First time in ISAAN Thailand(Buriram): Phanom Rung Historical Park, Isan Thai Food, Prasat Muang Tam

In this Thailand Travel Vlog we head to ISAAN for the first time!! We decided to take a weekend trip from Bangkok to visit Buriram, Thailand! There was so much we wanted to do on this trip and we managed to get most of it done on our weekend away!
We arrived on a bus from Bangkok late Friday night so we went directly to sleep. When we woke up on Saturday we first wanted to rent a motorbike to drive around! Unfortunately most places didn't have any bikes available! We ended up talking to the motorbike taxi drivers by the Buriram bus station. They were SO nice and ended up calling a friend who delivered a bike to us that we could rent! 🎉🎉🎉
We drove an hour south of the Buriram city center to visit Phanom Rung Historical Park! It ended up being the most amazing temple visit! Phanom Rung is a Khmer monument that is similar in design to Angkor Wat in Cambodia! We had so much fun walking around the temple and exploring the grounds. The temple is actually built on top of an extinct volcano so there are nice views of the surrounding area.
When we purchased our tickets to Phanom Rung, we actually got joint tickets for both Phanom Rung Historical Park as well as Prasat Muang Tam! Prasat Muang Tam is another ancient Khmer temple only 10 minutes from Phanom Rung!
On the drive between them we stopped at a roadside Thai restaurant that we were driving past. It didn't look too special from the front, but the back was SO cute!! We wanted to try some Isan Thai food while we were in the area. We ended up ordering Isan som tum (papaya salad), as well as beef larb and some fried rice. The food was interesting.
Unfortunately the weekend we traveled ended up being the coldest weekend in the whole year we lived in Thailand! Which was made even colder because we were in Buriram!!! But we still had an amazing day!

We’ve been trying to plan a weekend there…..but it seems like we’ll have to take an overnight bus Friday after work which arrives at the mountain at 4am….and hiking at 4am after not sleeping a lot doesn’t sound very fun 😭 hopefully we can figure out a better way to do it soon! 🤞🤞❤️❤️❤️

I'm glad that at least you guys got to experience the cold weather in Thailand once. Nowadays, the period of cold weather is very short. In the past it was much colder and longer. until the local people had to come out and gather together to make a fire to create warmth and burning khao lam is an activity that becomes a way of life in winter

Yes somtum isan style is the fermented fish one. The one that you like from before is somtumTai and I would like to recommend tumkowpode(they use corn instate of papaya ) . Have fun and be careful

Thank you! 🥰🥰 we weren’t sure if we tried the fermented fish one because it wasn’t very bad! Although we still prefer the som tam Thai. But corn som tam is OUR FAVORITE!!! 😍😍😍 I think we’ve had the corn salad at least twice a week for over a year 😍🤣🤣❤️
I've been to Khao Phanom Rung Castle 2 times. I really like it. It's amazing. Everything looks magical and the scenery there is so beautiful.

I like the " Barai " ( A large water reserve) it's for worshippers coming to the temple during that time. This area in Thailand was formerly Ancient Khmer kingdom.

Some Thai don't eat the raw crab in Somtum but some eat, ( The fresh crabs are put in the salty water for some days or weeks) It is put in Somtum Isaan to make the different taste from Somtum Thai ,which is a bit sweeter. I am Thai and I love Somtum with crabs..but I have never eaten it.

We didn’t eat the crab that was in our Isan som tam 😬 but we LOVE Thai som tam!! We eat it every couple days in Bangkok! ❤️
So happy with you guys! We usually have many temples to visit in this part of the country.Isan is said to be the land of friendly and kind people. Many western people come here to become Buddhist monks which you can visit at Wat pa na na chart( International buddhist monastery ) in Ubon.

That's nice and enjoy of journey Natalia Carles. Thanks for coming and helpng for promote tourism. In additional to the presented or anouther history and many people will have to come and see over there. That is lintel Narai Banthumsin, one part of Pranomrung it has been lost since Vietnam war and later found it in Chicago, but currently get back then 35 years ago from U.S. goverment. So that became a point of inerest too.

Wow.. you know the secret of Phanomrung castle. You can only see the sunrise in the morning through the castle's 15 portholes only four times a year, which can be viewed in April

It was sooooo cold!!!! But it was also cold in Bangkok that weekend 🤷♀️ we just happened to go to Buriram the coldest weekend of the winter 🥺🤣❤️
Welcome back again to see tha amazing of the ancients. You must see the sun rises and sets through all 15 gates of Phanomrung and it just once a year!

We really want to go hiking in Phu Kradueng!!! It’s difficult to get there for just a weekend as the buses arrive at 4am then we need to hike for hours 😭🤞🤞
