First Time in Vilnius, Lithuania

It's our first time in Vilnius, Lithuania and we quickly fall in love with this small Baltic nation. In this video we explore the Old Town - the biggest you'll find in the Baltics - and start the day at our super cozy Airbnb (see link below). We make our way to Cathedral Square and see the Gediminas Monument, which is not your average statue, and it makes us already start to appreciate Lithuanians' sense of humour. Next is the Frank Zappa Memorial and Literature Street - both evidence of how Vilnius appreciates the arts. We pass through the Gate of Dawn - known as a site of miracles - and the local Market Hall. To warm up and fill our bellies, we make our way to a local restaurant called Šnekutis to try Lithuanian food. We spend the evening at the MO Museum and an exhibition about the 90s in Lithuania when the country regained independence from the Soviet Union. We end the night on Iceland Street - of course we had to visit here! - which is so named to honour Iceland for being the first country to recognize Lithuania's regained independence.

fun fact: Once a year that Iceland street is closed off and transformed into one big Iceland themed party to commemorate that first recognition of independent Lithuania. There are banners with "Takk, Island" and other Iceland themed activities. Also that street is full of pubs, so, you know, fun times :)

Very happy to see another one of your videos of you & Marc, despite knowing you're actually at home, not feeling so good, dealing possibly with the virus. I'm hoping & praying you didn't get it, and it was merely from something less bad, temporarily. By this time since last week, hope you are feeling better already and everyone in your families are doing well also; Get well soon from whatever was causing your persistent chest pains. Anyway, I enjoy your videos as always, take care & get better very soon, wherever you & Marc are at. Btw, that definitely looked to be Windows 95, on a large & very old Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) screen; and then the VHS tape store; it's very much as if for technology, that area of the world was mid- to late- 1990s yet. PS, It was WIndows 3.11 (Windows for workstations)- released around 1993; WIndows 95, & WIndows 98 for the 1990-versions of Windows before Millennium Edition (ME) came out around 2000.

Just to add on to the emotions of the 1992 Olympics, Lithuania actually could not afford sending its basketball team to the Olympics. The funding was raised through selling merchandise. Lithuanian basketball team won the bronze medals in those games.

The next time you have a flickering CRT monitor on your desk at work, just call for an IT person to increase the refresh rate. It takes 30 seconds and fixes the problem. I did this every time I got a new monitor. They thought I was odd because they couldn't see the flickering and they told me most people don't.

Mano vardas Keith Sims As Gyvinu America. Hi, my name is Keith Sims and I am a American living in Vilnius. I met my wife who is Lithuanian in Vilnius in 2011 and we have a wonderful little girl who was born here. I love this country and the people and the city. We actually live about a 15 minute drive outside of Vilnius in the country and the next time you come back, let me know and we can spend time together. By the way there are a few Americans living here and call this place home as well.

This vlog of yours is particular moving to me, coming from Taiwan, especially on the part about Iceland Street. Lithuania knows what it’s like to be under the boot of a larger power, so when Iceland reached out with a helping hand, they were grateful. I’m not sure if you’ve been following the news between Lithuania and Taiwan, but now Lithuania is extending this favor forward and setting up mutual representative offices with TW, just one step away from formally recognizing Taiwan as a country without fear of angering China (which it absolutely did). This is good karma. They are a great people. Cannot wait to visit Vilnius. And the city itself just looks lovely.

Also, Chernobyl TV series was filmed in Vilnius and 4'th season of 'Stranger things' just been filmed there as well. I don't know why I'm telling you that, but there's a possibility you watched/will be watching these TV series.

GD Gediminas holds his sword like this because hes not good at fighting but good at diplomacy and strategical thinking. His primary achievements: The political isolation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the Western European side was abolished. The military power of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was significantly strengthened. From the medium-sized state, the GDL became one of the largest in Europe. Vilnius began to become a European-type city

And also the zeppelin hanger markets. In Tallinn it was walking around the outside of the castle walls through the parks. As well as Telliskivi Poetanav creative city. Best, Nick J
