifts.
Brothers In Arms. Beautuful song, beautiful music. Dire Straits and particularly Mark Knopfler make great mysic.
Its brilliant, its over 40 years old! I was at Hammersmith for this show in July 1983, it was great at the time, all these years later you realise it was genius. They were all geniuses, but as you say, Terry Williams's drumming was just amazing, he played like that for a couple of hours or so! Now react to the Alchemy version of Telegraph Road
Mark Knopfler has such a beautiful touch on the guitar brings out so many emotions. Telegraph road is an epic song .

Great reaction. Welcome to the wonderful world that has Mark Knopfler and the Dire Straits in it. Mark Knopfler is a master story teller. His songs take you on a journey and always have a deeper meaning. His voice and guitar work together to add the emotion to the stories like no other. There are great song writers, guitarists, story tellers, and singers in the world. But Mark is one of the few that is all of them together in one fantastic package. Check out “Tunnel of Love” live at Wembley Arena 1985, “Private Investigations” live on Alchemy. “Brothers in Arms”, “Speedway at Nazareth” live Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris version, and so much more. His solo career - 10 albums and a bunch of movie scores is fantastic as well.
I have watched several reactions to this and the reactors all just start smiling and nodding their heads.
The finger picking style really makes DS music distinctive from other rock bands. "Brothers in Arms" is not a "rock" song but is one of their most thoughtful songs.
Thanks for this reaction! It brough me right back to my bedroom when I was about 15 ('78/'79) when this single was released - I was hooked immediately. For more Dire Straights, you might do all the cuts on Making Movies, better yet, react to the entire album....I promise, you won't be disappointed.....
Thanks guys. 3 things always get me with this vid... Mark Knopfler's virtuoso guitar, the drummer's hands are a blur, and they look so happy playing!

