SHOCKED by SHIMLA 🇮🇳 Solo India Travel Vlog - Snow in India, Jakhu Temple, The Ridge & Mall Road
Filmed on February 1st, 2024
After having an amazing time in Chandigarh, I decided to take the toy train from Kalka to Shimla to explore India's most popular hill station! When I arrived I was shocked at the altitude of Shimla! I didn't realize that it was so high. The height made it even more difficult to climb up all the hills with my backpack to arrive at my hostel. I woke up early the next day to try to explore as much of Shimla as I could before escaping from the cold! I started my day taking the Jakhu Ropeway up to Jakhu Temple. I'm so glad I took the ropeway up instead of walking as it was a long and steep walk! During the 6 minute ride up to the top it started snowing! I was so amazed to see snow in India as generally I think of India as a very warm country. Unfortunately when I arrived at the Jakhu Temple it was very cloudy so I didn't have much of a view, but it was worth it to see the snow! I ended up going to the cafe (Cafe Under Tree) at the top of the temple to try to warm up. It was a really nice cafe where I was able to order aloo paratha and also the local lachha paratha. They were both so good! After the cafe I decided to walk down from the temple to keep exploring Shimla. I had heard that the monkeys in Shimla could be scary, but I didn't expect them to be as scary as they were when I was walking down from Jakhu Temple! Luckily after seeing the scariest monkeys ever, I ran into the cutest dogs ever!!! The dogs in Shimla were amazing because they were all big mountain dogs, but they were sooo sweet!!! After playing with the puppy and seeing the views, it started to hail! After the random hail, I met some really nice guys from Chanidgarh who were showing me how much snow they saw earlier that morning. I continued walking down the hilly streets of Shimla until I arrived at the Book Cafe. I LOVE it there - all the employees are SO nice! After getting a hot coffee I saw the whole view of The Ridge. Then I walked past the two most famous buildings in Shimla - the church and the tudor style library before continuing to walk along the Ridge. While walking the Ridge I stumbled upon Bantony Castle. While I hadn't heard of this museum before, it was only 50 rupees to enter so I decided to go for it. It was actually a really interesting museum that taught me a lot about both Shimla as well as Himachal Pradesh! I then stopped at the viewpoint at Hotel Landmark where I met the most amazing mountain dogs ever!!! They were all so cute and even accompanied me on part of my walk! After walking along the road for a little, I found the nice walkway path to IIAS (Indian Institute of Advanced Study) in Shimla. I finally arrived at the Viceregal Lodge inside the IIAS complex. I was lucky that I arrived shortly before the last tour! Apparently you can only enter the Viceregal Lodge while on a tour and you can't take any pictures/videos inside the building. It was so nice thought and definitely worth it! I then walked back to Mall Road where I ate an amazing paneer wrap. It then started to storm! I returned to the Book Cafe to warm up with a tea when we lost power! After then it was tons of snow all night. I woke up the next morning to a gorgeous, white, snowy Shimla! It was such a cool experience to see so much snow in India!

My advice as a indian. Dont get scared or uncomfortable if families or people are starring at you. In India its still new thing to see foreigners. sometimes they just look at you out of curiosity 😅. But once you will endure everything, you will love it. honestly i have been to 17 western countries and lived as well. i find indians most open and friendly people. another reason why i still miss my home.
We Indian always goes to shimla, dehradun, lakshdweep , goa , kashmir, kochhi , kerela , North East India etc etc for travel, but 99% foreigner goes to very dirty polluted area of old delhi , what they want to see😂

Why is snow in india so surprising for some foreigners ?? People need to learn more about geography. Hill states Uttrakhand, Himachal ,J&K, and a few parts of northeast India get tones and tones of snow. Dont forget the great Indian Himalayas.

Really!! I was there for 3 months and there’s sooo much more I want to see!
Shimla was the 'summer' Capital of British India in the 19th century along with Calcutta (today called Kolkata) - the 'winter' capital. At that time, there were no motor cars and the entire British Indian government including all the people and the stuff they would need, used to load up on animals and travel to Shimla and back to Kolkata in a caravan...Many buildings and other structures from the British era still remain in Shimla. And the combination of the British and Pahari (mountain people) cultures, gives Shimla its unique Identity and ambience

Why is snowfall in India so surprising? We have a whole Himalayan range and so many of our states lie in this range. Do foreigners not expect snowfall in the world's highest mountain range?
@NataliesPassport

I think most foreigners just don’t expect snow in India 🤷♀️
@therash09

@@NataliesPassport, interesting! That surprises me because the world knows the basic fact that India has the Himalayan range. And given that the western world enjoys a very high literacy rate, one would expect at least them to apply basic common sense in this regard. One reason behind this could be that these people perceive the Himalayan mountains as tropical, devoid of any snow or chill, despite its elevation. The other could be that human ignorance is so rife that most of the times, stereotypes trump reasoning, the level of education notwithstanding.

@@Warsorcerer2510 I'm really sorry if my reply came across as rude. I was merely exchanging views without any intention of targetting her. If you read my reply, you'll find the phrase "these people" which indicates that my reply was not directed at her but at people in general. She cared to reply to my original comment which is so nice of her. I have no reason to be rude to her, irrespective of her portrayal of India in her videos. My apologies to @NataliesPassport if she also found my posts rude. I hope you keep enjoying your travels across India and around the globe and get people's love everywhere.
