Awww man I spoke to soon. I never knew my dad he was absent until the last few years of my life and that was only bc of my daughter. Then he died in Dec 21 2021. Then my mom who raised me on her own just died Xmas Eve 2022. Hardest thing I've ever did! But I know where your coming from I waited my whole life even seeking for any type of compliment but they never came and now it's to late and I find myself questioning if they regret it now. But bc of that it's made me a better person and shown me what not to do. 💯 But that pain will always remain.

It's how I've always interpreted this song too. Maybe that's more a reflection of my own feelings than NF's . I'm not sure.

Same type of relationship with my father , he was absent my whole life and I still always defended him and wanted to see him and when I got older he started coming around and by that time I had basically learned this is how we are to eachother and he says I’m distant , but I don’t know how to tell him that this is how he showed me to love him. When my daughter died I was reaching out to him for his presence or guidance and he told me to get over her death just go to work get your mind off it , I feel what you said about there era man

My dude, when you said your dad told you “I trust your driving only”. And your wife broke it down and told you that’s his way of saying I love you. I swear we grew up with the same dad. About 7 years ago I rented a backhoe and took it to my parents house to dig a trench for rain water to drain away from their house. He told me “you’re the only person I feel comfortable with digging with this machinery and I can go inside and know nothing is going to go wrong”. I was so scared to keep digging because I knew if I messed up, the only positive comment my dad told me in my 37 years of life, would have been followed up with “I spoke to soon.” But driving home that day I broke down when my wife told me, the moment he made that comment, his facial expression changed and you could see love in his face while speaking. Man you made my day, because I thought my wife was just trying to make something out of nothing but I guess she was telling the truth.