Fingerstyle rock guitar at it's best. He was and is amazing. Thanks for the review. Dire Straits means big trouble. Sultans Of Swing was the name of the jazz band they went in out of the rain to listen to while they were traveling. True story and the inspiration for this tune.
Great reacción more DIRE STRAITS 'MONEY FOR NOTHING,BROTHERS IN ARMS'
Thank you both for your appreciation of this much beloved iconic band. Dire Straits, a brilliantly gifted band of British musicians, were led by Mark Knopfler, a Geordie, and one of the most celebrated British guitar heroes to emerge in the late 1970s and '80s, inimmitable finger picking guitarist/singer/prolific songwriter & storytelling lyricist/composer/musician, who wrote & arranged every song for Dire Straits 6 albums, before leaving the band in 1995. MK has had a helluva musical career, collaborating with many, many other famous artists, writing music scores for 9 films, & all the wonderful songs & lyrics for the albums made during his ‘Solo’ career with another band of multitalented musicians, whose 10th album was released this April 2024. Just a little tip, in an early video statement by Mark Knopfler, he personally feels that for a more enjoyable video experience of DS it’s best to avoid the ‘official’ commercial videos, & watch their Live, undubbed performances that have additional content and are a lot more atmospheric. I heartily agree, IMO most fans and newcomers would far rather watch your reaction to the actual live action. If you feel like watching more from DS I recommend any of the following specific KZread videos: Dire Staits - Telegraph Road - Alchemy Live - 1983 (brilliant) Dire Straits / Sting - Money For Nothing (Live Aid 1985) ‘Dire Straits - LIVE (On the Night 1992/1993) HD’ (for their final On Every Street Album): All performances on this tour were excellent, but the following are a few favourites. Romeo and Juliet Private Investigations Calling Elvis Heavy Fuel Walk of Life You and Your Friends (all great performances) Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms - LIVE Wembley 1988 - Audio HQ Remastérise HD (Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute) (Inspired by Britain’s short war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, way back in 1982, Mark Knopfler’s emotive song & lyrics ‘Brothers in Arms ‘focuses on the pointlessness of war. The song is a timeless anti-war song which has become an anthem for many world wide ex-servicemen & women & the men & women serving in the armed services today. He sings the lyrics in the voice of a soldier dying on the battlefieldI ❤️MK with DS & Solo
Guys, it is so fantastic to watch your reaction to the genius that is Mark Knopfler and the Dire Straits band. Sultans of Swing is a great beginning. As a lyricist, Mark is all about storytelling. One rainy night, he heard a pub band playing some jazz. He walked in "outa the rain" to "hear the jazz go down". There were very few patrons there "competition from other places" etc. But the catch for Mark was the fact they called themselves the Sultans of Swing. Almost all of Mark's songs are stories, coupled with some of the most extraordinary guitar playing in various music genres you can imagine. "River of Love", "Tunnel of Love", "Skateaway"", "Telegraph Road", "Portabella Belle", "Brothers in Arms", "Money for Nothing", "The Bug", "Walk of Life", "Why worry", "Calling Elvis", " When it comes to you", "You and your friend", "Heavy Fuel", "Private Investigations", "So far away from me", "Romeo and Juliet", "Hold on", "Local Hero", the acoustic versions of "Wild Theme", "Smooching", and the Electric guitar versions of "Going Home" based on the melodies in "Wild Theme" - all the music soundtracks he wrote for the movies Local Hero, Cal, The Princess Bride, Wag the Dog, and Altamira, and duet album with the one of the other greatest guitarists - Chet Atkins. ALL OF THIS in a myriad of musical genres when he still had his Dire Straits band...and then, to continue as a solo career for the next 30 years and on. I've had the greatest of pleasures of living and working in London just as Dire Straits started over 40 years ago...and have had the greatest of privileges of enjoying Mark's music all this time into his long solo phase. Enjoy true musical genius while you still have ears to listen. So much music, so many different genres, so much genius! As a finger plucking electric guitarist he is without peer. The sounds he can produce cover the whole scope of human emotion. Mark is the musician's musician, and the guitarist's guitarist. Enjoy!
Saw them live in Sydney 1986, shared a scoob or two, awesome concert. and light show.
Great pick up on the story telling, that's exactly what it is. Mark Knopfler is great at stories, and this is the story of a guy out in London one evening dropping into a small pub and watching the band playing in the corner. Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road are also great stories from Dire Straits.
Lived by the drummer Terry in Hanover St in Swansea S Wales, amazing! 🏴
Mark Knopfler is the Mozart of Rock Gitarre 🎸 🎸
Ok Kids , I think you're ready for a band that Dire Straits definitely owe some gratitude to , The Allman Brothers Band . They were one of the 1st bands that was successful in the early 70's playing a blues based stew with elements of rock , jazz , country & psychedelia ( not a bridge too far from this video ) . A band that was so talented over the course of a 45 year career , 4 of the guitarists that played in the ABB over the course of that time , were listed on Rolling Stone magazines Original Top 100 Guitarists of all time List in 2000 . With Duane Allman listed as #2 behind only Jimi Hendrix , with his guitar slinging partner , Dickey Betts from the original band also making the list and 2 of the guitarists from the later years version of the band , Warren Haynes , ( he leads the band Gov't Mule ) who IMO "saved" the Allman Brothers on 2 separate occasions , 1st when he was added to the band as the other guitarist opposite original member Dickey Betts for the "Dreams" reunion tour of 1989 , which coincided with a then popular CD item , the box set , of which the "Dreams" collection had 4 of which include the usual rarities & outtakes not previously released . Warren had to come in & basically play the Duane parts opposite Dickey , then after leaving the band in '97 he was asked to return in 2001 . But this time with new hot shot slide guitar prodigy Derek Trucks filling the Duane role , Warren now had to play the Dickey parts and of course he nailed it , as he was better suited to those guitar parts . Derek Trucks , a Guitar playing prodigy & nephew of ABB founding member & drummer , Butch Trucks , is the 4th member of this list . He had already sat in with the band as a 13 year old & was asked to join the band full time in '99 at the ripe old age of 19 . He currently makes beautiful music with his wife & stellar musician in her own right, Susan Tedeschi in The Tedeschi-Trucks band. A Perfect starting point to dive into the ABB rabbit hole is "Statesboro Blues" their opening number on their Live album "At the Fillmore East" (which is in the U.S. Library of congress as a significant cultural music document ) for a deeper dive into what the band is capable of musically check out the instrumental , "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" from the same album . You won't regret it . Cheers ! 🙂

Knopfler an absolute master of his craft but you’ve got to take your hat off to Williams..you wont hear many drummers like him..brilliant!
He's the best.
