Early mid 70s. This was my youth. Can sing almost every song. Remember, this was before auto tune, so that is her voice. Look for some videos with her vocals isolated for a true treat. Just no other voice like hers and I was crushed when I heard she died. I was on break working my teller job when they broke in to announce it on the radio on a Saturday morning. Just such a loss. Karen and Richard were so incredibly talented. Richard has carried on. Thankfully, they had so much tape with Karen’s voice. Those tight harmonies were Richard and Karen dubbed and redubbed until you had a choir. I’ll never tire of her voice. Thanks for this memory! ❤️

She was a drummer. That was her main talent. She just happens to be a great singer as well! Richard, her brother, asked her once to cover the voice for a song they wanted to record. She blew the socks off everyone in the recording studio. At first she used to sing while playing the drums. She felt safe behind them. She was only 5'4" and very shy. But later her voice took over.😊 Most likely the drums you hear are her playing them on a separate track. This was a common practice when recording. She was very particular about the percussion in her songs. This is an example of her talent with the drums. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pZh829yAiKSwgMo.htmlsi=UZjtsuIuad-OOEx1 Enjoy!

Luther Vandross did his cover in the 80’s. This song was 1971. Richard Carpenter did all the orchestration. Luther mixed it up in his style. Ruben Studdard covered Luther’s version to win American Idol season 2. I’m going to let the others suggest another Carpenters song. I’m going to suggest a Carpenters song cover! Yup, James Wilkas f. Tori Holub recreated the classic Carpenters song We’ve Only Just Begun. Tori is 20 the same again as Karen was in 1970 when she recorded her version. In Late April, Tori was one of 8 invited singers at the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration. So she got the cred. She also got the voice. I hope you consider this a viable option, in keeping with a Carpenters style. They honored Karen by releasing the cover on March 2, 2024, Karen’s birthday in heaven. I remember listening to every album, watching every appearance and loving my fellow “Karen” (before the name became what it is now). I was only a kid and her voice was pure magic, I wanted to be just like her. What’s heartbreaking now is knowing that all the beauty of her voice, presence and person brought her no happiness and killed her by her early 30’s. She was extremely shy, didn’t think she was attractive and very sensitive as she’d been bullied (I can relate to that). She did love playing the drums and agreed to help her brother’s band with that only. It was out of the spotlight. Unfortunately Richard wrote amazing songs but his voice was only ok and none of the others had a talent like hers. Richard and her mother (especially her mother) pushed her until she agreed to sing and once people heard her there was no going back. She still might have been ok if they could have just recorded but it was the live shows and tv appearances that doomed her. She dreaded each one and was physically sick before every performance, likely where the bulimia grew from. Then the professional bullies took over, calling her chubby (she was never chubby) and constant calling her plain, unattractive and every ugly. Sadly she believed it all.
